Effect of exercise on occurrence of diurnal rhythms of plasma ions and metabolites in Thoroughbred racehorses Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Viana,P.C.R.; Caldas-Bussiere,M.C.; Marins,R.S.Q.S.; Menna-Barreto,L.S.; Cury,L.J..
Records of plasma calcium (Ca++), phosphorus (Pi), potassium (K+), sodium (Na+), chloride (Cl-), magnesium (Mg++), iron (Fe++), glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides and total protein levels were measured to determine the effects of exercise on occurrence of diurnal rhythms in Throughbred racehorses (n=7) under physical training. Physical activities consisted of gallop on the track and walking. Blood samples were collected from jugular vein every 4h over a 48h period. Plasma Ca++, K+, Mg++ and Na+ levels were obtained by flame photometry; and, Pi, Cl-, Fe++, glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides and total protein levels were measured by colorimetric tests using visible UV spectrophotometry. The data were analyzed using a 24h period to each exercise performed....

Analysis of rhythmic variance - ANORVA. A new simple method for detecting rhythms in biological time series Biol. Res.
Celec,Peter.
Cyclic variations of variables are ubiquitous in biomedical science. A number of methods for detecting rhythms have been developed, but they are often difficult to interpret. A simple procedure for detecting cyclic variations in biological time series and quantification of their probability is presented here. Analysis of rhythmic variance (ANORVA) is based on the premise that the variance in groups of data from rhythmic variables is low when a time distance of one period exists between the data entries. A detailed stepwise calculation is presented including data entry and preparation, variance calculating, and difference testing. An example for the application of the procedure is provided, and a real dataset of the number of papers published per day in...

Low-cost automatic activity data recording system BJMBR
Moraes,M.F.D.; Ferrarezi,C.; Mont'Alverne,F.J.A.; Garcia-Cairasco,N..
We describe a low-cost, high quality device capable of monitoring indirect activity by detecting touch-release events on a conducting surface, i.e., the animal's cage cover. In addition to the detecting sensor itself, the system includes an IBM PC interface for prompt data storage. The hardware/software design, while serving for other purposes, is used to record the circadian activity rhythm pattern of rats with time in an automated computerized fashion using minimal cost computer equipment (IBM PC XT). Once the sensor detects a touch-release action of the rat in the upper portion of the cage, the interface sends a command to the PC which records the time (hours-minutes-seconds) when the activity occurred. As a result, the computer builds up several files...

The brain decade in debate: IV. Chronobiology BJMBR
Aguilar-Roblero,R.; Aréchiga,H.; Ashkenazi,I.; Burioka,N.; Cipolla-Neto,J.; Cornélissen,G.; Markus,R.; Marques,N.; Menezes,A.A.L.; Monk,T.H.; Ralph,M.; Valdez-Ramirez,P.; Menna-Barreto,L..
The present article is the adapted version of an electronic symposium organized by the Brazilian Society of Neuroscience and Behavior (SBNeC) which took place on June 14, 2000. The text is divided into three sections: I. The main issues, II. Chronodrugs, and III. Methods. The first section is dedicated to the perspectives of chronobiology for the next decade, with opinions about the trends of future research being emitted and discussed. The second section deals mostly with drugs acting or potentially acting on the organism's timing systems. In the third section there are considerations about relevant methodological issues concerning data analysis.

Evaluation of behavioral states among morning and evening active healthy individuals BJMBR
Hidalgo,M.P.; Camozzato,A.; Cardoso,L.; Preussler,C.; Nunes,C.E.; Tavares,R.; Posser,M.S.; Chaves,M.L.F..
The Horne-Östberg questionnaire partly covers some factors that may be important determinants of peak time and characterize patterns of behavior. We conducted a study for the evaluation of self-reported behavioral states (hunger sensation, availability for study, physical exercise, solving daily problems, and time preferences) as expressions of underlying cyclic activity. Three hundred and eighteen community subjects without history of medical, psychiatric, or sleep disorders were evaluated in a cross-sectional design. A self-report about daily highest level of activity was used to categorize individuals into morning, evening, and indifferently active. Time-related behavioral states were evaluated with 23 visual analog questions. The responses to most...
