Evaluation of winter temperatures on apple budbreak using grafted twigs Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Hawerroth,Fernando José; Herter,Flavio Gilberto; Petri,José Luiz; Marafon,Anderson Carlos; Leonetti,Jeison Furtado.
Temperature is the main climate factor related to induction, maintenance and dormancy release in apple (Malus domestica Borkh.). The inadequate chilling exposure in apples causes budbreak problems, resulting in decrease in yield potential. Thus, the knowledge of physiological principles and environmental factors determining the dormancy phenomenon, especially winter temperature effects, it is necessary for the efficient selection of cultivars in a productive region. In addition, it is indispensable to adapt the orchard management aiming to decrease the problems caused by lack chilling during winter. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of different thermal conditions during the dormancy period on budbreak of apple cultivars....

Advances in the production of temperate fruits in the tropics Agronomy
Pio, Rafael; Souza, Filipe Bittencourt Machado de; Kalcsits, Lee; Bisi, Rayane Barcelos; Farias, Daniela da Hora.
The present study aimed to review the advances in the production of temperate fruits to determine future research directions that improve production in the tropics. Temperate fruits are no longer only produced in regions characterized by a cold winter period. These fruits are also produced in the sub-tropical and tropical regions characterized by mild winter or even the absence of chilling conditions often required by the tree to break dormancy. Currently, temperate fruit production is possible in certain regions of South America, Africa and Asia that are near to the Equator. However, temperate tree fruit production in tropical regions requires modified techniques to overcome dormancy and allow adequate flowering, growth and productivity. The main...

Mild temperatures on bud breaking dormancy in peaches Ciência Rural
Chavarria,Geraldo; Herter,Flávio Gilberto; Raseira,Maria do Carmo Bassols; Rodrigues,Alexandre Couto; Reisser,Carlos; Silva,João Baptista da.
The search for low chill cultivars for peach production in areas with low chill accumulation (temperatures below 7.2°C) has stimulated studies about the higher temperatures effects on low chill cultivars. The objective of this research was to evaluate the influence of mild temperatures on flowering and leafing of 'Turmalina' and 'Ágata' cultivars with low and medium low chilling requirements, respectively. Plants obtained by grafting flower twigs in the autumn, after the grafting, were submitted to chilling treatments (150, 250, 350, 500 and 672 hours) at three temperature levels (5°C, 10°C and 15°C). After the end of the treatments, the plants had been taken to greenhouse (20°C±5°C) and evaluated weekly. The results showed that satisfactory flower and...
