Organic Eprints
Gargoloff, Natalia Agustina; Abbona, Esteban Andres; Sarandón, Santiago Javier.

Biofortification of food chain with selenium Organic Eprints
Seppänen, Mervi; Kontturi, Juha; Hartikainen, Helinä.
Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient for humans and animals which is circulated to food chain via crop plants. Agronomic biofortification with Se is used in areas where the soil Se content is low and Se deficiency causes health problems. Brassica species are efficient in accumulation of soil Se and therefore an attractive choice of species for biofortification. Se uptake and translocation was studied in B. rapa and B. napus in field experiments applied with 0, 6 or 20 mg Se ha-1 as Na2SeO4 and foliar sprays of 30 mg Se ha-1 as Na2SeO4 or Na2SeO3. In addition, a HPLC-ICP-MS based method to identify and quantify organic Se-compounds in seeds and meals was developed. High concentration of Se accumulated in seeds (1.89 μg g-1) and after oil...

ADOPCIÓN POTENCIAL DE ALTERNATIVAS BIOLOGICAS POR LOS CULTIVADORES DE PLATANO DEL QUINDÍO, COLOMBIA, BAJO LA PERSPECTIVA DEL ANALISIS MULTICRITERIAL Organic Eprints
María Londoño M., Ángela; Chagüezá V., Yamileth; Velásquez I., Elena; Lavelle, Patrick; Asakawa, Neuza.

Sesquiterpene lactone containing extracts from two cultivars of forage chicory (Cichorium intybus) show distinctive chemical profiles and in vitro activity against Ostertagia ostertagi Organic Eprints
Peña-Espinoza, Miguel; Boas, Ulrik; Williams, Andrew R.; Thamsborg, Stig M.; Simonsen, Henrik T.; Enemark, Heidi L..
The study investigated direct anthelmintic effects of sesquiterpene lactones (SL)-containing extracts from forage chicory against free-living and parasitic stages of Ostertagia ostertagi. Freeze-dried leaves from chicory cultivars ‘Spadona’ and ‘Puna II’ were extracted using methanol/water. Total SL were further fractionated by solid-phase extraction and resulting extracts were characterised by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). O. ostertagi eggs from faeces of mono-infected calves were hatched and L1 were used in a larval feeding inhibition assay (LFIA), while cultured L3 were used in a larval exsheathment inhibition assay (LEIA). Adult worms were immediately recovered after slaughter and used for motility inhibition assays (AMIA). Electron...

OK-Net Arable online knowledge platform Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, Ilse A.; Jensen, Allan Leck; Jørgensen, Margit Styrbæk; Kristensen, Helene; Conder, Malgorzata; Micheloni, Cristina; Moeskops, Bram.
The complexity of organic farming requires farmers to have a very high level of knowledge and skills, but exchange on organic farming techniques remains limited. In order to increase productivity and quality in organic arable cropping in Europe, the thematic network OK-Net Arable under Horizon 2020 has the aim to improve the exchange of innovative and traditional knowledge among farmers, farm advisers and scientists. An online platform for knowledge exchange has been created, offering innovative education and end-user material as well as communication between stakeholders. A number of specific tools – providing information about how to put existing knowledge from research and practise into use – have been chosen. They are presented on the platform with the...

PERSYST, a model for ex ante assessment of cropping systems performances. Adaptation to organic farming in the Ile-de-France region Organic Eprints
Guichard, L.; Ballot, R.; Glachant, C.; Aubert, C..
PERSYST is a web software for ex ante assessment of crop yield that takes explicitely into account the cropping system (i.e. crop rotation and crop management) perspective. Environmental and economic indicators are calculated at crop rotation scale to complete the previous yield assessment. In 2012, a research program enabled the model adaptation to organic systems, taking into account weed management and organic inputs supply. This program also allowed to parameterize the web software in the Ile-de-France region for 8 soil types and 18crops. Parameterization has been validated for the most common situations. Validation remains to be done for less common ones. When completed, validation will make it possible to test the software in promising situations of...

Incomplete split-plots in designs with many entries – a compromise between split-plots and randomized complete block designs Organic Eprints
Kristensen, Kristian.
The paper shows how the Alpha-design (also known as generalised lattice) may be used for constructing incomplete split-plot designs and describes 4 different methods (A, B, C and D) of construction. Intra-block efficiency factors and theoretical considerations are used to compare the methods. Based on those considerations method B was considered to be the most appropriate method for trials where tests for interaction between the two factors were important and thus this method was used and most of the paper deals with trials based on this construction method. The incomplete split-plots were superior to traditional split-plots in most cases – and the increase in efficiency of the designs can be quite large – especially for comparisons involving the...

Noncrop flowering plants restore top-down herbivore control in agricultural fields Organic Eprints
Balmer, Oliver; Pfiffner, Lukas; Schied, Johannes; Willareth, Martin; Leimgruber, Andrea; Luka, Henryk; Traugott, Michael.
Herbivore populations are regulated by bottom-up control through food availability and quality and by top-down control through natural enemies. Intensive agricultural monocultures provide abundant food to specialized herbivores and at the same time negatively impact natural enemies because monocultures are depauperate in carbohydrate food sources required by many natural enemies. As a consequence, herbivores are released from both types of control. Diversifying intensive cropping systems with flowering plants that provide nutritional resources to natural enemies may enhance top-down control and contribute to natural herbivore regulation. We analyzed how noncrop flowering plants planted as “companion plants” inside cabbage (Brassica oleracea) fields and as...

Suitability of drought tolerance indices for selecting alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) genotypes under organic farming in Austria Organic Eprints
Moghaddam, Ali; Vollmann, Johann; Wanek, Wolfgang; Ardakani, M. Reza; Raza, Amir; Pietsch, Gabriele; Friedel, Juergen K..
In eastern Austria, alfalfa is usually grown as a rainfed crop in crop rotations in organic farming systems, where year-to-year rainfall fluctuations cause different levels of drought stress. To identify the suitability of different alfalfa genotypes and drought tolerance indices, 18 contrasting alfalfa genotypes were evaluated under irrigated and rainfed conditions at the research station of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU), Vienna, Austria, during 2006-08. The first study year (2006) was considered as the establishment year. Five drought tolerance selection indices were estimated based on shoot dry matter, total biomass yield and biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) data. The correlation between irrigated and rainfed...
