Pressures on the Nigerian Coastal Zone: Its Environmental need for Sustainable Resources 20
Umana, U.A..
A coastal zone contains a range of natural envionments that man uses in different ways to provide a variety of goods and services. Some of these goods (e.g. oil and gas, fish and mangrove wood) and services (e.g. recreational values of beautiful beaches) are tangible and marketable. Other such as nutrient flows, waste reception and stabilization functions are less tangible.

The coastal zone and oceanic problems of Sub-Saharan Africa 20
Ibe, A.C..
The coastal zone and oceans surrounding Sub-Saharan Africa, with their vast resources of food, energy, and minerals, not only are composed of various fragile ecosystems, but are scenes of a variety of often conflicting uses. At present, the uncontrolled development of the coastal zone and ocean and the almost haphazard exploitation of their natural resources threaten to turn the promise of economic prosperity into an environmental nightmare that portends great dangers for present and future generations. There is the urgent need to put in place national management policies that address the environmental controls and procedures to be applied in pursuit of economic development. However, the oceans have no physical boundaries corresponding to national...

The role of wetlands in lake ecological functions and sustainable livelihoods in lake environment: A case study on cross border Lake Jipe - Kenya/Tanzania 20
Ndetei, Robert.
Wetlands are highly productive ecosystems. Their values and functions support other ecosystems and are significant to economic development. They once covered large areas of the world and are now among the rarest and most at-risk ecosystems. They are highly valued for their recreational, educational, scientific, aesthetic, spiritual and cultural values; and form an important component of lakes that provide critical functions influencing lake ecological functions. Despite the important roles in sustaining vibrant lake ecology, supporting economic development and elevating poverty, almost all wetlands in the world are threatened by diverse human induced factors. Lake Jipe striding across the Kenya-Tanzania international boundary is an important ecosystem to...

Environmental Design and Analysis in Marine Environmental Sampling 20
Underwood, A.J..
The IOC-IMO-UNEP/GIPME Groups of Experts on Effects of Pollution (GEEP) has been working for a number of years on promoting new ways of understanding how pollutants affect marine biological systems. A major initial focus of GEEP was on calibration workshops where different methods were tested against one another. The Oslo (1986), Bermuda (1988) and Bremerhaven (1992) workshop publications are widely regarded as benchmarks demonstrating that biological effects methods are reliable tools for measurement of the effects of pollutants discharged to the marine environment. IOC through GEEP, in cooperation with UNEP, has published a series of manuals based on the successful techniques and these are listed at the back of this volume. Monitoring programmes for...

Cambio climático, sustentabilidad y gobernanza 20
Piñeiro, R.; Areces, J. A.; Salinas, E..

Piñeiro, R.; Puga, R.; González-Sansón, G..
Social-economical activities in the western area of the Batabanó gulf, southern coast of Pinar del Río are analized. The communities do not have a compression of the environmental on the resource, as well as the fragility of the coastal ecosystems. Between the negative effects over the environmental are the indiscriminate cutting, the pollution, all of them due to the ignorance of the mangove forests benefits. The economic activities are industrialists and agriculturists where the spiny lobster fishery (P. argus) is the most important. A decrease of the level of captures from 1990 to 2003, was observed. This behavior reflects the deteriorate conditions of the environment, which limit the recruitment and affect some nursery areas, as well as the...

Análisis espacio-temporal de la contracorriente cubana de septiembre de 1999 a junio de 2001 20
Simanca, J.; Ramírez, O.; Fernández, L.; Arriaza, L.; Rodas, L.; Esponda, S.; García, R.; Alburquerque, O.; García, I..

The eastern Africa flamingo Lakes: Building partnerships for sustainable resource management 20
Raini, Jackson A..
The saline alkaline lakes of the Eastern Africa Rift Valley 'Flamingo Lakes' support diverse biological resources that are of global, regional, national and local importance. These lakes form the center piece of some of the world renowned national parks and conservation areas and are major feeding, staging and displaying ground for the region's Lesser flamingo (Phoeniconaias minor), Greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) and for over 70 species of water birds. Unsustainable land use practices within the basins of these lakes during the last four decades have adversely affected the environment in many ways. Notable among the effects are the diminishing forested areas, rampant soil erosion, waste disposal problems and deterioration in catchment water...
