Redescription of Hyphessobrycon flammeusMyers, 1924 (Ostariophysi: Characidae), a threatened species from Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Carvalho,Fernando R.; Jesus,Guilherme C. de; Langeani,Francisco.
One of the most gorgeous colored and endangered Hyphessobryconspecies, H. flammeus Myers, is redescribed. Diagnostic characters of the species are two vertically elongated humeral spots, no caudal peduncle blotch, 5-8 maxillary teeth, caudal fin hyaline, and longitudinal dark stripe of the body absent. Sexual dimorphism is present, with males being more colored than females and having bony hooks in the anal and pelvic fins, which are dark in their terminal portions. Comments about its occurrence in the upper rio Tietê drainage (upper rio Paraná basin), its conservation status, and the phylogenetic position into Characidae context are also presented.

Population structure and condition factor of Pseudotothyris obtusa (hypoptopomatinae) from three coastal streams in southern Brazil BABT
Takeuti,Denise de Freitas; Verani,José Roberto; Aranha,José Marcelo Rocha; Menezes,Márcia Santos de.
Population structure features and condition factor of Pseudotothyris obtusa were compared between three coastal streams in southern Brazil. Fishes were monthly collected through electric fishing and measured in the total length. Fifteen fishes from each stream were dissected to identify their sex. The structure in size, sex ratio and young/adults ratio of populations were analysed and the length-weight relationship was obtained. The condition factor (K1) and the relative condition factor (Kn) were calculated for each stream. Fishes were grouped in 11 lenght classes of 3mm. The intermediate and bigger size classes were preponderant in the "Mergulhão" and "Colônia Pereira" streams, and the smaller and intermediate ones in the "Ribeirão" stream. Females...

Longitudinal distribution of Hypostomus punctatus (Osteichthyes, Loricariidae) in a coastal stream from Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil BABT
Menezes,Márcia S. de; Caramaschi,Érica P..
Hypostomus punctatus was collected between June/1987 and July/1988, in three sampling stations with different features, along the Ubatiba stream (Maricá, Rio de Janeiro state). Sampling stations 2 and 3 were more similar (50% similarity) to each other. The species was frequent and persistent in all sampling stations. The size varied from 1.0 to 22.2 cm. The occurrence of different size classes along the stream was probably related to the kind of environment. Young forms prevailed in the total sample and were mainly collected next to the submersed riparian vegetation. Adults occurred just in sampling stations 1 and 2, and were found most often in rapids with rocky bottom, and in pools among submersed branches.

Electrofishing as a sampling technique for coastal stream fish populations and communities in the Southeast of Brazil BJB
MAZZONI,R.; FENERICH-VERANI,N.; CARAMASCHI,E. P..
Electrofishing adequacy was tested as a technique to obtain quantitative data of coastal stream fish populations and communities in the Southeast of Brazil. Seven field trips, between July/94 and July/95, were done in 5 localities of the Ubatiba fluvial system (Maricá, RJ). Seventeen species, among the 22 collected, had their numbers estimated through the Zipping method, the model used to test the sampling methodology. At each field trip, three removals with electrofishing were done in each locality and, according to the number of obtained species at each locality/field trip, we analysed 315 cases. Nineteen cases, among 315, showed failure condition. Estimates were significant (p < 0.01) in 96% of the studied cases. Non-significant cases were obtained...
