In this present research communication, selected engineering properties of lima beans and drying behaviour of beans using different dryers were studied. The results for geometric mean diameter and sphericity were found as 8.82 and 0.66. Bulk, tap and true densities were found as 568.1 kg/m3,625.8 kg/m3 and 769 kg/m 3 respectively. Arithmetic mean diameter, equivalent mean diameter and square mean diameter values were found to be 4.84 mm, 24.89 mm and 8.08 mm. Values for static coefficient of friction was highest on plywood surface followed by mild sheet and stainless steel. Ash content, crude fat and fiber content was found as 3.85%, 20.11% and 4.23 for lima beans. The drying behaviour of beans at three temperatures 40 oC,60 oC and 80oC at constant air... |

The drying process of turnip and drying rate curves were investigated at different temperatures (55, 70 and 85°C) with air flow rate of 1.5 m/s. Also effective diffusion coefficient and activation energy were calculated by using Arrhenius equation and Fick’s second law for infinite slab. The effective diffusivity varied between 5.471×10-10 and 8.966×10-10 in the range of (55°C to 85°C). The value of activation energy was found to be 16.013 kJ/mol. The mathematical models (Newton, Page, Modified Page, Henderson and Pabis, Logarithmic, Two term, Two term exponential, Wang and Singh, Simplified Fick’s diffusion, Modified Page –II, Verma, Midilli–Kucuk, Hii, Law and Cloke, Approximation of diffusion, Modified Henderson and Pabis) were fitted to the... |

The effect of drying behaviour on the drying rate and quality characteristics of potato slices in a vacuum-infrared drying system was studied. In this research, the effect of the infrared radiation powers (100, 150, and 200 W) and vacuum levels (20, 80, 140 mmHg and atmosphere pressure) at different slice thickness (1, 2 and 3 mm) on drying rate and shrinkage percentage and rehydration capacity were investigated. It was concluded that infrared radiation power amount has a significant effect on processing time and drying rate. With increasing radiation power, drying time is reduced and consequently drying rate is increased. The drying rate curve of potato slices at initial drying time is in the ascending phase because of surface moisture evaporation and... |

Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) enhanced drying of kiwi slices using multiple point-to-plate electrode arrangements under a DC voltage was carried out in an experiment to compare with those of oven drying at 60 ºC and ambient-air at 25 ºC. The EHD was run at high electric field of 375 V mm-1 using thirteen ionizing needles to a plate electrode. The effects compared included drying rate, temperature, energy consumption, color, and shrinkage. Samples dried by the EHD and oven showed nearly the same values of moisture content whereas that of the air-dried sample was 3.5 times higher at the end of a 7-hour drying. The sample subjected to EHD preserved the same temperature during the drying. Compared with oven drying, EHD’s energy consumption was negligible. EHD and... |

A multipurpose cabinet dryer was designed, constructed and tested using locally available materials. The system comprises a heating chamber, heat exchanger, drying trays, 3-phase blower, three heating elements of 1800 W each, and a control box, which consists of temperature control, contactor, thermocouple, and circuit breaker. The dryer was evaluated based on power consumed, moisture removal, drying rate, and drying efficiency. The result showed that the energy consumed when drying plantain chips, moringa leaves, okra, and locust beans are 346.55, 55.92, 110.63 and 49.64 kJ, respectively. The energy consumed increased with an increase in the moisture removed and drying time. Similarly, the drying rate for plantain chips, moringa leaves, okra, and locust... |

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate drying kinetics for natural and pulped coffee, using different temperatures and drying airflows. For the conduction of the experiment, coffee fruits (Coffea arabica L. cv. Topázio) were harvested manually, selecting only ripe fruits and subsequent to the hydraulic separation. For drying the coffee, use a mechanical dryer with two temperatures (40 and 45°C) and four drying air streams (24; 60; 96 and 132 m3.min-1.m-2). Twelve models for employees to describe the drying kinetics of coffees. Among the models used to describe the drying process of natural coffee and pulped coffee, according to the results of the coefficient of determination, relative mean error, standard deviation of estimates and distribution of waste... |

ABSTRACT Mechanical properties of agricultural products are essential for a proper project design or processing equipment dimensioning, as well as for establishment of parameters on the supported load. An experiment was set up in a completely randomized design, with five treatments (continuous and intermittent drying under 4, 8, 12, and 16 h of rest period) and four replications, to evaluate the effect of intermittent drying. Corn kernels of the cultivar Cargo TL were harvested with a moisture content of 25.37% wb and submitted to drying in an experimental fixed bed dryer set to a temperature of 100 °C and an airflow of 1.5 m3 min-1 m-2. Drying was performed until the kernels reached a moisture content of 14±0.3% wb. The process was interrupted in the... |

The physiological quality of seeds of native species is important to produce healthy saplings and therefore guarantee the success of programs to recover disturbed vegetation. This reinforces the necessity for investigating the physiological quality of those seeds. To evaluate the effects of different drying rates on the germination, moisture content and storability of Eugenia involucrata diaspores, mature fruits collected at Mogi Guaçu, SP, Brazil had their epi- and mesocarps removed by washing and were dried at 30, 40 or 50ºC until their water content was reduced from 57% (fresh diaspores) to 13% (final drying), totaling six drying levels. In a second experiment, diaspores had their moisture content reduced from 57% to 49%, at 30ºC, totaling six drying... |
