A comparative efficiency analysis of wheat farms using parametric and nonparametric methods AgEcon

This study examined whether the efficiency measures were invariant to choice of parametric and nonparametric methods for a sample of 183 wheat farms. The efficiency measures from the deterministic parametric method were smaller than those from the deterministic method. There was a trade-off between scale efficiency and economic efficiency. In the deterministic nonparametric method, the economic efficiency, scale efficiency and overall efficiency results were invariant to the number of inputs or the dimensionality. Only allocative and pure technical efficiency measures depended on the dimensionality. This work illustrated the importance of holding curvature for the cost function in stochastic frontier results.

Estimation of the Economic Efficiency of Cashew Nut Production in Benin AgEcon

This study contributes to the debate regarding the competitiveness of developing countries in the context of globalization. To take advantage of this trend, developing countries will have to position themselves properly through new policies and efficiency in production. In Benin, new orientation of agricultural policy concerns the diversification of exported products. Therefore, and due to the decrease of international price of cotton which represents the main exported crop, cashew nut, the second exported crop by Benin, becomes more interesting for government policy. Does heterogeneity in goals and preferences affect allocative and technical efficiency? A case study in Northern Nigeria AgEcon

Household characteristics are commonly used to explain variation in smallholder efficiency levels. The underlying assumption is that differences in intended behavior are well described by such variables, while there is no a priori reason that this is the case. Moreover, heterogeneity in farmer goals and preferences, in relation to the role of the farm enterprise, are not well documented in developing countries. This paper makes a contribution to fill this gap, by empirically determining heterogeneity in farmer goals and attitudes in Nigeria through a pair-wise ranking, supplemented with Likert scales. There is a high potential for simultaneously increasing sustainability of the earth system and economic development by removing inefficiencies currently present both at the production input and output side. In this paper a static view on sustainability is employed, by introducing capacity constraints as the boundaries above (or below) which the system cannot maintain its stable state. Currently these capacity constraints are often not respected. In this paper it is shown how the efficiency improvement pathway of an industry and the firms within it can be calculated to come to a sustainable, profit maximizing state, given the existence of these capacity constraints.

A RELATIVE EFFICIENCY ANALYSIS OF FARMLAND PRESERVATION PROGRAMS AgEcon

Using an inverted Farrell methodology, we analyze the relative efficiency of five agricultural land preservation programs in three counties of Maryland in achieving the stated goals of maximum acreage, threatened parcels, and productive farms. Regression analysis is then used to compare the programs both within and between counties.

ESTIMATING NON-CONCAVE METAFRONTIERS USING DATA ENVELOPE ANALYSIS AgEcon

In this article we propose non-concave metafrontiers for estimating the inefficiency among production functions which do not necessarily belong to the same technology. In this case, estimating a joint production by literature approaches might be inappropriate. We call this inefficiency technological inefficiency and suggest Data Envelopment Analysis to construct a metafrontier production function which consists only of parts of different (group) frontier production functions. Thus, in contrast to the common literature our metafrontier does not need any assumptions additional to the group production functions.
