Scale and ecosystem services: how do observation, management, and analysis shift with scale—lessons from Québec Ecology and Society
Raudsepp-Hearne, Ciara; McGill University; ciara.rh@gmail.com; Peterson, Garry D; Stockholm Resilience Centre, Stockholm University; garry.peterson@su.se.
Ecosystem service assessment and management are shaped by the scale at which they are conducted; however, there has been little systematic investigation of the scales associated with ecosystem service processes, such as production, benefit distribution, and management. We examined how social-ecological spatial scale impacts ecosystem service assessment by comparing how ecosystem service distribution, trade-offs, and bundles shift across spatial scales. We used a case study in Québec, Canada, to analyze the scales of production, consumption, and management of 12 ecosystem services and to analyze how interactions among 7 of these ecosystem services change across 3 scales of observation (1, 9, and 75 km²). We found that ecosystem service...

Analysis of profitability and risk in new agriculture in a Himalayan watershed by using dynamic non-linear programming model AgEcon
Sharma, Rakesh Kumar; Sankhayan, Prem Lall; Singh, Ranveer.
Cropping pattern in the Himalayan region of India has undergone a significant change in the recent past. Introduction of horticultural crops of vegetables, fruits and flowers have led to more intensive agriculture. Such a change, resulting in higher incomes and improvements of the overall living conditions has, however, been accompanied with increased income risk. This emphasises a need for proper analysis of the cropping pattern, at an appropriate scale, such as, a micro watershed. This was achieved by constructing a dynamic non-linear programming model incorporating appropriate objective function, constraints and crop and livestock activity budgets along with risk component present in the gross returns. The model was then solved under alternate policy...

Genetic variation and realized genetic gain from rubber tree improvement Scientia Agricola
Gonçalves,Paulo de Souza; Aguiar,Adriano Tosoni da Eira; Costa,Reginaldo Brito da; Gonçalves,Elaine Cristine Piffer; Scaloppi Júnior,Erivaldo José; Branco,Roberto Botelho Ferraz.
Breeding cycle in rubber extends to 20-30 years between pollination and yield assessment, distributed over three selection stages. Five hectares of small scale trial of rubber tree [Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr. de Juss.) Muell.-Arg.], was established in the Northwestern region of São Paulo State, Brazil. The population comprises 98 clones mostly derived from intensively selected plus tree in the natural forest of rubber tree in the Amazon. Three open pollinated progeny tests were established in three experimental stations. Seedlings from 98 progenies including a commercial check (CC) were planted in each one of the three locations. Assessments were made when the plants were one, two and three years old. The variation among progenies for girth was...
