Spray adjuvant characteristics affecting agricultural spraying drift REA
OLIVEIRA,RONE B. DE; ANTUNIASSI,ULISSES R.; GANDOLFO,MARCO A..
This study defined the main adjuvant characteristics that may influence or help to understand drift formation process in the agricultural spraying. It was evaluated 33 aqueous solutions from combinations of various adjuvants and concentrations. Then, drifting was quantified by means of wind tunnel; and variables such as percentage of droplets smaller than 50 μm (V50), 100 μm (V100), diameter of mean volume (DMV), droplet diameter composing 10% of the sprayed volume (DV0.1), viscosity, density and surface tension. Assays were performed in triplicate, using Teejet XR8003 flat fan nozzles at 200 kPa (medium size droplets). Spray solutions were stained with Brilliant Blue Dye at 0.6% (m/ v). DMV, V100, viscosity cause most influence on drift hazardous....

Partial diallel and potential of super sweet corn inbred lines bt 2 to obtain hybrids Horticultura Brasileira
Xavier,Larissa Fernanda S; Pestana,Jéssica Kelly; Sekiya,Alline; Krause,Matheus D; Moreira,Rosângela Maria P; Ferreira,Josué M.
ABSTRACT The aims of this study were to determine the potential of S4 super sweet corn inbred lines for hybrid synthesis, identify the predominant types of gene action and correlations among different traits, significant for breeding programs. The 81 hybrids obtained from a partial diallel 9x9 and three checks were evaluated. A complete randomized block design, with three replicates, and two sowing seasons was used. We could notice significant hybrid effects, general combining ability (GCA) of GI and GII groups and specific combining ability (SCA) in relation to evaluated traits, highlighting the existence of hybrids with superior performance and the expression of additive and non-additive effects. The inbred lines: L1, L3, L6 and L9 (GI) and L1’, L7’ and...

Correlations between dioxin-like and indicators PCBs: Potential consequences for environmental studies involving fish or sediment ArchiMer
Babut, M.; Miege, C.; Villeneuve, B.; Abarnou, Alain; Duchemin, J.; Marchand, P.; Narbonne, J. F..
Among the numerous PCB congeners, most of the dioxin-like PCBs (DL-PCBs) need to be characterized by hyphenated techniques. It has been shown in several instances that these congeners are well related to the total PCB content in fish. We examined datasets collected mainly in France, on freshwater and marine fish and sediments. A statistical model linking DL- and indicator PCBs was developed for a dataset composed of freshwater fishes, and proved to predict well DL-PCBs from indicator PCBs in all other fish sets, including marine ones. Type II error rates remained low in almost all fish sets. A similar correlation was observed in sediments. Non-dioxin-like PCBs elicit various adverse effects and represent 95% of the total PCBs. A European guideline for them...

Quantifying the genetic parameters of feed efficiency in juvenile Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus ArchiMer
De Verdal, Hugues; Vandeputte, Marc; Mekkawy, Wagdy; Chatain, Beatrice; Benzie, John A. H..
Background: Improving feed efficiency in fish is crucial at the economic, social and environmental levels with respect to developing a more sustainable aquaculture. The important contribution of genetic improvement to achieve this goal has been hampered by the lack of accurate basic information on the genetic parameters of feed efficiency in fish. We used video assessment of feed intake on individual fish reared in groups to estimate the genetic parameters of six growth traits, feed intake, feed conversion ratio (FCR) and residual feed intake in 40 pedigreed families of the GIFT strain of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Feed intake and growth were measured on juvenile fish (22.4g mean body weight) during 13 consecutive meals, representing 7days of...

Palaeobiogeographical and palaeobiological aspects of mid- and Late Cretaceous ammonite evolution and bio-events in the Russian Pacific Naturalis
Jagt-Yazykova, E.A..
Both faunal endemicity and provincialism in the mid- and Late Cretaceous of the Pacific realm complicate the recognition of stage boundaries in that area. Correlations with other areas (e.g., Europe, United States Western Interior, Pacific coast of North and South America) therefore have to rely solely on event stratigraphy; not only extinctions, but all biotic events must be considered. During the Cretaceous, Pacific faunas were characterised not so much by the presence of typical ‘Boreal’ assemblages, but rather by the absence or extreme paucity of other widely distributed biota. Clearly, faunal similarities depended more on regional facies development than on their spatial distribution. The regional diversity curve reflects all global mass extinctions,...

Associations between vegetative and production traits in guava tree full-sib progenies PAB
Santos,Paulo Ricardo dos; Preisigke,Sandra da Costa; Viana,Alexandre Pio; Cavalcante,Natan Ramos; Sousa,Carlos Misael Bezerra de; Amaral Júnior,Antônio Teixeira de.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to estimate the genetic parameters and to evaluate the associations between vegetative and yield characteristics, in full-sib progenies of guava tree (Psidium guajava). The following characteristics were evaluated: yield per plant, number of fruits, fruit mass, plant height, stem diameter, and canopy volume. The estimation of genetic parameters was obtained by the REML/Blup procedure. Based on the breeding values predicted by Blup, the genetic and canonical correlations were estimated, and the genetic correlation coefficients were unfolded into direct and indirect effects on the character yield per plant using path analysis. Genetic variability was estimated for number of fruits (567.66) and yield per plant...

