Zero-inflated Poisson regression models for QTL mapping applied to tick-resistance in a Gyr x Holstein F2 population Genet. Mol. Biol.
Silva,Fabyano Fonseca; Tunin,Karen P.; Rosa,Guilherme J.M.; Silva,Marcos V.B. da; Azevedo,Ana Luisa Souza; Verneque,Rui da Silva; Machado,Marco Antonio; Packer,Irineu Umberto.
Nowadays, an important and interesting alternative in the control of tick-infestation in cattle is to select resistant animals, and identify the respective quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and DNA markers, for posterior use in breeding programs. The number of ticks/animal is characterized as a discrete-counting trait, which could potentially follow Poisson distribution. However, in the case of an excess of zeros, due to the occurrence of several noninfected animals, zero-inflated Poisson and generalized zero-inflated distribution (GZIP) may provide a better description of the data. Thus, the objective here was to compare through simulation, Poisson and ZIP models (simple and generalized) with classical approaches, for QTL mapping with counting phenotypes...

Risk factors for stillbirths and mortality during the first 24 h of life on dairy farms in Hokkaido, Japan 2005-2009 OAK
Kayano, M.; Kadohira, M.; Stevenson, M. A..
This was a retrospective cohort study using data from the insurance scheme provided by the Japanese Mutual Aid Association (NOSAI). The population of interest comprised all cattle born on NOSAI-client farms in the Japanese prefecture of Hokkaido, Japan for the period 1 April 2005-31 March 2009. The outcome of interest was whether or not at least one calf was stillborn, had died during delivery or died during the first 24 hours of life for a given calving event, termed first 24h mortality risk. A mixed-effects logistic regression model was developed to identify explanatory variables associated with first 24h mortality risk. The final data set comprised details of 1,281,737 calving events on a total of 5172 dairy herds from 19 NOSAI branches located...

Possible Implications for U.S. Agriculture From Adoption of Select Dietary Guidelines AgEcon
Buzby, Jean C.; Wells, Hodan Farah; Vocke, Gary.
To help Americans meet nutritional requirements while staying within caloric recommendations, the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans encourage consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole-grain products, and fat-free or low-fat milk or milk products. This report provides one view of the potential implications for U.S. agriculture if Americans changed their current consumption patterns to meet some of those guidelines. For Americans to meet the fruit, vegetable, and whole-grain recommendations, domestic crop acreage would need to increase by an estimated 7.4 million harvested acres, or 1.7 percent of total U.S. cropland in 2002. To meet the dairy guidelines, consumption of milk and milk products would have to increase by 66 percent; an increase of that...

Dairy Food Consumption, Production, and Policy in Japan AgEcon
Campo, Isabelle Schluep; Beghin, John C..
We explore and investigate Japanese dairy markets. We first provide an overview of consumer demand and how it evolved after World War II. Using historical data and econometric estimates of Japanese dairy demand, we identify economic, cultural, and demographic forces that have been shaping consumption patterns. Then we summarize the characteristics of Japanese milk production and dairy processing and policies affecting them. We next describe the import regime and trade flows in dairy products. The analysis of the regulatory system of the dairy sector shows how its incentive structure affects the long-term prospects of various segments of the industry. The paper concludes with policy recommendations of how to reform the Japanese dairy sector.

JOHNE'S DISEASE ON U.S. DAIRY OPERATIONS AgEcon
Ott, Stephen L..
One objective of the NAHMS Dairy '96 Study was to assess dairy producer awareness of Johne's disease, estimate national and regional herd-level prevalence of Mycobacterium paratuberculosis infection, estimate economic losses due to Johne's disease on dairy operations, and describe use of recommended preventive measures on U.S. dairy operations. Data were collection from U.S. dairy operations with at least 30 milk cows in 20 states representing 79.4 percent of U.S. dairy cows via questionnaires administered to dairy managers and blood samples collected from milk cows by Veterinary Medical Officers and Animal Health Technicians. Sera were tested for antibodies to M. paratuberculosis using a commercially available ELISA. Results showed lack of...

