Since 2005, the implementation of a traceability system is mandatory to all European food chain operators. The balance of costs to build and maintain the traceability system and benefits of traceability depends on the firm's traceability objectives and its resources, as reflected in characteristics, such as adopted quality management systems (QMS) or firm size. Mora and Menozzi (2005) mention that the cost of traceability is lower when firms already have a QMS in place. Moreover, US producers exporting to multiple destinations, in particular EU and Japan, need to comply with more stringent traceability regulations (De Souza Monteiro and Caswell 2004). RESUMEN: Este artículo ofrece los resultados de un estudio intra-sectorial destinado a identificar la existencia o no de vínculos entre la estrategia empresarial, el estilo de gestión, la estructura organizativa y la actuación en el sector hortofrutícola español utilizando el análisis de grupos estratégicos como instrumento metodológico. Los grupos estratégicos se formaron a partir de dimensiones claves de la orientación estratégica de las empresas. Los resultados obtenidos muestran que los niveles de rentabilidad no difieren de forma sistemática entre los grupos estratégicos obtenidos. A business performance index model that measures wealth change in Australian farm businesses AgEcon

This paper presents an evaluation of a farm-business assessment model that uses financial performance measures and tracks ‘wealth change’ to evaluate performance trends over time, and ranks the relative business performance of commercial participants. Its core component involves the use of comparative analysis, which is structured as an introductory rapid-assessment model, together with a ranking system that has been designed to differentiate the relative performance levels of farm businesses. The system has been labelled as the Business Performance Index (BPI) model to reflect its performance-ranking role that explores the relationships, if any, between farmer attitudes and business performance.
