Response of Dalbergia miscolobium Benth. seedlings, a cerrado tree species, to mineral nutrient supply Rev. Bras. Bot.
Sassaki,Regina M.; Felippe,G.M..
(Response of Dalbergia miscolobium Benth. seedlings, a cerrado tree species, to a mineral nutrient supply). The soil under the Brazilian cerrado vegetation is very poor in nutrients. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the addition of a nutrient solution in the early growth of D. miscolobium, a typical cerrado tree species, cultivated in cerrado soil. Seeds were germinated in Petri dishes and seven-day old seedlings were transfered to pots containing cerrado soil. These were supplied once a week with a normal, 1/2 or 1/10 strength nutrient solution. Four growth analysis were done over a period of 145 days from seed imbibition, in terms of dry mass, leaf area and carbohydrate and nitrogen contents. Other derived parameters were also...

EARLY GROWTH AND SEEDLING MORPHOLOGY OF SPECIES OF Sesbania Scop. (Leguminosae, robinieae) Scientia Agricola
Veasey,Elisabeth Ann; Negrão,Marta Organo; Martins,Paulo Sodero; Bandel,Gerhard.
The objective of this study was to characterize 17 accessions of Sesbania, representing S. exasperata, S. grandiflora, S. sesban, S. tetraptera and S. virgata at the seedling stage, and to evaluate the initial development during the first two months after planting. The trial was conducted in a greenhouse in a randomized block design, with 4 replications and 5 plants per plot. The traits recorded were: plant height (PH), from four observations at 15-day intervals, at 17, 32, 47 and 62 days after planting; length of hypocotyl (LH) and epicotyl (LEP); length (LE1) and width (WE1) of the first eophyll; and number of leaflet pairs of the second metaphyll (NLP), evaluated 17 days after planting. Univariate analyses of variance were performed, estimating the...

The effects of salinity on growth and survival of mangrove seedlings changes with age Acta Botanica
Kodikara,Kodikara Arachchilage Sunanda; Jayatissa,Loku Pullukuttige; Huxham,Mark; Dahdouh-Guebas,Farid; Koedam,Nico.
ABSTRACT Six wide-ranging mangrove species, Rhizophora apiculata, R. mucronata, Avicennia marina, A. officinalis, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, and B. sexangula, were selected to study the growth and survival of seedlings under three contrasting salinity treatments over a 30-week period: low (3-5psu), moderate (15-17psu) and high (33-36psu). Seedlings grown under high salinity exhibited significantly lower performance (p<0.05) in survival rates, cumulative shoot height, mean growth rates, mean total leaf area, and mean dry weight, compared to those under low and moderate salinity regimes. The low salinity treatment provided the best conditions for initial establishment and growth of the seedlings of all species until 15-20 weeks of age. However, the same...