Analyzing the Determinants of Technical Efficiency Among Traditional Dairy Farms in Wisconsin: A Quantile Regression Approach AgEcon
Chidmi, Benaissa; Solis, Daniel; Funtanilla, Margil; Cabrera, Victor E..
This study analyzes the determinants of TE among traditional dairy farms in the State of Wisconsin taking into account dairy farms’ heterogeneity. To do so, we first estimate a production frontier and the level of TE using the SPF framework. Then we analyze the determinants of TI using a quantile regression analysis. The results indicate that the determinants of TE affect in very specific ways farmers with different levels of TE. This result confirms our hypothesis on the importance of controlling for farm heterogeneity when analyzing the determinants of TE. This issue is also important from an empirical point of view. Policy makers could improve the effectiveness of their work by targeting specific agricultural services and aid designed for farmers with...

Revealing an Equitable Income Allocation among Dairy Farm Partnerships AgEcon
Dressler, Jonathan B.; Tauer, Loren W..
We formulate a method to determine an equitable division of dairy farm partnership income when partners provide unequal amounts of capital, labor, and management and empirically estimate this relationship. New York dairy farm financial data are used within fixed effects and random coefficient panel regression models to reveal a systematic division of dairy farm partnership income among operators’ labor, capital, and management while controlling for heterogeneity arising from differing herd size. Results indicate that controlling for time and heterogeneity across farms due to herd size are important factors when dividing net farm income among unpaid factors of production. Empirical estimates of allocating dairy farm partnership income to equity,...

FINITE MIXTURE ESTIMATION OF SIZE ECONOMIES AND COST FRONTIERS IN THE FACE OF MULTIPLE PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGIES AgEcon
Smith, H. Arlen; Taylor, C. Robert.
Finite mixture estimation (FME) is compared to estimated generalized least squares (EGLS) in the estimation of economies of size and production cost frontiers for Alabama dairy farms. FME provides several unique insights into the economic forces behind recent changes in Alabama's dairy industry. FME provides estimation of a stochastic average cost frontier with known statistical properties, which it was not otherwise possible to obtain using available stochastic frontier estimation packages.

The Effect of Recombinant Bovine Somatotropin on Patterns of Milk Production, Lactational Milk Estimates and Net Farm Income AgEcon
Judge, Lawrence J.; Lloyd, James W.; Bartlett, Paul C..
Bovine somatoropin (bST) alters total milk production and production patterns in dairy cows and understanding the economic benefits of bST for the dairy producer are critical. Holstein cows (n = 555) from four Michigan dairy farms were randomly assigned as untreated controls or to receive 500 mg of bovine somatotropin (PosilacR) administered every 14 days beginning at 63 to 69 days of lactation and continuing until approximately 21 days prior to the end of lactation or until the animal was removed from the herd. Average peak milk production was 50.8 kg / day and occurred at an average of 113 9 days of lactation for bST-treated cows while average peak production was 48.9 kg / day occurring at an average of 86.4 days of lactation for control cows; both...

THE IMPACT OF BIG-BOX STORES ON RETAIL FOOD PRICES AND THE CONSUMER PRICE INDEX AgEcon
Leibtag, Ephraim S..
Over the past 10 years, the growth of nontraditional retail food outlets has transformed the food market landscape, increasing the variety of shopping and food options available to consumers, as well as price variation in retail food markets. This report focuses on these dynamics and how they affect food price variation across store format types. The differences in prices across store formats are especially noteworthy when compared with standard measures of food price inflation over time. Over the past 20 years, annual food price changes, as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), have averaged just 3 percent per year, while food prices for similar products can vary by more than 10 percent across store formats at any one point in time. Since the...

Managing Price Risk in a Changing Policy Environment: The Case of the EU Dairy Industry AgEcon
O'Connor, Declan; Keane, Michael; Barnes, Edel.
The EU dairy industry faces an unprecedented level of change. The anticipated removal of milk quotas and the move to a less restricted global trade environment will provide the industry with both opportunities and challenges. The primary challenge will be the need for the industry to deal with more volatile prices. Active management of the risks associated with these more volatile prices will help to place the industry in a more competitive position. However this will require the industry and policy makers to embrace a new set of tools. For example the US dairy industry has been much more active in the management of risk and lessons from their experience provide a valuable insight into which tools may be more appropriate in an EU context.

Estimation of Treatment Effects of recombinant Bovine Somatotropin using Matching Samples AgEcon
Tauer, Loren W..
The production and profit impacts of recombinant Bovine Somatotropin (rbST) on select New York dairy farms were estimated using data over the years 1994 through 2004, by comparing matching farms which use and do not use rbST. The use of rbST increases milk production per cow and decreases the cost of production per hundredweight of milk. The cost penalty (cost reduction) is $0.39 per hundredweight for those currently using rbST to stop using rbST, while the average treatment effect is $0.73.
