Cable length optimization for trawl fuel consumption reduction ArchiMer
Khaled, Ramez; Priour, Daniel; Billard, Jean-yves.
A numerical method for optimization of the cable lengths in trawls with respect to the ratio between the estimated trawl drag and the predicted catch efficiency is developed and applied. The trawl cables of interest are warps, bridles, headline and footrope. The optimization algorithm applies an ordered sequential process changing one cable length at the time. It is assumed in the predictions that the catch efficiency of the trawl is proportional with the trawl mouth area. In a case study optimizing a bottom trawl used on a research vessel by applying the new method it is predicted that it would be possible to reduce the ratio between trawl drag and catch efficiency by up to 46% by optimizing the cable lengths. Thus this would enable a considerable...

Survival of discarded Nephrops norvegicus after trawling in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Mehault, Sonia; Morandeau, Fabien; Kopp, Dorothee.
The new Common Fisheries Policy may exempt some species from the landing obligation if a high survival rate can be demonstrated among discards. This study focuses on the survival capacity of Nephrops norvegicus discarded from trawlers of the Bay of Biscay (France). Three sea trials were conducted on board 3 commercial trawlers and 15 fishing operations were sampled. The vitality of Nephrops was classed into three categories (healthy, moribund or dead) before release at sea and samples of healthy and moribund individuals were kept in captivity on Nephrops grounds for three days. A Generalised Linear Model was used to examine the variability in the proportion of healthy Nephrops discarded, which was significantly influenced by tow duration, duration of air...

International Program of Standardised Trawl Surveys ArchiMer
Mahe, Jean-claude.
The IPROSTS project had two main objective : - Completionn of research vessel surveys in the autumn of 1999 and 2000 in ICES areas VI, VII and VIII in order to provide abundance indices at age for the major commercial species exploited in these areas, - Standardisation of the methodology used in bottom trawl surveys. For completion of the first objective, the French Research institute IFREMER conducted surveys in the Celtic Sea and the Bay of Biscay on board the Research Vessel, Thalassa. The Marine Institute of Dublin conducted surveys in the Irish Sea and Celtic Sea on board the Research Vessel Celtic Voyager and in the Western area of Ireland on board two chartered commercial fishing vessels (Marliona and Shauna Ann). The Marine Laboratory of Aberdeen...

Using underwater video to assess megabenthic community vulnerability to trawling in the Grande Vasière (Bay of Biscay) ArchiMer
Merillet, Laurene; Mouchet, Maud; Robert, Marianne; Salaun, Michele; Schuck, Lucie; Vaz, Sandrine; Kopp, Dorothee.
Trawling activities are considered to be one of the main sources of disturbance to the seabed worldwide. We aimed to disentangle the dominance of environmental variations and trawling intensity in order to explain the distribution of diversity patterns over 152 sampling sites in the French trawl fishing-ground, the Grande Vasière. Using a towed underwater video device, we identified 39 taxa to the finest taxonomic level possible, which were clustered according to their vulnerability to trawling disturbance based on functional traits. Using generalized linear models, we investigated whether the density distribution of each vulnerability group was sensitive to trawling intensity and habitat characteristics. Our analyses revealed a structuring effect of depth...

Survival of European plaice discarded from coastal otter trawl fisheries in the English Channel ArchiMer
Morfin, Marie; Kopp, Dorothee; Benoit, Hugues P.; Mehault, Sonia; Randall, Peter; Foster, Robert; Catchpole, Thomas.
Species that have a high likelihood of surviving the discarding process have become great concern since the European Union reformed the Common Fisheries Policy and enacted a landing obligation prohibiting the discarding any individuals of species under quota. Among species presenting an elevated survival potential, plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) is one of the most discarded in the coastal otter trawl fishery in the English Channel. The objective of this study is to provide the most reliable estimates of plaice survival after release in commercial conditions, and to identify the factors that influence survival rates. A captivity experiment was conducted in January–February in the English fishery to assess the survival of discarded plaice as a function of a...

Amélioration de la sélectivité des chalutiers Pêcherie multispécifique – Manche - Mer du Nord (selecmer) ArchiMer
Leonardi, Sophie; Rubin, Alex; Meillat, Marc; Coppin, Franck; Delpech, Jean-paul; Morandeau, Fabien; Larnaud, Pascal.

Acoustic data collected during and between bottom trawl stations: consistency and common trends ArchiMer
Bez, Nicolas; Reid, David; Neville, Suzanna; Verin, Yves; Hjellvik, Vidar; Gerritsen, Hans D..
Acoustic data are often collected during bottom trawl surveys. Their use can potentially improve the precision and accuracy of fish abundance estimates if acoustic data collected between trawl stations are consistent with those collected during trawling operations. This question is addressed here through the analysis of 20 bottom trawl surveys (three survey areas and five different survey series) with coincident acoustic measurements during and between trawl stations. Firstly, on-station and underway acoustic data were compared using statistics computed globally over each survey (average vertical profiles, global indices of collocations, and spatial structures) for various combinations of depth layers. Secondly, we focussed on underway acoustic data...

Essai et mise au point d'un chalut de fond à grande ouverture verticale (gov) OceanDocs
Bdioui, M.; M’rabet, R.; Ben Naceur, L..
The main object of this study is to develop a big vertical opening bottom trawl (GOV) adapted to the Tunisian fisheries. Two models of trawls were tested. One for a trawler with 600 horse power engine and another model for a trawler with 900 horse power engine. The obtained results in this study show that the two models of trawls tested are efficient, especially in the areas where we found benthic and pelagic species together. Further more, the yield of these trawls is higher than that of the shrimp’s trawl, the most gear used in Tunisian water.
