Paschoal,Solange V.; Amato,Suzana B..
The influence of the parasitism by the digenetic trematode Eurytrema coelomaticum (Giard & Billet, 1892) over the calcium mobilization and the reproductive function of its first intermediate host, the snail Bradybaena similaris (Férussac, 1821) was experimentally studied in infected and uninfected snails maintained in laboratory under controlled conditions of nutrition, humidity and temperature. The calcium of the shells of infected and uninfected snails was quantified by using a technique of volumetric complexation. The amount of calcium present in the tissue was evaluated by using the histochemistry techniques of Dahl and von Kossa. The alteration in the reproductive function was evaluated through the egg production, and by histological follow up...

Estudo do crescimento e da reprodução de Bradybaena similaris (Férussac) (Mollusca, Xanthonychidae) em laboratório Zoologia
Almeida,Marcelo Nocelle de; Bessa,Elisabeth Cristina de Almeida.
Biological aspects of Bradybaena similaris (Férussac, 1821) were studied, such as: onset of sexual maturity, occurrence of self-fertilization, oviposition, incubation period, eclosion rate and shell length measurement at different stages of development. It was noted that in isolated B. similaris the minimum and maximum time for reaching sexual maturity were 109 and 180 days, respectively. When kept in groups, the minimum time was 78 days. The occurrence of self-fertilization was observed in 18.4% of specimens. The total number of eggs per oviposition varied from one to 38 (average: 3,5 ± 7,15), the total number of eggs per mollusc varied from one to 39 (average: 7,0 ± 10,21) and the total number of oviposition per mollusc varied form one to six (averege:...

The total protein and ammonia contents in the hemolymph of Bradybaena similaris (Fèrussac, 1821) during the starvation were determined from August, 1996 to March, 1998. The results revealed a significant variation in the total protein content throughout the period of starvation analized, there being a negative relation between the total protein content and the time of starvation. But the same result was not observed in the ammonia content. After 30 days of starvation there was a reduction of 2,8% of the content of ammonia in the hemolymph. A negative relation between the ammonia content and the time of starvation was observed, but this relation was not significative. It is probable that the degradation of the proteins don't lead to an increase of the...

Desenvolvimento de Eurytrema coelomaticum (Giard & Billet) (Digenea, Dicrocoeliidae) em Bradybaena similaris (Férussac) (Gastropoda, Xanthonychidae) Zoologia
Brandolini,Solange Viana Paschoal Blanco; Amato,Suzana Bencke.
To follow the larval developmenl of Eurytrema coelomaticum (Giard & Billet, 1892) in Bradybaena similaris (Férussac, 1821) snails were separated in three classes using the shell diameter: Class A (14.5-10.2 mm), Class B (10.1-6.9 mm) and Class C (6.8-2.6 mm). Only snails belonging to classes A and B acquired the infection. Specimens of E. coelomaticum removed from the pancreatic ducts were exposed to three physiological solutions: Earle, Locke and saline 0.85%, to obtain eggs for the experimental infections, The Locke solution induced the best egg release. The route of migration the intramolluscan development of E. coelomaticum was studied with the aid of histology. The minimal period of intramolluscan developmenl, ending at the expelling of...

Moluscos em área de horticultura no município de Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil Zoologia
Bruschi-Figueiró,Gisela; Veitenheimer-Mendes,Inga L..
Horticultural production areas are favorable to development and maintenance of land mollusks populations. To know the mollusk fauna diversity in that kind of production area a research project was conduced in a rural-urban district of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The production property studied is located in the Southern zone of the city and has 17 ha of cultivated area. The sampling period was from August/2000 to August/2001, with monthly quantitative collects on the different culture production beds previously selected. Six taxa were registered: Deroceras leave (Müller, 1774) (1.389 specimens = 82,82%), Bradybaena similaris (Férussac, 1821) (195 specimens = 11,7%), Succinea meridionalis d'Orbigny, 1846 (82 specimens = 4,9%), Lamellaxis...

An improvement of calcium determination technique in the shell of molluscs BABT
Soído,Cristiane; Vasconcellos,Maurício Carvalho; Diniz,Antônia Gonçalves; Pinheiro,Jairo.
The complexometric method is usually applied to quantitative calcium determination in different materials; however the application of this method to calcium determination in molluscs shells infers significant interferences to the results. The snail Bradybaena similaris, a terrestrial gastropod, was used as experimental model to the improvement of this method. The shells were calcinated and dissolved in nitric acid, the hydrogen peroxide was also used to clarify the medium after the acid addition. The calcination procedure and the use of nitric acid reduced the significantly the interferences, allowing a major degree of destruction of the organic substances of the shell. The improvement of the calcium determination technique usually employed showed calcium...

The influence of starvation and Eurytrema coelomaticum infection on the nitrogenous products of degradation in the hemolymph of Bradybaena similaris BABT
Souza,Rosana M. de; Gomes,Edna M.; Chagas,Generoso M.; Pinheiro,Jairo.
The urea and uric acid contents in the hemolymph of Bradybaena similaris were analyzed under starvation and Eurytrema coelomaticum infection during 30 days. The urea and uric acid contents in the uninfected and fed snails were 15.090 mg/dl and 9.399 mg/dl, respectively, being the urea/uric acid ratio 1.6. The urea content in starved snails increased to a maximum of 363.237 mg/dl at 15 days, and the uric acid varied to a maximum of 11.470 mg/dl. The urea content in infected snails was reduced to a minimum of 2.123 mg/dl at 30 days of infection and the uric acid increased significatively at 25 days post exposure, being 13.820 mg/dl. A significative relation was not observed between the time of starvation and time of E. coelomaticum infection and the uric...