INSURING EGGS IN BASKETS AgEcon
Hart, Chad E.; Hayes, Dermot J.; Babcock, Bruce A..
The vast majority of crop and revenue insurance policies sold in the United States are single-crop policies that insure against low yields or low revenues for each crop grown on a particular farm. This practice of insuring one crop at a time runs counter to the traditional risk management practice of diversifying across several enterprises to avoid putting all of ones eggs in a single basket. This paper examines the construction of whole-farm crop revenue insurance programs to include livestock. The whole-farm insurance product covers crop revenues from corn and soybeans and livestock revenues from hog production. The results show that at coverage levels of 95 percent or lower, the fair insurance premiums for this product on a well-diversified Iowa hog...

The role of grazier motivations and risk attitudes in the adoption of grazing best management practices AgEcon
Greiner, Romy; Miller, Owen; Patterson, Louisa.
The onus on landholders in relation to environmental performance is ever increasing. One tool for achieving environmental improvements is the design and promotion of region-specific ‘best management practices’ (BMPs). These are conservation practices aimed at reducing diffuse source pollution from agricultural lands and thus improving end-of-catchment water quality. A suite of grazing BMPs were developed for the Burdekin Dry Tropics region in a consultative fashion but without explicit consideration of knowledge of adoption processes. It is known from the literature that farmers’ goals and risk perceptions in particular influence adoption decisions. This paper utilises the data from an earlier grazier survey to explore to what extent grazier motivations...

INSURING UNCERTAINTY IN VALUE-ADDED AGRICULTURE: ETHANOL PRODUCTION AgEcon
Paulson, Nicholas D.; Babcock, Bruce A.; Hart, Chad E.; Hayes, Dermot J..
A wide variety of insurance products is available to agricultural producers to insure against yield or price risks in the markets for the raw commodities they produce. Value-added enterprises, such as ethanol production, have been expanding over the last decade. This paper outlines the development of an insurance product aimed at corn producers who are members of an ethanol production cooperative. The product has the potential to provide these producers with a new and useful risk management tool to insure against price risks in the markets for corn, distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS), ethanol, and natural gas. Monte Carlo analysis is used to develop fair premiums at various coverage levels. A historical correlation structure is imposed on the...

Comparison of the Casagrande and Fall Cone Methods for Liquid Limit Determinations in Different Clay Soils Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Crevelin,Letícia Garcia; Bicalho,Kátia Vanessa.
ABSTRACT The liquid limit (LL) is an important parameter for soil classification systems. The use of the cone penetrometer technique for measuring the liquid limit is an attractive alternative method since the percussion method is highly operator dependent. In this article, the importance of specifying the procedure and equipment used to determine the LL of a clay soil is highlighted using LL test results conducted on different clay soils. The results of LL, obtained by the percussion method proposed by Casagrande (LLc) and by the penetration cone method (LLp) on clay soils of different geological origins and plasticity were compared. The LLp values were determined using the British cone (20 mm fall cone penetration) method. The LLc values were determined...

Associations among production and physicochemicalquality fruit traits in Passion fruit populations subjected to three cycles of intrapopulation recurrent selection Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Cavalcante,Natan Ramos; Viana,Alexandre Pio; Santos,Paulo Ricardo dos; Preisigke,Sandra da Costa; Ribeiro,Rodrigo Moreira; Tofanelli,Evillyn Jacinto.
Abstract The present study was developed to identify the direct and indirect effects of fruit production traits in passion fruit on traits of agronomic interest as well as determine possible changes in associations between the characters after three cycles of recurrent selection. Twenty three half-sibling progenies were evaluated for the characteristics number of fruits per plant; fruit mass per plant (g); pulp percentage (%); fruit length and diameter (mm); peel thickness (mm); total soluble solids content (ºBrix); pH; and yield per plant (kg). Fruit production per plant was considered the main variable, while the others were considered explanatory variables. Within-family heritability (h2ad) values were lower than the mean heritability of the progeny...

Path analysis under multicollinearity for papaya production of the solo and Formosa groups Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Moreira,Sarah Ola; Kuhlcamp,Karin Tesch; Barros,Fabíola Lacerda de Souza; Oliveira,Sabrina Batista de; Trindade,Roberto dos Santos.
Abstract Correlations and path analysis allow the understanding of the interrelations between characteristics of interest to the plant breeding. However, in order for their results to be reliable, the undesirable effect of multicollinearity must be excluded. The objective of this study was to estimate the correlations and their partitioning in direct and indirect effects, by path analysis, on the fruit production per plant (FP) of papaya from the heterotic Solo and Formosa groups, using two different strategies to circumvent multicollinearity. Eleven agronomic variables were evaluated in twelve papaya genotypes from the Solo group and nine from the Formosa group. Path analysis was obtained with the FP as the basic variable and to eliminate...

Selection objectives and criteria for sheep in Central Brazil R. Bras. Zootec.
McManus,Concepta; Pinto,Bruno Freitas; Martins,Rafhael Felipe Saraiva; Louvandini,Helder; Paiva,Samuel Rezende; Braccini Neto,José; Paim,Tiago do Prado.
Three production systems for sheep (Low - L, Medium - M and High - H technology), with increasing technological levels, were studied under conditions in the Center-west of Brazil, to determine economic weights and selection indices of important traits. Receipts and costs were simulated using an economic simulator to calculate the structure of the operational costs. Only characteristics that were responsible for more than 10% of the profit were studied, which included: number of weaned lambs, food consumption (ewe and lamb), weight of carcass and weight of female lambs sold for reproduction. Regardless of the index used (profitability or yield) or system (L, M or H), the economic weights are larger for the number of lambs weaned per ewe. With improvement in...
