Bio-economic management strategy evaluation of deepwater stocks using the FLBEIA model ArchiMer
Garcia, Dorleta; Urtizberea, Agurtzane; Diez, Guzman; Gil, Juan; Marchal, Paul.
Deepwater fish are characterized by long lifespans, late maturity and low productivity. This implies slow recovery from low biomass levels and it is, therefore, important to manage these stocks correctly to avoid overfishing. However, these stocks are generally data poor, which it makes difficult to apply quantitative assessment models on which to base their management. The management strategy evaluation (MSE) approach consists in evaluating the performance of management strategies by simulation before their implementation. In the evaluation, the main sources of uncertainty in a fishery system and its management process should be taken into account in order to find robust management strategies. Thus, the MSE approach is relevant to the management of...

Seamounts, plateaus and governance issues in the southwest Indian Ocean, with emphasis on fisheries management and marine conservation, using the Walters Shoal as a case study for implementing a protection framework ArchiMer

There is a growing interest in the management of seamounts of the South Western Indian Ocean (SWIO) both in waters under national jurisdictions and in the Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ). On the one hand, new scientific knowledge has been gathered through various oceanographic cruises during the past decade and, on the other hand, new agreements are under consideration globally to promote conservation and sustainable use of the biodiversity in the ABNJ, where the deep sea ecosystems associated to seamounts are a growing matter of concern. SWIO seamounts have attracted interests from fishing operators since the 1960s, while mining exploration contracts have been recently granted. Seamounts are known to shelter rich, fragile and poorly resilient...

Selección de peces marinos para cultivos intensivos en el Nororiente de Venezuela OceanDocs
Gómez-Gaspar, A..
The northeast coast of Venezuela is the most important fishing region in the country, the sardines (Sardinella aurita) and other species abound in its waters, the annual catch exceeds 300.000 mt. Several factors account for this fertility: an upwelling of subsurface waters, the influence of great South American rivers (notably the Orinoco river), the coastallagoons, and the presence of numerous islands. In the island of Margarita, the possibilities of cultivating 16 species or marine fishes have been studied, but so far only two species, the spadefish Chaetodipterus faber (Ephippidae) and the permit Trachinotus goodei (Carangjdae) show any potential of intensive production. Both species reach their commercial weight (300 - 400 p;) in less than one year,...

A review of 1973 -1982 tuna fishing activities within Nigeria's eez and the option for Nigeria OceanDocs
Ajayi, T.O..
Examination of published information on temperature, oxygen and other environmental preferences of tuna and tuna like fishes suggests that the Nigerian EEZ should have commercial quantities of the fishes. ICCAT historical catch and effort data analysed are confirmatory. Given the prevailing low level of maintenance consciousness, initial investments and skills required, purse-seine may not be decidedly superior to pole and line as the capture technique. Preferred sizes of vessel type and gear specific scenarios are described. It appears that fuel cost can attract some of the multinational fleets to Nigeria and that transhipment facilities and a local cannery are advantageous.

Monitoreo y prospección de orange roughy, año 2001 OceanDocs
Young, Z.; Díaz, E.; Bahamonde, R.; Tascheri, R.; Muñoz, Y.; Olivares, A.; Ortego, M.I.; Rivera, J.; Oliva, J..
