A cat was brought to us for the treatment of depressionanorexia, and hypovolemia. We performed an adrenocortkotropic hormone( ACTH) stimulation examination, radiography, ultrasonography, and computed tomography. On the basis of clinical symptoms,a low cortisol level, microcardia.small pulmonary vessels, and small adrenal glands. the condition was diagnosed as hypoadrenocorticism. Imaging findings were useful for obtaining additional infonnation on hypoadrenocorticism. Although hypoadrenocorticism in cats extremely rare, we would recommend its consideration as a differential diagnosis for cats with nonspecific clinical symptoms and hypovolemia. 元気消失,食欲不振を主訴とし,循環血液量低下を呈した猫にACTH (adrenocorticotropic...

Tagawa, Michihito; Kurashima, Chihiro; Shimbo, Genya; Omura, Hiroshi; Koyama, Kenji; Horiuchi, Noriyuki; Kobayashi, Yoshiyasu; Kawamoto, Keiko; Miyahara, Kazuro.
A three-year-old spayed domestic short-haired cat presented for evaluation of weight loss, cardiomegaly and pleural effusion. Echocardiographic examination demonstrated a thickened pericardium with mild pericardial effusion and a large volume of pleural effusion characterized by exudate. Although the cat was treated with antibiotics, the clinical symptoms did not improve. The cat developed dyspnea and died on day 7. Necropsy revealed a large amount of modified transudates ascites, pleural effusion and markedly dilated pericardium. Histopathological examination revealed severe exudation of fibrin and granulation tissue in a thick layer of the epicardium. The cat was diagnosed with fibrinous pericarditis secondary to bacterial infection.

Application of basic concepts in ethology in the feline veterinary medicine MV&Z
Genaro, Gelson.
The study of Ethology has grown in the Veterinary Medicine, and nowadays it can be observed a considerable increase in the number of domestic cats in our society. These points highlight the importance of studying this animal from an ethologic point of view. The professional should alert the owner about the behavioural aspects and thoroughly discuss what to expect from a companion animal, minimizing the possibilities of conflicts among them, which can lead to abandonment. The knowledge of the behavioural characteristics, as well as the development of the animal will help for the prevention of future problems.

Conjunctival impression cytology in cats (felis domestica) MV&Z
Brandão, Claudia Valéria Seullner; Minto, Bruno Watanabe; Rocha, Noeme Sousa; Ranzani, José Joaquin Titton.
Conjunctival cytology is an important auxiliary diagnostic method that can be easily used by veterinarians in their practice. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the feasibility of conjunctival cytology by impression on filter paper and to establish the normal characteristics in the domestic cat. The technique was used in thirty cats without topical anesthesia. The Giemsa and Sborr staining were used to study the cytology characteristics. It was found that there is a predominance of epithelial cells in clusters, the cells coming from the intermediate and superficial layers. The collection method proved to be accurate, fast and non-destructive to the conjunctiva, and can be used in the diagnosis and treatment of external eye diseases.

Feline heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) infection: first case report of serological diagnosis in Brazil, confirmed by molecular assay Anais da ABC (AABC)
PEREIRA,BARBARA B.; BASTOS,BETHÂNIA F.; KEIDEL,LUCAS; LELES,DANIELA; BRENER,BEATRIZ.
Abstract The clinical importance of heartworm infection in cats has indeed increased in recent years. Dirofilaria immitis infection has been reported worldwide in cats and continues to be regularly diagnosed in endemic areas. The diagnosis can be overlooked easily, especially in Brazil, where there is not a specific feline immunodiagnostic test, forcing the veterinarians to use a test made for the canine host. In 2015, a 10-year-old female neutered cat was diagnosed with D. immitis using an antigen serological test, based on imunocromatography and designed for dogs. The modified Knott test was negative. As the disease progressed, the cat showed clinical signals of respiratory distress, such as dyspnoea and polypnea in addition to prostration and...

Precisão da técnica de absorciometria de raios-x de dupla energia na determinação da composição corporal em gatos Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Borges,N.C.; Vasconcellos,R.S.; Canola,J.C.; Paula,F.J.A.; Carciofi,A.C.; Pereira,G.T..
A short-term precision error of the individual subject and the DEXA technique, such as the effect of the repositioning of the cat on the examination table, were established. Four neutered adult cats (BW=4342g) and three females (BW=3459g) were submitted to five repeated scans with and without repositioning between them. Precision was estimated from the mean of the five measurements and expressed by the individual coefficient of variation (CV). The precision error of the technique was estimated by the variance of scan pool (n=35) and expressed in CV for the technique (CVt). The degrees of freedom and confidence intervals were determined to avoid underestimation of precision errors. Bone mineral content (BMC), lean mass (LM), and fat mass (FM) averages were...

Fine needle aspiration cytology in feline skeletal muscle as a diagnostic tool for extramedullary plasmacytoma Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Martins,D.B.; Rossato,C.K.; Silva,S.L.; Almeida,S.S.N.; Ribeiro,L.S..
ABSTRACT Extramedullary noncutaneous plasmacytoma (ENP) is a myeloproliferative disorder of plasma cells that rarely affects cats. This paper describes an ENP case revealed by fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of the mass in the skeletal muscle of an 8-month-old, male, mixed breed cat, which had a nodule in the left hind limb. The rapid immunoassay test confirmed the presence of feline leukemia virus (FeLV). The animal necropsy macroscopically showed the nodule came from the semimembranosus muscle. Histopathological examination ratified the cytological findings. Thus, this paper alerts to the existence of plasmacytoma located in the skeletal muscle of feline species. FNAC is a quick and efficient method for diagnosis of ENP.

The use of hydroxyapatite for arthrodesis in dogs and cats: a clinical study Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Dórea Neto,F.A.; Padilha Filho,J.G.; Santos,L.A.; Oriá,A.P.; Canola,J.C.; Stefanes,S.A.; Regonato,E..
Twenty-five arthrodeses were performed in four cats and 17 dogs using synthetic hydroxyapatite as fresh autogenous graft cancellous bone substitute. Arthrodesis was performed in the carpal joint in eight cases, in the tarsal joint in 10, in the elbow joint in six, and in the knee joint in one case. The mean radiographic follow-up time was 30 days in one animal, 45 days in another animal and 60 days in the 19 remaining cases. Bone union was observed in 24 arthrodeses. Non-union of one elbow arthrodesis was due to failure of stabilization. Restoration of limb functionality was classified as good to excellent in 22 cases. Hydroxyapatite was able to promote bone growth and is suitable for using in routine surgical procedures for small animals.
