In mammals, surface respiratory macrophages (SM) are known to play a foremost role in protecting the respiratory system by providing first line of defense through engulfing pathogens and particulate matter respired with air. It has been reported that the pulmonary cellular defense system of domestic birds is inadequate. In particular, low number of SM and even lack of the cells in a healthy avian respiratory system have been associated with susceptibility of domestic birds to respiratory diseases. In an endeavor to resolve the existing controversy, the quantitative and qualitative attributes of the surface respiratory macrophages of the domestic duck and of the domestic rabbit were compared under similar experimental conditions. Quantitatively, the rabbit... |

The initial effects of the infection by AgMNPV in the total and differential counts of the hemocytes in Anticarsia gemmatalis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) larvae were studied. The total number of the hemocytes did not decrease in infected larvae, as it occurred in non infected larvae. In infected larvae, the hemocyte types showed the following frequencies: plasmatocytes - 47.8%, esferulocytes - 25.9%, granulocytes - 15.8%, oenocytoids - 7.2%, prohemocytes - 2.8%, vermicytes - 0,5%. Only the percentage of the granulocytes was different among infected and non infected larvae, indicating that these cells responded quickly to the initial viral infection. These results showed the effective role of the hemocytes in the response of the A. gemmatalis to the infection... |

In order to investigate the defense response in castor bean (Ricinus communis) against predators, we analyzed the effect of mechanical wounding upon the phospholipase A2 (PLA2) activity of leaf extracts. Time course experiments revealed that the highest levels of increased PLA2 activity (ca. two fold) occurred 15 min and 60 min after injury. The induced activities demonstrated high sensitivity towards aristolochic acid (10 mM), a PLA2 inhibitor. Based on SDS-PAGE analysis, the PLA2 activity induced 15 min after wounding migrated with a molecular mass of 40 kDa and was denoted RcPLA2 I. The protein activity induced 60 min after wounding, RcPLA2 II, migrated with a molecular weight of 14 kDa. Furthermore its N-terminal sequence shared homology with PLA2 from... |
