Prevalence of Obesity in a Sample of Schoolchildren from Municipalized Schools in the IX Region of Chile 2008-2009 International Journal of Morphology
Carrasco,Vanessa; Martínez,Cristián; Silva,Héctor; Collipal,Erika; Campos,Christian; Silva,Tamara.
Obesity is a prevalent disease in Chile. The multitude of cause factors makes it a complex disease and therefore very difficult to treat, since its roots lie in the earliest stages of life. We evaluated pupils from 21 municipalized primary schools, in rural and urban communities from the 10 districts of the IX Region. The sample consisted of 275 subjects in Kindergarten and first year primary school in the year 2008, who were monitored over two years. The results show a trend indicating an increase in the prevalence of obesity in the sample, the difference being statistically significant, p=0.000. These results show that obesity is increasing, and that more action is needed to slow this disease occurring from early childhood.

Social Meaning in Supermarkets as a Direct Route to Improve Parents’ Fruit and Vegetable Purchases AgEcon
Payne, Collin R.; Niculescu, Mihai.
Direct and indirect attempts to increase parents’ fruit and vegetable purchases have had little, if any, success. Most of the disappointing results are reported in the grocery environment. In this context, embedding messages with social meaning may have a significant impact on current campaigns. We use the focus theory of normative conduct as an alternative theoretical framework and suggest that social norms that are salient, easy to interpret, and easy to compare against individuals’ behavior may improve current attempts to increase parents’ fruit and vegetable purchases in retail environments.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Financial Stress, and Childhood Obesity AgEcon
Burgstahler, Rebecca; Gundersen, Craig; Garasky, Steven B..
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is the largest nutritional assistance program addressing food insecurity in the United States. Due to the program’s reach, SNAP has been called upon to address other nutrition-related challenges facing low-income Americans, including childhood obesity. This study considers the effect of SNAP participation on child weight outcomes after controlling for household financial stress, an important determinant of child overweight status that disproportionately affects low-income households. Using data from the Survey of Household Finances and Childhood Obesity and instrumental variable methods, we find that SNAP participation is negatively associated with obesity among eligible children.

The effect of childhood obesity on social welfare AgEcon
Szucs, Robert Sandor; Csapo, Zsolt.
The young generation is the most influenced and vulnerable segment of the market. Food with high level of fat, sugar and/or salt are popularised for this segment. At the same time nearly 7 people die of obesity or from complications of obesity in Hungary each hour - one every 9 minutes. Approximately 119 million Americans, or 64.5 percent, of adult Americans are either overweight or obese. 17.5 million obese young persons live in the European Union. The result is the drastic elevation of the hygienic expenses. The average health care cost of overweight persons is higher by 42% than normal bodyweight ones. Per capita spending on fast foods is unbelievable and rising. The value of average spending was 2.5 € in 2002. Fast food sales continue to boom despite...

Do Low Prices for Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Increase Children's Weight? AgEcon
Wendt, Minh; Todd, Jessica E..
This paper tests whether prices of soda, fruit drinks, and other selected foods influence children’s BMI measures. Child and household data are drawn from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Survey, Kindergarten cohort (ECLS-K), which is merged with market prices available from the Quarterly Food at Home Price Database (QFAHPD) by county of residence. The results show that lagged prices for foods and drinks have more significant effects on children’s BMI compared to contemporaneous prices. This indicates that policies that affect food prices such as taxing or subsidizing would take time to have an effect on children’s weight.

PEER-EFFECTS IN OBESITY AMONG PUBLIC SCHOOL CHILDREN: A GRADE-LEVEL ANALYSIS AgEcon
Asirvatham, Jebaraj; Nayga, Rodolfo M., Jr.; Thomsen, Michael R..
We examine the role of peer effects in childhood obesity outcomes by investigating whether obesity rates among the highest graders in a public school has an effect on obesity rates among younger grades. We use a panel dataset with obesity prevalence measured at the grade level. Our data are from Arkansas public schools. Results provide evidence that changes in the obesity prevalence at the highest grade are associated with changes in obesity prevalence at younger grades. The magnitude of the peer effect depends on the type of school, and we find statistically significant peer effects in both elementary and high schools but not in middle schools. These effects are also larger in high schools than in elementary schools. We use falsification tests to provide...
