Economic analysis of the intercropping of lettuce and tomato in different seasons under protected cultivation Horticultura Brasileira
Cecílio Filho,Arthur Bernardes; Rezende,Bráulio Luciano A; Costa,Caciana C.
Lettuce and tomato are vegetables that can be grown in protected cultivation, under given conditions. Considering their expensive production systems, intercropping might be an excellent alternative to optimize costs. Four experiments were carried out at the São Paulo State University (UNESP), at Jaboticabal, Brazil, to study the economic viability of intercropping lettuce and tomato under protected cultivation. To set the intercropping, lettuce was transplanted 0, 10, 20, and 30 days after transplanting (DAT) tomato and vice-versa, in two seasons, namely April to September 2003 and January to June 2004, when monocultures of both vegetables were also carried out. At the first planting season, operational profits (OP) in intercropping (lettuce transplanted...

A review of potential economic mineral resources in offshore Nigeria OceanDocs
Ibe, A.C..
Previously published data and preliminary indications from research now in progress suggest the possible occurrence in offshore Nigeria of economically viable deposits of placer minerals (including heavy minerals), sand and gravel, phosphorite, glauconite, polymetalic manganese nodules etc. In addition, new stratigraphic evidence indicates the existence of potentially rich petroleum plays associated with a Tertiary canyon system in water depths beyond the limits of present exploitation. Based on the comparative geology of similar occurrences in better explored continental margins and ocean basins elsewhere, the possible origin, abundance and distribution of these resources are adduced. A brief assessment of the technology relevant to their discovery and...

Dietary supplementation with glutamine or glutamic acid for weanling piglets PAB
Amorim,Alessandro Borges; Saleh,Mayra Anton Dib; Miassi,Gabriela de Mello; Berto,Dirlei Antonio.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of dietary glutamine and glutamic acid supplementation on carbon turnover (δ13C) in the muscles of piglets, on animal performance, and on feed economic feasibility. The diets consisted of: control (C), 1% glutamine (G), and 1% glutamic acid (GA). In experiment I, 111 piglets were used to assess carbon turnover in the Masseter, Psoas major, and Abdominal internal oblique muscles in terms of their isotopic composition and 13C substitution over time. In experiment II, 72 piglets were assigned randomly to blocks (eight replicates per treatment and three animals per experimental unit), in order to evaluate animal performance and feed economic feasibility. The GA diet promoted the best 13C...

The Economic Impacts of Bioenergy Crop Production on U.S. Crop Production AgEcon
Torre Ugarte, Daniel de la; Walsh, Marie E.; Shapouri, Hosein; Slinsky, Stephen P..
In response to energy security concerns, alternative energy programs such as biomass energy systems are being developed to provide energy in the 21st century. For the biomass industry to expand, a variety of feedstocks will need to be utilized. Large scale production of bioenergy crops could have significant impacts on the United States agricultural sector in terms of quantities, prices and production location of traditional crops as well as farm income. Though a number of scenarios were examined to study the impact of bioenergy crop production on the agricultural sector, two cropland scenarios are presented in this report. Under the wildlife management scenario, the analysis indicates that, at $30/dry ton (dt) for switchgrass,...

Economic Feasibility of Kenaf Production in Three Tennessee Counties AgEcon
Bazen, Ernest F.; Roberts, Roland K.; English, Burton C..
Since the 1940s, kenaf has been viewed as a potential source of fiber, mainly for newsprint and high quality paper. Kenaf research has once again risen to the forefront due to the recent USDA tobacco buyout. Many states and farmers dependent upon tobacco revenues have been seeking alternative crops for a number of years. This study seeks to expand the current literature by examining the economic feasibility of growing kenaf within three counties in Tennessee. Nitrogen meta-yield response functions for kenaf and four traditional crops were developed for 30 soils through crop growth simulation modeling and used to compare optimal crop budgets for each soil. Results reveal that kenaf would not compete favorably with traditional crops on any soil at prices...

