No clastogenic activity of Caesalpinia ferrea Mart. (Leguminosae) extract on bone marrow cells of Wistar rats Genet. Mol. Biol.
Souza,Andréa Bêcco de; Souza,Lilian Mara Silva; Carvalho,José Carlos Tavares; Maistro,Edson Luis.
Extracts of the fruits of Caesalpinia ferrea Mart. (Leguminosae) are widely consumed in folkloric medicine in Brazil and several other countries without any genetic toxicity evaluation. In this study we investigated, the clastogenic and cytotoxic potential of the crude aqueous extract of the fruits of C. ferrea in Wistar rat bone marrow cells using the micronucleus and chromosomal aberration test systems. The animals were treated by gavage with 3 concentrations of the extract, 500, 1000 and 1500 mg/kg, and cyclophosphamide 30 mg/kg. Bone marrow cells were collected 24 h after the treatment. There was no statistically significant difference in the mean of micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes (MNPCE), mean number of chromosomal aberrations or mitotic...

Quality of Caesalpinia ferrea seedlings produced on different substrates and light conditions PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Santos, Laércio Wanderley dos; Coelho, Maria de Fatima Barbosa; Azevedo, Rodrigo Aleixo Brito de.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different substrates and luminosity in the early growth of Caesalpinia ferrea Mart. ex Tul. seedlings. It was used completely randomized design in factorial 5 x 2 (five substrates and two environments) with four replications of 10 plants in each plot. The substrates were 1- arisco, 2- arisco + cattle manure 2:1, 3- arisco + cattle manure 3:1, 4- sand + cattle manure 2:1 and 5- sand + cattle manure 3:1. Environments were in full sun and 50% light. The evaluated characteristics in September 2009, were stem diameter, height, roots dry mass, shoots dry mass, leaf area and index quality of Dickson. There was no significant difference for stem diameter. The substrates containing manure promoted the development...

Quebra da dormência de sementes de quatro leguminosas arbóreas Acta Botanica
Nascimento,Maria do P. Socorro C. Bona do; Oliveira,Maria Edileide Alencar.

Assessment of sperm production and reproductive organs of Wistar rats to long-term exposure of Caesalpinia ferrea Anais da ABC (AABC)
Lucinda,Leda M.F.; Rocha,Camila B.; Reboredo,Maycon M.; Faria,Vinícius C.; Sá,Rita C.S..
Caesalpinia ferrea Mart (Leguminosae) is a medicinal plant used to treat diabetes, among other therapeutic properties, but which is also reported to have hepatotoxic effects. Although it contains substances such as flavonoids and coumarin, which are known to have antifertility activity, no studies have apparently been conducted to evaluate the potential adverse side effects of this plant on the function of the reproductive system after a chronic treatment. Therefore, this investigation was carried out to evaluate the effect and safety of the long-term exposure to C. ferrea on male Wistar rats' vital organs, reproductive system and sperm production. Adult and immature male rats were treated with an aqueous extract of C. ferrea at a dose level of 300 mg/kg...
