Occurrence of Atta cephalotes (L.) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in Alagoas, Northeastern Brazil Neotropical Entomology

Atta cephalotes (L.) presents a wide distribution in the Neotropical region. In Brazil, this species is disjunctly distributed in the Amazon region and in the states of Maranhão, Pernambuco and southern Bahia, all of which belong to Northeast Region. Here we report on a survey of Atta colonies in 42 remnants of the Atlantic rainforest in Alagoas and Pernambuco. Our results include new records of A. cephalotes in the state of Alagoas and thereby extend the known distribution area of its southern populations in Northeast Brazil. In addition, the species was strongly associated with well-conserved forest remnants, indicating that it is highly sensitive to disturbance. The forest succession after abandonment of slash-and-burn agriculture over calcareous soil in Brazilian Atlantic Forest was assessed. This is one of the world's most threatened Biome, with only 8% remaining. The study area is located over calcareous soil inside the Alto Ribeira Touristic State Park (PETAR), southeast Brazil. The phytossociological survey showed a successional pattern dominated by species of Leguminosae, especially Piptadenia gonoacantha (Mart.) J.F. Macbr. This species occurs in calcareous soils as a substitute of Tibouchina pulchra (Cham.) Cogn. ABSTRACT Forest cover in areas degraded by mining is an alternative way of mitigating CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere by fixing C in tree biomass. This study evaluated the growth and C stocks of forest cover in an area of bauxite mining with four sources of fertilizer. Height (Ht), diameter at ground level (DGL), and diameter at breast height (DBH) were determined in Anadenanthera peregrina (Ap), clonal Eucalyptus (Euc), and a mixed plantation of 16 native forest species (Nat) at 6, 18, 36, and 56 months of age. ABSTRACT The Brazilian Atlantic Forest is a global biodiversity hotspot, but most of what remains are small fragments. Small fragments are often harsh environments for forest plant recruitment due to edge effects and the loss of frugivorous animals that provide seed dispersal. We recorded the one-year reproductive phenology of the keystone palm Syagrus romanzoffiana in small (<2.5ha) Atlantic Forest fragments in southeastern Brazil. We tested the Janzen-Connell hypothesis with seed-removal experiments and followed the five-year survival of recruits in relation to the distance from parental plants. Diurnal versus nocturnal pollination success in Billbergia horrida Regel (Bromeliaceae) and the first record of chiropterophily for the genus Anais da ABC (AABC)

Billbergia horrida is endemic of the Atlantic Forest fragments in southeastern Brazil and characterized by flowers with typical traits for pollination by nocturnal animals. Although the majority of Billbergia species rely on diurnal pollination by hummingbirds, B. horrida is also visited by bats and this study evidences for the first time the occurrence of chiropterophily within the genus. The role of different groups of pollinators on the reproductive success of B. horrida was evaluated, as well as the correlation of nectar features in sustaining these animals during different periods of the day. The use of singleplex and nested PCR to detect Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis in free-living frogs BJM

Many microorganisms are able to cause diseases in amphibians, and in the past few years one of the most reported has been Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis. This fungus was first reported in Brazil in 2005; following this, other reports were made in specimens deposited in museum collections, captive and free-living frogs. The aim of this study was to compare singleplex and nested-PCR techniques to detect B. dendrobatidis in free-living and apparently healthy adult frogs from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest.