ECONOMIC FEASIBILITY OF BIODIESEL PRODUCTION IN NORTH DAKOTA AgEcon
Vanwechel, Tamara; Gustafson, Cole R.; Leistritz, F. Larry.
The U. S. biodiesel industry is rapidly expanding due to energy production concerns, environmental concerns, and recent legislation. The most common type of biodiesel in the United States is derived from soybean oil. Soybeans are a major crop in North Dakota and could easily supply a 5 million gallon per year biodiesel facility. Potential market segments of a biodiesel facility in North Dakota include agriculture, construction, and state fleet sectors based on current diesel use. However, with existing technology and no subsidy, biodiesel operation and investment costs for a North Dakota facility are not competitive with petroleum diesel. Using soybean oil prices of 17 cents to 25 cents per pound, the per gallon cost of producing diesel in...

THE FEASIBILITY OF WETLAND RESTORATION TO REDUCE FLOODING IN THE RED RIVER VALLEY: A CASE STUDY OF THE MAPLE RIVER WATERSHED, NORTH DAKOTA AgEcon
Shultz, Steven D.; Leitch, Jay A..
The economic feasibility of alternative wetland restoration activities to store water and reduce flood damage was evaluated in the Maple River Watershed, North Dakota, a sub-watershed of the Red River of the North Watershed. The evaluation was based on recent hydrologic modeling and wetland restoration studies, the National Wetland Inventory, local land rental values, and site-specific historical flood damage. With benefit-cost ratios ranging from 0.08 to 0.13, neither simple wetland restoration based on plugging existing drains, nor restoration with outlet control devices, nor complete restoration intended to provide a full range of wetland-based environmental services were economically feasible over a 20-year future period. Peak flood stages and flood...

Economic feasibility of converting cow manure to electricity: A case study of the CVPS Cow Power program in Vermont AgEcon
Wang, Qingbin; Thompson, Ethan; Parsons, Robert L.; Rogers, Glenn.
A case study of the Central Vermont Public Service Corporation (CVPS) Cow Power program examines the economic feasibility for dairy farms to convert cow manure into electricity via anaerobic methane digestion. The study confirms that it is technically feasible to convert cow manure to electricity on dairy farms but the economic returns highly depend on the base electricity price paid by CVPS, premium rate paid by CVPS customers, financial supports from government agencies and other organizations, and sales of the by-products of methane generation. Lessons learned from this program will be useful to other dairy farms and communities interested in converting cow manure into electricity.

Economics of Alternative Crop Production in Arid Regions AgEcon
Curtis, Kynda R.; Bishop, Carol; Harris, Thomas R..
As water resources in arid regions decline, agricultural producers are encouraged to adopt water conserving strategies. The implementation of alternative low-water use crops is one option, but is it economically feasible? Data on current and alternative crops for this study include enterprise budgets, producer interviews, and field trials in Northwestern Nevada, USA. We use WinEPIC, a Windows-based version of the EPIC model, which synthesizes both agronomics and economics, to model yields and returns of alternative crop production under differing irrigation levels. Risk analysis or the distribution of net returns to alternative crop production is also examined. This study determined that there are alternative crops that could be feasibly substituted for...

The Variable-Rate Input Application Decision for Multiple Inputs with Interactions AgEcon
Roberts, Roland K.; English, Burton C.; Larson, James A..
Research has evaluated the relative profitability of variable-rate (VRT) versus uniform-rate (URT) application of a single input in fields with multiple management zones. This study addresses map-based VRT decisions for multiple inputs in fields with multiple management zones. The decision-making framework is illustrated for nitrogen and water applied to irrigated cotton in fields with three management zones. Results suggest traditional methods of determining VRT application of a single input may by suboptimal if interactions exist among VRT inputs and URT inputs. Implications are that a systems approach to multiple-input VRT decisions can produce increased net returns to VRT.

Economic Feasibility of Sustainable High Oilseed-Based Biofuel Production: The Case for Biodiesel in North Carolina AgEcon
Yeboah, Anthony K.; Naanwaab, Cephas B.; Yeboah, Osei-Agyeman; Owens, John Paul; Bynum, Jarvetta S..
We assess the economic feasibility of a 10 MMGY biodiesel plant using a Monte Carlo Cash Flow model programmed in Excel using @Risk, a simulation and risk analysis software. The model incorporates stochastic components to capture uncertainty in the analysis. The stochastic components are mainly variables that may exhibit risk, such as input prices, output prices, and expected revenues, and these are assigned probability distributions in the model. The model is programmed with three output variables: stream of revenues, profits/loss, and the resulting net present value (NPV) over ten year forecast period. Results from the cash flow analysis show that average expected revenues from the sale of biodiesel and co-products will be $48.5 million and total...
