Macroinvertebrates under stochastic hydrological disturbance in Cerrado streams of Central Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Saito,Victor S.; Mazão,Gustavo R..
In the Cerrado vegetation, where the seasonal is well defined, rainfall has an important role in controlling the flow of streams and consequently on the structure of macroinvertebrates community. Despite the effects of rainfall associated with seasonality are well studied, little is known about the effects of stochastic rains on the community. In the present study we evaluated the structure and faunal composition of four first-order streams in Central Brazil during the dry season in two years, with and without stochastic rains. Community sampling was done by colonization of boards of high density polyethylene (HDPE), removed after one month submerged in streams. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) performed indicated no difference in rarefied richness between the...

Seep communities from two mud volcanoes in the deep eastern Mediterranean Sea: faunal composition, spatial patterns and environmental control ArchiMer
Ritt, Benedicte; Desbruyeres, Daniel; Caprais, Jean-claude; Gauthier, Olivier; Ruffine, Livio; Buscail, Roselyne; Olu-le Roy, Karine; Sarrazin, Jozee.
The Mediterranean Sea constitutes a unique environment to study cold-seep ecosystems due to the presence of different geodynamic settings, from an active margin along the Mediterranean Ridge (MR) to a passive margin in the Nile Deep-Sea Fan (NDSF). We attempted to identify the structure of benthic communities associated with the Napoli and Amsterdam mud volcanoes (MVs) located on the MR and to establish the links between faunal distribution and environmental conditions at different spatial scales. Comparison between the 2 MVs revealed that the faunal distribution seemed to be mainly controlled by the characteristics of the microhabitats. On both geological structures, the variability between the different microhabitats was higher than the variability...

First insights into the structure and environmental setting of cold-seep communities in the Marmara Sea ArchiMer
Ritt, Benedicte; Sarrazin, Jozee; Caprais, Jean-claude; Noel, Philippe; Gauthier, Olivier; Pierre, Catherine; Henry, Pierre; Desbruyeres, Daniel.
A brackish-water cold seep on the North Anatolian Fault (NAF) in the Marmara Sea was investigated with the Nautile submersible during the MarNaut cruise in 2007. This active zone has already been surveyed and revealed evidence of active seeping on the seafloor, such as bubble emissions, patches of reduced sediments, microbial mats and authigenic carbonate crusts. MarNaut was the first opportunity to sample benthic communities in the three most common microhabitats (bioturbated and reduced sediments, carbonate crust) and to examine their relationships with environmental conditions. To do so, faunal communities were sampled and chemical measurements were taken close to the organisms. According to diversity indices, the bioturbated microhabitat exhibited the...

Ecologie de la faune associée aux émissions de fluides froids de Méditerranée orientale profonde ArchiMer
Ritt, Benedicte.
The major objectives of this thesis were to study the structure, functioning and dynamics of different faunal assemblages associated with cold seep ecosystems in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. We focused our study on three main sites: the Marmara Sea, the Mediterranean ridge and the Nile deep sea fan. This thesis aims at determining the environmental signature of Mediterranean sites and the characteristics of the associated fauna at European and global scales. The specific objectives were to (1) determine the composition, diversity, density, biomass of invertebrate assemblages, (2) characterize biogeochemical conditions within different microhabitats in the vicinity of organisms, (3) to define the trophic relationships amongst seep fauna using stable...

Macrobenthic communities on the continental shelf of Cote-d'Ivoire. Seasonal and diel cycles in relation to hydroclimate ArchiMer
Le Loeuff, P; Intes, A.
Benthic communities of the shrimp (Penaeus notialis) grounds off Grand-Bassam, Cote-d'Ivoire, exhibit distinct variations, correlated to annual changes in hydroclimate, characterized by warm and cold (upwelling) seasons. These changes appear to be the result of the well-defined reproduction periods of many short-living benthic species, as clearly shown by the peaks of abundance in the samples, at different times of the year, but quite often at the end of the cold and the beginning of the warm seasons (September-November). Many species show marked diel rhythms, either diurnal (pagurids, brachyurans) or nocturnal (macrurans, brachyurans, molluscs), so that the species composition displays distinct differences between day and night samples (February 1970...

Bionomie benthique du petit Golfe de Tunis OceanDocs
Ayari, R.; Afli, A..
This study is concerning benthic macrofauna of the bay of Tunis. It permitted to list 214 species distributed into 9.13 % molluscs, 16.8 % crustaceans, 63.5 % polychaeta, etc. Statistic analysis of the data defined four communauties and described them with some synthetic parameters. The heterogenous sediments are extended on a large area and present the higher specific richness (149 species). The communauty is dominated by 2 polychaeta, Glycera convoluta and Lumbrineris fragilis. The muddy sediments are limited to a small area in the center and characterized by a high abundance (4685 ind./m²). The leader species are the polychaeta Melinna palmata and the isopod Apseudes talpa. However, the sandy sediments wich are limitted to the harbor area of Rades,...

Diversité taxonomique des bryozoaires ctenostomes et cyclostomes au Large du golfe de Tunis OceanDocs
Ayari-Kliti, R.; Afli, A.; Aissa, P..

Patterns of mollusc distribution in mangroves from the São Marcos Bay, coast of Maranhão State, Brazil Acta Amazonica
RODRIGUES,Carlos A. L.; RIBEIRO,Rannyele P.; SANTOS,Nayara B.; ALMEIDA,Zafira S..
ABSTRACT The diversity and distribution of molluscs from the Amazon Coast of Maranhão State, Brazil, are poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate how molluscs in two mangrove creeks (Buenos Aires and Tronco) at the São Marcos Bay, coast of the Maranhão State, respond to spatial and temporal variations in the environment. Sampling was performed in the intertidal area along three zones established using a straight line transect of 100 m. Abiotic variables of water and sediment were measured at each creek. We found 5,912 specimens belonging to 23 species and 15 families of epifaunal and infaunal molluscs. The patterns of their distribution in the two creeks were different. Salinity, dissolved oxygen, and rainfall were the main variables...

Effects of an atypical drought on the benthic macroinvertebrate community in a tropical reservoir Biota Neotropica
Anacléto,Maria José Pinheiro; Ligeiro,Raphael; Barbosa,José Etham de Lucena; Molozzi,Joseline; Callisto,Marcos.
Abstract Atypical drought events have increasingly occurred in Brazil over the last years due to global climate changes. However, their consequences on aquatic biota in reservoirs are poorly known. We tested the hypothesis that macroinvertebrate communities are negatively affected by atypical drought events, given the sensitivity of many taxa to environmental changes. We predicted that: (a) there would be changes in limnological and sediment parameters between a regular year and an atypical year, (b) abundance and richness of the genera of Chironomidae and of exotic species would be higher due to the enhanced ability of these organisms to adapt to changes in the physical environment, and (c) community structure metrics (i. richness; ii. % richness; iii....
