INFLUENCE OF THE PHENOLOGICAL PHASE OF TWO PEPPER CULTIVARS ON THE BEHAVIOUR OF Polyphagotarsonemus latus (BANKS) 100
Rodríguez,H; Montoya,A; Miranda,Ileana; Rodríguez,Yaritza; Ramos,Mayra.
The severity of the damages caused by Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Banks) in the protected production of pepper have been related to the phenological phases of the crop. The influence of the phenological phases on the damages produced by P. latus on two Cuban pepper cultivars is evaluated in the present work. Groups of eight pots were formed with plants of each of the cultivars. The treatments consisted in the infestation of the apical zone of the plants with ten females of the broad mite at 5, 7, 10 and 14 weeks of seed germination, time periods corresponding to the different phenological phases. A group of eight plants of both cultivars were left uninfested as controls. After infestation, one leaf was collected from the apical zone of each plant every...

Biological control of Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Banks) by the predatory mite Amblyseius largoensis (Muma) on sheltered pepper production in Cuba 100
Rodríguez,Héctor; Montoya,Adrián; Miranda,Ileana; Rodríguez,Yaritza; Depestre,Tomás L.; Ramos,Mayra; Badii-Zabeh,Mohammad H..
The effectiveness of Amblyseius largoensis (Muma) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) for regulating Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Banks) (Acari: Tarsonemidae) populations in pepper crops was evaluated in a greenhouse, protected microplots and a tunnel system. A. largoensis were released at the densities of 2, 4 and 8 predators per plant in the greenhouse. In the microplot and tunnel systems, only four predators per plant were released. Broad mite population densities were evaluated weekly by sampling young leaves from the top of the plants. All three released rates of A. largoensis significantly (p < 0.05) controlled broad mite populations in the greenhouse; however, the control effect was delayed when only two predatory mites were released. On the other hand,...

Population parameters and damage of Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Acari: Tarsonemidae) in Valencia orange (Citrus sinensis [L.] Osbeck) crop 109
Rodríguez,Isaura Viviana; Mesa-Cobo,Nora Cristina; Valencia,Milton Orlando; Ossa,Julián.
Abstract Polyphagotarsonemus latus is one a major pest of Valencia orange in Colombia. To study its biology, it was established an experiment on young leaves of the Valencia orange at 25 ± 5°C, 70 ± 5% RH, and 12:12 L:D photoperiod. To characterize the nature of damage caused by this mite on leaves and young fruits, a trial in screenhouse conditions using young leaf and small fruits (0.1 - 0.3 cm in diameter) and fruits between 1.0-3.0 cm in diameter, which were infested with 5, 15 and 30 adult females of P. latus, was established. The total duration of life cycle was 3.2 days; the female had an oviposition period of 7.4 days and longevity 9.6 days. Life table parameters were as follows: net reproductive rate (R o ) = 93.3, intrinsic rate of natural...
