Contract Farming in China: Perspectives of Smallholders AgEcon
Guo, Hongdong; Jolly, Robert W..
This paper explores the current status of contract farming in China by examining data from a survey of Chinese householders. The survey indicates that the actual proportion of householders engaged in contract farming is relatively low and significantly less than the proportion of householders willing to produce under contract. The primary reason for householders not participating in contract farming is the absence of opportunities, particularly for small size farms. Householders identify price stability and market access as the key motivations to participate in contract farming. Middleman and agribusiness firms were the most important organizations for householders to contract with.

Access to Dynamic Markets for Small Commercial Farmers: The Case of Potato Production in the Peruvian Andes AgEcon
Escobal D'Angelo, Javier; Torero, Maximo.
The purpose of this study is twofold. On one hand, the objective is to assess the impact of new and more complex contracting schemes, as opposed to traditional marketing channels, on small farmers’ welfare. On the other hand, the study explores which may be the critical factors that determine the small farmers’ participation in these institutional arrangements. In this context, two critical factors are stressed. The first one has to do with access to credit and the second one is the size of the agricultural plot. In order to examine the decision of farmers to access the dynamic markets, the paper follows the study of Lapar et al (2003). The paper also follows impact evaluation techniques to identify the differences in the performance of farmers with access...

Food Security, Energy Equity, and the Global Commons: a Computable Village Model applied to sub-Saharan Africa AgEcon
Winter, Etti Maria; Fasse, Anja.
This paper examines potential of contract farming as a rural development tool by revealing its effect on productivity and income of small holders in tea production in north-western Vietnam. In the present research, three economic analyses are applied. First, the technical efficiency of tea production is estimated by using stochastic frontier model. The results show that contract farming achieved significantly higher technical efficiency compared to non-contract farming. Second, logit model is investigated to determine the influential socio-economic characteristics of households for contract participation. The model indicates that social relationship of households, such as the membership in the communist party, play an important role in contract...

Trade, Standards and Poverty. Evidence from Senegal AgEcon
Maertens, Miet; Swinnen, Johan F.M..
The debate on trade and poverty is reinforced by recent studies on the role of standards. It is argued that increasing standards act as trade barriers for developing countries and cause further marginalization of the poor. This paper is the first to quantify income and poverty effects of such high-standards trade and to integrate labor market effects, by using company and household survey data from the vegetable export chain in Senegal. We find that exports have grown sharply despite increasing standards, resulting in important income gains and poverty reduction. Our estimates indicate that poverty is 14 % points lower due to vegetable exports. Tightening food standards induced a shift from smallholder contract-based farming to large-scale integrated...

Impact of Contract Farming on Income: Linking Small Farmers, Packers, and Supermarkets in China AgEcon
Miyata, Sachiko; Minot, Nicholas; Hu, Dinghuan.
Contract farming is seen by proponents as a way to raise small-farm income by delivering technology and market information to small farmers, incorporating them into remunerative new markets. Critics, however, see it as a strategy for agribusiness firms to pass production risk to farmers, taking advantage of an unequal bargaining relationship. There is also concern that contract farming will worsen rural income inequality by favoring larger farmers. This study examines these issues in Shandong Province, China, using survey data collected from 162 apple and green onion farmers and interviews with four contracting firms in 2005. Using a probit model to estimate participation in a contract-farming scheme, we find little evidence that contracting firms prefer...

VERTICAL INTEGRATION IN AGRICULTURE AND CONTRACT FARMING AgEcon
Rehber, Erkan.
It has been widely argued recently that agriculture is undergoing a process of vertical integration with allied industries. One of the worldwide ways of vertical integration in agriculture is contract farming. Contract farming is a continually evolving process. Worldwide applications of contract farming have shown that the terms of contracts are shaped by their own conditions and varied from product to product. Also, each country has its own experiences. Contract farming has many advantages for both producers/growers and integrators, besides some inherent disadvantages and failures regarding its implementation. Some measures, however, could be taken to outweigh these advantages for both sides. In this study, first of all, a brief history is presented...

Promoting the Kenyan Potato Value Chain: Can Contract Farming Help Build Trust and Reduce Transaction Risks? AgEcon
Hoeffler, Heike.
African economies are increasingly confronted with changing food and commodity markets, due to globalisation, economic liberalisation and urbanisation. Subsequently, consumer preferences change. This poses new opportunities but also challenges to small-scale producers, traders and processors along agricultural value chains. The value chain is increasingly seen as an important development framework, with contract farming being viewed as an instrument for improving value chain performance by reducing transaction costs and risks and by building trust in vertical cooperation. This paper uses the case study of the potato value chain in Kenya to examine these assumptions. It is shown that contract farming can be used to reduce transaction costs and risks, and...

Interlinked Transactions in Cash Cropping Economies: The Determinants of Farmer Participation and Performance in the Zambezi River Valley of Mozambique AgEcon
Benfica, Rui M.S.; Tschirley, David L.; Boughton, Duncan.
This paper investigates the determinants of participation and performance of tobacco contract farmers, and the effects of participation on overall crop and household incomes in the Zambezi Valley of Mozambique. We test the existence of threshold effects in land holdings and educational attainment to identify the types of farmers that benefit. Several results stand out. First, participation in the schemes is driven by factor endowments, asset ownership and alternative income opportunities, and very little by demographic factors. Second, we find no returns to education in tobacco; this result is consistent with previous research in Mozambique but surprising in an agronomically demanding crop like tobacco. Third, there appear to be economies of scale in...

The aim of the research was to study the importance of household and community labours in tomato seed production. The data were collected by group interviews with key informants in Lad Na Pieng Village, Pier Fan Village and Hin Lad Village. Semi-structured interviews were conduction on the selected 66 households along the line of predesigned main topics. The study revealed that contract farming for tomato seed production has been launching for over 30 years. Farmers have planned to grow tomato and other plants relevant to the availability of labour in household and community. Household labours were an important condition for farm activities and tomato plantation for seed production. Tomato seed production needs an intensive and good taking care for all...

Factors that influence the use of contract farming by southern Chilean farmers Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Morales,Liliana; Echeverría,Rodrigo; Barrera,María del V.
Unlike in the central zone of Chile, the use of contract farming (CF) is uncommon in the southern regions of the country, and few studies have attempted to explain this situation. The objective of this study was to analyze the factors that influence the use of CF in southern Chile. The methodology consisted of two approaches: a quantitative approach, wherein a multinomial logit model was applied to data obtained from questionnaires completed by 384 southern producers, and a qualitative approach that included in-depth individual interviews with professionals, officials of public institutions, and producer focus groups. The main results show that producers with high educational levels, large farms, and production oriented toward the export market who are...
