The Effect of Household Wealth on Input Market Participation in Southern Africa AgEcon
Langyintuo, Augustine S.; Mungoma, Catherine.
Input technological change, fundamental to rural transformation, sometimes bypasses some rural populations because farmers are often reluctant to use new inputs due to production and price risks that could render their use unprofitable. The level of wealth of the household significantly relates to the household's ability to cope with such risks. Given the highly disproportionate distribution of wealth among rural households, this paper demonstrated that first stratifying households into meaningful wealth categories and estimating non-separable household improved variety adoption and seed demand models for each wealth category provides an opportunity to develop credible policy relevant recommendations on interventions that increase impact. This approach...

Tobit regression to estimate impact of EU market intervention in dairy sector AgEcon
Wocken, Meike; Kneib, Thomas.
This study examines the effect of European intervention politics in the European butter market in the context of market liberalization using the example of Germany. A heteroscedastic Tobit model is estimated using German butter market data from 1973-2010. There is evidence that price support has reduced price instability in the butter market. Simulation indicates that enhancing intervention price causes an increase in the expected butter price in the long-run, even though if market price is higher than intervention level. We find changing effects of stockpiling. If difference between market and intervention price is small and stock quantity is high, it significantly contributes to reducing price volatility. On the contrary if price difference is large and...

An Econometric Analysis of Price Dynamics in the Presence of a Price Floor: The Case of American Cheese AgEcon
Chavas, Jean-Paul; Kim, Kwansoo.
In this paper, we present an econometric analysis for the effects of a price floor on price dynamics and price volatility. A price floor (implemented as a part of government pricing policy) provides a censoring mechanism for price determination. We specify and estimate a dynamic Tobit model under time-varying volatility. The model is applied to analyze the effects of a price support program on price dynamics and price volatility in the U.S. American cheese market. The econometric analysis provides useful insights on price dynamics in the presence of a government-determined price floor.

PRICE DETERMINANTS OF SHOW QUALITY QUARTER HORSES AgEcon
Taylor, Mykel R.; Dhuyvetter, Kevin C.; Kastens, Terry L.; Douthit, Megan; Marsh, Thomas L..
This study estimates the price determinants of show quality Quarter Horses sold at auction. Several characteristics including genetic and physical traits, the quality of pedigree, and the sale order affect price. Sale price is positively affected by a strong performance record of the horse as well as the performance record of the horse's offspring. A common practice at horse auctions is for the seller to reject the final bid offered and not sell the horse. The market prices predicted by the model for these horses indicate that they are not undervalued by the final bids, based on their characteristics.

Assets, Activities and Income Generation in Rural Mexico: Factoring in Social and Public Capital AgEcon
Winters, Paul C.; Davis, Benjamin; Corral, Leonardo.
In recent years, there has been increasing emphasis in the rural development literature on the multiple income-generating activities undertaken by rural households and the importance of assets in determining the capacity to undertake these activities. Controlling for endogeneity choice and applying Lee's generalization of Amemiya's two-step estimator to a simultaneous equation model, household returns to assets from multiple activities are explored for the Mexico ejido sector. To incorporate the multiple variables representing social and public capital into the analysis, factor analysis is used. The results indicate that the asset position of the household has a significant effect on household participation in income generating activities and returns to...

THE EFFECT OF GENERIC DAIRY ADVERTISING ON THE HOUSEHOLD DEMAND FOR MILK AND CHEESE AgEcon
Schmit, Todd M.; Chung, Chanjin; Dong, Diansheng; Kaiser, Harry M.; Gould, Brian W..
Consistent two-step censored estimation is applied to household demand equations for disaggregated milk and cheese products. The long-run advertising elasticity for total milk was positive, largely due to low fat milk; however the elasticity for cheese was not significant, and only shredded cheese had a positive, significant response.
