Microclimatic characterization and productivity of coffee plants grown under shade of pigeon pea in Southern Brazil PAB
Morais,Heverly; Caramori,Paulo Henrique; Ribeiro,Ana Maria de Arruda; Gomes,José Carlos; Koguishi,Mirian Sei.
Recent studies on coffee (Coffea arabica L.) cultivation in agroforestry systems in Southern Brazil have shown the potential of partial shading to improve management of this crop. The objective of this work was to evaluate microclimatic conditions and their effects on coffee production of plants shaded with pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) in comparison to unshaded ones, from May 2001 to August 2002 in Londrina, State of Paraná, Brazil. The appraised microclimatic characteristics were: global radiation, photosynthetic and radiation balance; air, leaf and soil temperatures; and soil humidity. Shading caused significant reduction in incident global solar radiation, photosynthetically active radiation and net radiation, and attenuated maximum leaf, air and soil...

ALTERNATIVE GROWTH SCENARIOS FOR UGANDAN COFFEE TO 2020 AgEcon
You, Liangzhi; Bolwig, Simon.
Coffee is the most important export crop in Uganda and an important source of income among smallholder farmers in large parts of the country. The Robusta type dominates coffee production and Ugandan Robusta is demanded by roasters as a component in certain blends due to its special taste qualities. However, a combination of events outside and within Uganda, especially the collapse of world coffee prices in the late 1990s, are eroding farmer incomes and export revenues and threaten the long-term viability of the industry. In this context, the paper first investigates the challenges faced by the Ugandan coffee industry, namely the decline in the world coffee market, changes in procurement strategies among coffee importers, the rapidly expanding market for...

Production Efficiency and Diversification in Mexican Coffee-Producing Districts AgEcon
Vedenov, Dmitry V.; Houston, Jack E.; Cardenas, Gabriela.
Coffee production system is analyzed for 24 municipios (districts) in Veracruz, Mexico, from 1997 to 2002. A stochastic frontier approach is used to estimate an input distance function and to evaluate production efficiency. Results show the production process to be stable over time despite global price fluctuations. Production of staple crop (corn) with either coffee or other cash crops results in increased efficiency as a result of the economies of complementarity, while production of coffee with other cash crops leads to lower efficiency. Factors contributing to higher efficiency included higher population density, road availability, and higher altitude, typically associated with production of higher-quality coffee.

Nonparametric Efficiency Analysis for Coffee Farms in Puerto Rico AgEcon
Gregory, Alexandra; Featherstone, Allen M..
Coffee production in Puerto Rico is labor intensive since harvest is done by hand for quality and topography conditions. Färe's nonparametric approach was used to estimate technical, allocative, scale and overall efficiency measures for coffee farms in Puerto Rico during the 2000 to 2004 period. On average Puerto Rico coffee farms were 46% technically efficient, 79% scale efficient, and 74% allocatively efficient.

Innovation Trajectories in Honduras’ Coffee Value Chain. Public and Private Influence on the Use of New Knowledge and Technology among Coffee Growers AgEcon
Hartwich, Frank; Fromm, Ingrid; Romero, Gustavo.
In this paper, results from a study on the use of improved coffee production technology schemes among smallholder coffee producers in three prominent coffee producing regions in Honduras are presented. The impact of various schemes (trajectories) in which different agents influence the producers’ decision to use new technologies was analyzed. In particular, there are differences in the influence of a) private coffee buying organizations and b) government and public development agencies on the innovation behavior of coffee growers. Drawing from network data that depict the internal and outbound connectedness of producers in three village communities in main coffee producing zones in Honduras, tools of social network analysis were applied to find out how...

Estilos gerenciais e eficácia administrativa na produção de café AgEcon
Vale, Sonia Maria Leite Ribeiro do; Teixeira, Marcelo Brandao; Sant'Anna, Julio Cezar Oliveira.
The objective of this article was to analyze the managerial styles in coffee farmers of two regions in Minas Gerais State, Brazil (Sul and Zona da Mata), and the difficulties which can be compromising the administrative effectiveness. Primary data were collected from forms applied to 56 coffee farmers, in the harvest period 2003/2004. To analyze the relation between the dominant managerial styles and the reached economic and technical performances in the activity, the analysis of simple correlation was used (coefficient of Pearson). Regressions were estimated to indicate as the situational variables had intervened in the styles. Among the main results it is important to point out that the producers, in general, presented as dominant managerial style 9,9,...

Aggregate stability by the "high energy moisture characteristic" method in an oxisol under differentiated management Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Silva,Érika Andressa da; Oliveira,Geraldo César de; Silva,Bruno Montoani; Carducci,Carla Eloize; Avanzi,Junior Cesar; Serafim,Milson Evaldo.
Studies testing the High Energy Moisture Characteristic (HEMC) technique in tropical soils are still incipient. By this method, the effects of different management systems can be evaluated. This study investigated the aggregation state of an Oxisol under coffee with Brachiaria between crop rows and surface-applied gypsum rates using HEMC. Soil in an experimental area in the Upper São Francisco region, Minas Gerais, was studied at depths of 0.05 and 0.20 m in coffee rows. The treatments consisted of 0, 7, and 28 Mg ha-1 of agricultural gypsum rates distributed on the soil surface of the coffee rows, between which Brachiaria was grown and periodically cut, and compared with a treatment without Brachiaria between coffee rows and no gypsum application. To...

Performance of a variable-rate distribution system for simultaneous fertilizer application AGRIAMBI
Barros,Murilo M. de; Volpato,Carlos E. S.; Silva,Fabio M. da; Conceição,Fagner G. da; Corrêa Júnior,Delorme; Ribeiro,Luiz F..
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of a variable-rate fertilizer distribution system for coffee crop, simultaneously applying two products. Two types of tests were performed: transversal deposition and longitudinal deposition. The transversal deposition test, with tarps, aimed to quantify the variations between programmed and applied doses, using a completely randomized design (CRD), in a factorial scheme, and the Scott-Knott test at p < 0.05. The longitudinal deposition test aimed to determine the distribution characteristics of the equipment along the displacement line, based on relative frequency values. In addition, the application rates on both sides of the distribution system were analysed using a CRD and the...
