Morphological variability of Bathybdella sawyeri (Hirudinida : Piscicolidae) from hydrothermal vents on the Galapagos Rift and the South East Pacific Rise ArchiMer

The deep-sea fish leech Bathybdella sawyeri Burreson has recently been collected from two sites on the South East Pacific Rise at approximately 14 degrees and 17 degrees S, 2623 - 2586 m depth. Leeches were obtained from washings of vent mussels Bathymodiolus thermophilus (Mytilidae) and clams Calyptogena magnifica (Vesicomyidae) collected with a grab by a submersible, or were found attached to the cheliped of the crab Cyanagraea praedator (Bythograeidae) collected in baited traps at 14 S. Most individual leeches had morphology typical of B. sawyeri as originally described, with suckers of approximately equal size, but all specimens collected from the crab C. praedator had unusually large oral suckers that were distinctly larger than the caudal sucker....

Community structure and temperature dynamics within a mussel assemblage on the Southern East Pacific Rise ArchiMer

The composition, biomass and diversity of the fauna in a Bathymodiolus thermophilus mussel assemblage colonizing diffuse flow areas on the SEPR is described and compared with biological characteristics of other hydrothermal assemblages. The spatio-temporal dynamics of temperatures over fine scales within the mussel habitat are characterized using newly-developed statistical approaches. Temperature data obtained from two adjacent habitats (a cirriped assemblage and a bare substratum) are compared. The results of the temperature data show that the mean temperature and the temperature variations were significantly higher in the mussel assemblage (mean temperature: 4.12 +/- 1.85 degrees C) in comparison with 2.40 +/- 0.14 degrees C in the cirriped assemblage...

Epifaunal community structure associated with Riftia pachyptila aggregations in chemically different hydrothermal vent habitats ArchiMer

The vestimentiferan tubeworm Riftia pachyptila (Polychaeta: Sibloglinidae) often dominates early succession stages and high productivity habitats at low-temperature hydrothermal vents on the East Pacific Rise. We collected 8 aggregations of R. pachyptila and the associated epifaunal community at 2 discrete sites of diffuse hydrothermal activity, in December 2001 and December 2002. Because of the high spatial and temporal variability of the biotic and abiotic factors related to hydrothermal vent activity, significant differences in the structure and the composition of the community were expected to occur at the scale of either 1 yr or 500 m distance between very different sites. A new species of scale-worm (Polychaeta : Polynoidae), Lepidonotopodium atalantae sp nov., from the East Pacific Rise at 13 degrees N and 9 degrees 50'N ArchiMer

A new species of scale-worm, Lepidonotopodium atalantae, belonging to the sub-family Lepidonotopodinae (Polychaeta: Polynoidae) has been found in samples collected on the deep-sea hydrothermal vent sites of 9 degrees N and 13 degrees N on the East Pacific Rise. It is mainly characterized by elytra, regularly ornamented on their posterior border, and very long anal cirri. This is the fifth species of Lepidonotopodium, all belonging to the deep-sea hydrothermal vent fauna.

Nematode communities associated with tubeworm and mussel aggregations on the East Pacific Rise ArchiMer

The meiobenthic nematode community of three different vent sites at the East Pacific Rise was studied in order to determine whether the abundance, species richness, diversity and trophic structure were similar. The sites Tica and Riftia Field were dominated by the tubeworm, Riftia pachyptila, and the Buckfield site was dominated by the mussel Bathymodiolus thermophilus. The nematode communities of all three sites were low in abundance (< 1 up to 46 ind. 10 cm(-2)), except one sample from Tica with almost 1000 ind. 10 cm(-2). Spatial and temporal variations in food web structure from newly-opened habitat at hydrothermal vents ArchiMer

To highlight the spatio-temporal variability of the food web structure of hydrothermal vent fauna from newly-opened habitat, a series of Titanium Ring for Alvinellid Colonization devices (TRACs) was deployed at TICA site on the East Pacific Rise in 2006. This experiment was conducted for periods of 4 days, 13 days and one month and deployments were aligned along a gradient from the basaltic bottom to the vent openings. delta C-13 values of colonists revealed a narrower range of carbon sources in proximity to vent openings in Alvinella pompejana habitat than in Tevnia jerichonana habitat, separated by a distance of four meters. Tubeworm-associated permanent meiobenthic communities from two chemically different hydrothermal vent sites on the East Pacific Rise ArchiMer

The permanent meiobenthic community associated with aggregations of the tubeworm Riftia pachyptila was characterized at 2 different hydrothermal vent sites, Tica and Riftia Field, on the East Pacific Rise near 9 degrees 50'N. The maximum effluent temperatures were similar at both sites, but the chemistry of the hydrothermal fluids differed between sites. The abundance of meiobenthos was very low in 5 out of 6 samples (<61 ind. 10 cm(-2)) and was higher at Tica (20 to 976 ind. 10 cm(-2)) than at Riftia Field (< 1 to 12 ind. 10 cm(-2)). Detailed Analysis of Near Tectonic Features Along the East Pacific Rise at 16 degrees N, Near the Mathematician Hot Spot ArchiMer

Spreading processes at the axes of fast spreading ridges are mainly controlled by magmatic activity, whereas tectonic activity dominates further away from the axis. High-resolution near-bottom bathymetry data, photographs, videos, and human observations from submersible surveys are used to develop a detailed tectonic analysis of the 16 degrees N segment of the East Pacific Rise (EPR). These data are used to evaluate how a highly magmatic segment, close to a hot spot, affects the nucleation and evolution of faulting patterns and impacts the evaluation of tectonic strain within 2km of the spreading axis. Benthic copepod communities associated with tubeworm and mussel aggregations on the East Pacific Rise ArchiMer

Variability in the structure of the meiobenthic copepod communities was studied among three vent sites on the East Pacific Rise. One of the sites was dominated by the mussel Bathymodiolus thermophilus, and the other two of the sites were dominated by the tubeworm Riftia pachyptila. In addition to the differences in the dominant megafauna, the maximum temperatures were much lower at the mussel-dominated sites, and the temperature to sulfide ratio was different between the tubeworm-dominated sites.
