The dispersal of nitrogen-fixing Enterobacteriaceae from sewage into the waters and sediments of Morecambe Bay, UK. ArchiMer
Jones, K; Betaieb, M.
The sediments of Morecambe Bay contain large numbers of salinity-tolerant, nitrogen-fixing Enterobacteriaceae (NFEs) mainly Klebsiella pneumoniae ) which appear to be derived from sewage. Sewage effluents, regardless as to whether they have received primary or secondary treatment, contain huge numbers of NFEs with salinity-tolerant and freshwater strains present in roughly equal quantities. The bacteria are discharged into the rivers and estuaries and carried out to sea. Once in the sea the salinity-tolerant strains retain their viability better than the freshwater strains so that the incoming tide, which doses the sediments, contains mainly salinity-tolerant NFEs. It is probable that similar processes occur all round the U.K. coast, as inshore coastal...

Development of a real-time PCR method coupled with a selective pre-enrichment step for quantification of Morganella morganii and Morganella psychrotolerans in fish products ArchiMer
Podeur, Gaetan; Dalgaard, Paw; Leroi, Francoise; Prevost, Herve; Ernborg, Jette; Martinussen, Jan; Hansen, Lars Hestbjerg; Filet, Marie-france.
Histamine fish poisoning is common and due to toxic concentrations of histamine often produced by Gram-negative bacteria in fin-fish products with a high content of the free amino acid histidine. The genus Morganella includes two species previously reported to cause incidents of histamine fish poisoning. Morganella morganii and Morganella psychrotolerans are both strong producer of histamine. However, little is known about the occurrence and critical stages for fish contamination with these bacteria. To elucidate contamination routes of Morganella, specific real-time quantitative PCR (RTi qPCR) methods for quantification of M. morganii and M. psychrotolerans have been developed. Selective primers amplified a 110 bp region of the vasD gene for M....

Isolation and characterization of cultivable fermentative bacteria from the intestine of two edible snails, Helixpomatia and Cornu aspersum (Gastropoda: Pulmonata) Biol. Res.
CHARRIER,MAR YVONNE; FONTY,GERARD; GAILLARD-MARTINIE,BRIGITTE; AINOUCHE,KADER; ANDANT,GERARD.
The intestinal microbiota of the edible snails Cornu aspersum fSyn: H. aspersa), and Helix pomatia were investigated by culture-based methods, 16S rRNA sequence analyses and phenotypic characterisations. The study was carried out on aestivating snails and two populations of H. pomatia were considered. The cultivable bacteria dominated in the distal part of the intestine, with up to 5.10(9) CFU g -1, but the Swedish H. pomatia appeared significantly less colonised, suggesting a higher sensitivity of its microbiota to climatic change. All the strains, but one, shared ≥ 97% sequence identity with reference strains. They were arranged into two taxa: the Gamma Proteobacteria with Buttiauxella, Citrobacter, Enterobacter, Kluyvera, Obesumbacterium,...

Production of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) by enterobacteria is an important resistance mechanism against antimicrobial beta-lactamics. We tested 498 bacterial strains isolated from two tertiary-care teaching hospitals for ESBL production, using screening breakpoints for aztreonam and third generation cephalosporins, according to CLSI recommendations. Among these isolates, 155 were positive for the ESBL screening test, and 121 (78%) were confirmed by the clavulanic acid combination disk method. We found a high frequency of ESBL (24%) among Enterobacteriaceae, with a frequency of 57.4% for Klebsiella pneumoniae, 21.4% for Klebsiella oxytoca, and 7.2% for E. coli. In other members of Enterobacteriaceae, non-Klebsiella and non-E. coli, the...

Abstract Colistin resistance involving Gram-negative bacilli infections is a challenge for health institutions around of the world. Carbapenem-resistance among these isolates makes colistin the last therapeutic option for this treatment. Colistin resistance among Enterobacteriaceae, Acinetobacter spp., and Pseudomonas spp. was evaluated between 2010 and 2014 years, at Hospital das Clínicas, São Paulo, Brazil. Over five years 1346 (4.0%) colistin resistant Gram-negative bacilli were evaluated. Enterobacteriaceae was the most frequent (86.1%) pathogen isolated, followed by Acinetobacter spp. (7.6%), and Pseudomonas spp. (6.3%). By temporal analysis there was a trend for an increase of colistin resistance among Enterobacteriaceae, but not among...
