The polyphyletic origin of endoparasitism in the cyclostome lineages of Braconidae (Hymenoptera): a reassessment 16
Quicke, D.L.J..
A recent phylogenetic analysis of selected groups of cyclostome braconid wasps by Whitfield (1992) was used to investigate the evolution of biological characters associated with the transition from ecto- to endoparasitism. Incorrect methodology in character polarization and incorrect scoring of characters, and a failure to include other available data are shown by reanalysis of a corrected data matrix to compromise Whitfield's conclusion that endoparasitism evolved twice in his selected set of taxa. Greater rigor and the use of additional informative characters are advocated to obtain more robust phylogeny upon which conclusions regarding biological evolution can be more reliably based.

Host-parasite interactions between the piranha Pygocentrus nattereri (Characiformes: Characidae) and isopods and branchiurans (Crustacea) in the rio Araguaia basin, Brazil 83
Carvalho,Lucélia Nobre; Arruda,Rafael; Del-Claro,Kleber.
In the tropics, studies on the ecology of host-parasite interactions are incipient and generally related to taxonomic aspects. The main objective of the present work was to analyze ecological aspects and identify the metazoan fauna of ectoparasites that infest the piranha, Pygocentrus nattereri. In May 2002, field samples were collected in the rio Araguaia basin, State of Goiás (Brazil). A total of 252 individuals of P. nattereri were caught with fishhooks and 32.14% were infested with ectoparasite crustaceans. The recorded ectoparasites were branchiurans, Argulus sp. and Dolops carvalhoi and the isopods Braga patagonica, Anphira branchialis and Asotana sp. The prevalence and mean intensity of branchiurans (16.6% and 1.5, respectively) and isopods (15.5%...

Blood metabolites as predictors to evaluate the body condition of Neopelma pallescens (Passeriformes: Pipridae) in northeastern Brazil 103
Azeredo,Luane M.M.; Oliveira,Talita C.; Lopez,Luiz C.S..
ABSTRACT Body condition is an important ecological attribute that can provide a measure of the energy stored by an animal or population. Body condition is traditionally ascertained with morphometric body condition indices (BCIs), but some researchers have used various physiological and biochemical parameters as predictors of body condition. This study aimed to test reliable biochemical predictors of body condition in individuals of Neopelma pallescens (Lafresnaye, 1853), found in an Atlantic forest patch. For this purpose we examined the relationship between body condition and the concentrations of blood glucose and ketones. We also verified correlations between blood metabolite concentrations and ecological variables, including time of day, seasons,...

Patterns of parasitism by Eutrombicula alfreddugesi (Oudemans) (Acari, Trombiculidae) in three species of Tropidurus Wied (Squamata, Tropiduridae) from Cerrado habitat of Central Brazil 104
Carvalho,André L. G. de; Araújo,Alexandre F. B. de; Silva,Hélio R. da.
This study concerns the patterns of parasitism by the larvae of Eutrombicula alfreddugesi (Oudemans, 1910) on three species of Tropidurus Wied, 1820 from Cerrado habitats of Central Brazil: T. oreadicus Rodrigues, 1987 (n = 97), T. itambere (n = 85) and T. torquatus (Wied, 1820) (two samples n = 75, n = 23). The highest prevalence value was observed in T. itambere (88.2%), followed by T. oreadicus (87.6%), and T. torquatus (17.3% and 65.2%). The most important sites of infestation were the mite pockets and skin folds, especially on the neck and inguinal region. Tropidurus itambere Rodrigues, 1987 was the most heavily parasitized species (mean intensity of infestation: 36.67 ± 41.09), followed by T. oreadicus (15.38 ± 21.08), and T. torquatus from Unaí,...

Moscas ectoparasitas (Diptera, Hippoboscoidea) de morcegos (Mammalia, Chiroptera) do Estado do Paraná. II. Streblidae: chave pictórica para gêneros e espécies 104
Graciolli,Gustavo; Carvalho,Claudio José Barros de.
A survey of batflies (Diptera, Streblidae) was done in Paraná State, Brazil during 1998 and 1999. Twenty-tree species in 10 genera were recorded. Two species of streblid batflies, Paraeuctenodes longipes Pessôa & Guimarães, 1936 and Metelasmus pseudopterus Coquillett, 1907, that have not been found in Paraná State were included, because they have been recorded in Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo States. One species is new a record for Brazil: Trichobius jubatus Wenzel, 1976. In addition, twenty more species are new records for Paraná State: Trichobius joblingi Wenzel, 1966; T. tiptoni Wenzel, 1976; T. furmani Wenzel, 1966; T. longipes (Rudow, 1871); Paratrichobius longicrus (Ribeiro, 1907); Megistopada aranea (Coquillett, 1899); M. proxima (Séguy,...

Marine leech, Stibarobdella macrothela (Schmarda, 1861) (Hirudinea, piscicolidae), parasitic on the whaler shark, Carcharhinus Brachyurus (Günther, 1870) (Chondrichthyes, Carcharhinidae), in Southern Brazilian waters 57
SOTO,J. M. R..
The presence of the sea leech, Stibarobdella macrothela (Schmarda, 1861) (Hirudinea, Piscicolidae), is marked in the south coast of Brazil, based on the single specimen with 67 mm (CT), collected in the intergill ventral region of a whaler shark, Carcharhinus brachyurus (Günther, 1870) (Chondrichtyes, Carcharhinidae), adult male with about 2 m (CT), being treated of the first registrations of S. macrothela in the Southwest Atlantic and the parasitic association with C. brachyurus.
