Dinamiche del commercio internazionale dell'olio di oliva italiano: un'analisi prospettica 31
Finco, Adele; Padella, Monica; Di Pronio, Guido; Pollonara, Mirco.
The paper analyses the dynamics of the Italian olive oil trade and gives a preliminary explanation of the opportunity in the international market. The paper starts showing the description of olive oil chain and production and underlining the main factors affecting the import export system. The aim of this work is to explain the magnitude of the trade flows for olive oil from Italy to its main importing countries. This objective has been reached by establishing an appropriate econometric model derived from an extended form of the “Gravity Model”. This model has been broadly applied to the analysis of international trade because it provides robust estimates. The results obtained and the model itself are useful in forecasting potential trends in the...

Short-Run and Long-Run Oil Price Sensitivity of Equity Returns: The South Asian Markets 31
Nandha, Mohan; Faff, Robert.
This paper examines the short-run and the long-run oil price sensitivity of Indian, Pakistani and Sri Lankan equity returns using industry share price indices that are common between at least two countries. A generalised method of moments based approach is applied to a market model augmented by an oil price factor. Results are estimated using both domestic and US dollar oil prices. Several industries (e.g. chemicals, engineering and machinery, food processors and transport) are found to be statistically significantly sensitive to the oil price factor in the long run, whereas no such sensitivity is detected in the short run. Our results indicate that longer period return generating intervals might offer a better setting in which to explore the oil price...

The effects of food habits and socioeconomic status on overweight. Differences between the native Dutch and immigrants in the Netherlands 31
Cornelisse-Vermaat, Judith R.; Maassen van den Brink, Henriette.
Overweight is a worldwide growing epidemic. The Netherlands is among the countries with the highest prevalence for overweight, together with the USA, UK, and Germany. This paper investigates differences in overweight between native Dutch and three immigrant groups in the Netherlands, and the effects of food habits and socioeconomic status on overweight. The results show that all immigrant groups have a higher prevalence for overweight than the Dutch, apart from Moroccans. Males are overweight more frequently than females. Takeaway food, eating out, and fresh vegetables decrease BMI, while convenience food, ready-to-eat meals, and delivery food (in some cases) increase BMI. In all groups, BMI increases with age. For Surinamese/Antilleans and Turks BMI...

MILKING THE MOST FROM YOUR PROMOTIONAL DOLLARS: AN ANALYSIS OF AGRIBUSINESS FIRMS SERVING U.S.AGRICULTURAL PRODUCERS 31
Roucan-Kane, Maud; Peake, Whitney O..
Although the marketing mix has been covered in great detail in many veins of literature, very little information exists regarding the mix of marketing tools within the agriculture industry serving U.S. agricultural producers. Using a survey conducted by AgriMarketing magazine in June 2006, a two-fold analysis is undertaken. This study attempts to determine the differences in the use of marketing tools by industry and simple regression analysis is conducted to determine promotional factors that produce a significant impact on sales. Both mass media and other promotional tools were found to be the most consistently significant factor impacting sales of firms in the study.

An Econometric Model of CGE Simulations 31
Hess, Sebastian.
CGE models are widely used tools for economic assessments of trade policy changes. However, overall confidence in their results tends to be low. We employ the methodological framework of meta-analysis in order to approach a quantitative comparison of CGE-based simulation results. Therefore, we compile a dataset of twelve recent Doha simulations and fit a linear regression model that explains the variance between simulation results on the regional level as a function of various modeling characteristics. The estimates are broadly in range with documented qualitative knowledge about modeling assumptions. The size of the sample limits general conclusions; however, an ongoing research project will extend the approach to a larger sample.

Environmental Kuznets Curves for Carbon Emissions: A Critical Survey 31
Aslanidis, Nektarios.
The empirical finding of an inverse U-shaped relationship between per capita income and pollution, the so-called Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC), suggests that as countries experience economic growth, environmental deterioration decelerates and thus becomes less of an issue. Focusing on the prime example of carbon emissions, the present article provides a critical review of the new econometric techniques that have questioned the baseline polynomial specification in the EKC literature. We discuss issues related to the functional form, heterogeneity, “spurious” regressions and spatial dependence to address whether and to what extent the EKC can be observed. Despite these new approaches, there is still no clear-cut evidence supporting the existence of the...
