At the Hessian state domain Frankenhausen, an organic farm with comparatively high yield potential, the integration of nature conservation measures is tested. Economic investigations aim to identify costs and changes of performance due to the adaptation of production processes to nature conservation targets. The main focus is on temporary measures that, like field-flower strips, potentially promote biodiversity on arable land. Initial calculations show the costs that must be taken into account for wildflower strips with autochthonous species on arable land. The analysis particularly considers the complex intra-farm integration of the conservation measures as a special characteristic of organic agriculture systems. |

There has recently been an increase in interest in the “public goods” that could be provided by a farm alongside its primary function of agricultural production. This paper reviews recent reports on the topic of public goods and, in particular, the public goods provided by agriculture and then goes on to discuss the development of a tool which can be used to assess the provision of public goods on a farm across a range of areas: soil management, biodiversity, landscape and heritage, water management, manure management and nutrients, energy and carbon, food security, agricultural systems diversity, social capital, farm business resilience, and animal health and welfare. |

The work aims to investigate the effects of different soil management strategies on carbon sequestration and total nitrogen in areas of vineyards suffering from loss of soil functionality. Treatments, selected for inter-row management, to re-install soil functionality were based on compost or other organic amendments (COMP), green manure (GM), and dry mulching (DM) strategies using winter legumes and cereals. Cover crops were seeded in fall and mown in late spring, leaved in the ground for mulching in DM or incorporated into the uppermost soil layers in GM. Such approaches were investigated in six vineyards in Italy, six in France, and two vineyards in Slovenia and Turkey. The results showed that COMP significantly increased total organic carbon (TOC)... |

Several studies have shown that changing from conventional to organic farming is an alternative to reduce negative impacts on the environment, for example nitrogen losses, reduced biodiversity and input of fossil energy per unit land and per unit product. In organic agriculture, as well, there is currently a trend towards specialized farming systems. To compensate for the lack of data on energy efficiency measured at farm scale, a comparison between three differently managed organic all-arable crop rotations and a typical rotation of typical regional N-intensive conventional farm was carried out over a two-year period at a highly productive site in northern Germany. Comparing the all-arable crop rotations, the organic systems had a 62 % lower output... |

Energy production and energy use in organic agriculture (OA) need to be addressed in order to reduce the reliance on non-renewable fossil fuels and minimize greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Thus, there is an obligation to find consensus between the apparent opposing aims of renewable (bio) energy production and soil fertility in OA. This project aims at designing and evaluate a combined concept for biomass and bio-energy production in OA, while considering soil fertility. |

Risks and benefits of transgenic crop plants should be evaluated not only by assessing pollen flow, but also by considering soil persistence of transgenic products, such as Bt toxins, which can accumulate in the soil and remain active for a long time. Moreover, transgenic plants are often ploughed under as crop residues, representing a potential hazard for non-target arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, a group of beneficial plant symbionts fundamental for soil fertility. In this study we monitored the effects of transgenic corn plants (Bt 11 and Bt 176) and their residues on AM fungal growth and root colonization ability. Both transgenic plants decreased mycorrhizal colonization and Bt 11 plant residues negatively affected mycorrhizal establishment by... |

Increasing demands for documentation of farm activities as well as environment and quality assurance call for environment adapted management systems, also in organic farming. The model software REPRO is a tool for farm management and consultation. It is distinguished by a systemic depiction of farming systems and can be used in agricultural practice. The access to farm related data and site information is the basis for statements about matter cycles (C, N, P, K), humus budget, energy efficiency, erosion, soil structure and harmful soil compaction. Its application in rather differently structured farms under organic management discloses distinctly the relationships between the design of farming systems and their environmental effects. The possibility of... |
