Environmental effects on reproductive performance of Nellore cows widely raised in the Cerrado/Pantanal ecotone Animal Sciences
Oliveira, Nicacia Monteiro de; Rezende, Marcos Paulo Gonçalves de; Abreu, Urbano Gomes Pinto; Rosa, Antonio do Nascimento; Sterza, Fabiana de Andrade Melo; Fialho, André Luiz Leão.
We analyzed the pregnancy rate (PR) and birth rate (BR) of Nellore cows raised extensively in the Cerrado/Pantanal during 4 mating seasons (2009–2012), assessing the relationship with the temperature and humidity index (THI) and the effect of the year and breeding season. We used information from 2,116 cows, which were categorized as either multiparous (n = 1430), primiparous (n = 338), or nulliparous (n = 348). In the months of the breeding season (December–February), temperature and relative humidity data were collected to calculate the temperature and humidity index (THI). An ANOVA was performed with a model that included sources of variation from the fixed effects of category of cow and year on PR and BR; and a linear regression analysis and...

Influence of environmental variability and age on the body condition of small pelagic fish in the Gulf of Lions ArchiMer
Brosset, Pablo; Menard, Frederic; Fromentin, Jean-marc; Bonhommeau, Sylvain; Ulses, Caroline; Bourdeix, Jean-herve; Bigot, Jean-louis; Van Beveren, Elisabeth; Roos, David; Saraux, Claire.
Endogenous and environmental variables are fundamental in explaining variations in fish condition. Based on more than 20 yr of fish weight and length data, relative condition indices were computed for anchovy and sardine caught in the Gulf of Lions. Classification and regression trees (CART) were used to identify endogenous factors affecting fish condition, and to group years of similar condition. Both species showed a similar annual cycle with condition being minimal in February and maximal in July. CART identified 3 groups of years where the fish populations generally showed poor, average and good condition and within which condition differed between age classes but not according to sex. In particular, during the period of poor condition (mostly recent...

Effects of density dependence, zooplankton and temperature on blue whiting Micromesistius poutassou growth ArchiMer
Trenkel, Verena; Lorance, Pascal; Fassler, S. M. M.; Hoines, A. S..
Blue whiting Micromesistius poutassou mean total length at age in the north-east Atlantic Ocean was found to vary by around ±6% during the period 2004–2011 and mean mass at age by ±22% during the years 1981–2013. Linear modelling provided strong evidence that these phenotypic growth variations can be explained by trophic conditions, mainly negative density dependence and also food availability, and a negative long-term temperature effect on asymptotic siz

Morphological Trends of Four Manila Clam Populations (Venerupis philippinarum) on the French Atlantic Coast: Identified Spatial Patterns and Their Relationship to Environmental Variability ArchiMer
Caill-milly, Nathalie; Bru, Noelle; Barranger, Melanie; Gallon, Laurent; D'Amico, Franck.
For species' dynamics highly influenced by environmental conditions, sustainable management for conservation and/or exploitation purposes requires the ability to segregate natural processes from anthropogenic impacts. In this context, identification of phenotypic variations in morphological patterns, and clarification of the mechanisms involved, constitute useful tools to identify adequate management measures from Europe-wide to local conditions. Although such approaches are already used effectively in the management of fish stocks, they are more recent for bivalve stocks, which are also good candidates for such management tools. The current study examines morphological patterns in the Manila clam (Venerupis philippinarum) through morphometric studies of 4...

Major changes in sardine growth and body condition in the Bay of Biscay between 2003 and 2016: Temporal trends and drivers ArchiMer
Veron, Matthieu; Duhamel, Erwan; Bertignac, Michel; Pawlowski, Lionel; Huret, Martin.
In the Bay of Biscay, mean body length and weight of sardines (Sardina pilchardus) have been decreasing since the early 2000s and could severely impact the fishing and seafood industry sector. These trends have no apparent link with fishing pressure, although the latter has been increasing since the late 2000s. As part of an effort to develop suitable assessment and management tools for this stock, we investigated the life-history traits of sardine and analyze its seasonal and inter-annual variations. Based on 14 years of morphometric data from both scientific surveys and professional samples, we analyzed the variability in sardine body condition and its responses to environmental changes. Generalized Additive Models revealed an age-sex specific decreasing...

Investigation of genetic and environmental factors for test day milk yields on each stage of lactation for holstein cattle in Hokkaido OAK

Productivity and quality of Formosa and Solo papaya over two harvest seasons PAB
Barros,Fabíola Lacerda de Souza; Kuhlcamp,Karin Tesch; Arantes,Sara Dousseau; Moreira,Sarah Ola.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the productivity and quality of papaya fruits (Carica papaya) of the Solo (12 genotypes) and Formosa (9 genotypes) heterotic groups over two harvest seasons. The experiment was conducted under field conditions in the municipality of Pinheiros, in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil, in a randomized complete block design. Ten morpho-agronomic and physicochemical variables of the fruits were measured in winter (210-300 days after planting) and summer (450-540 days after planting). The data were subjected to the combined analysis of variance, to the breakdown of the genotype x environment interactions, and to the grouping of means by the Scott-Knott test. Although harvest season affected the evaluated...

Activity of beta-glucosidase and levels of isoflavone glucosides in soybean cultivars affected by the environment PAB
CARRÃO-PANIZZI,MERCEDES CONCÓRDIA; BORDINGNON,JOSÉ RENATO.
The enzyme beta-glucosidase hydrolyses the isoflavone glucosides developing aglycones, which are compounds with anticancer effects, that are also related with the astringency observed in soybean flavor. Due to the importance of this enzyme, a study was carried out to determine beta-glucosidase activity in soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) cultivars with different contents of isoflavone glucosides (enzyme substrate). The enzyme activity was determined in 51 soybean cultivars sowed in Londrina (latitude 23ºS), in Paraná State, Brazil, and in the cultivar IAS 5 from soybean production regions of different Brazilian states. Among the cultivars, a range of variability of 176.1 to 96.3 units of enzyme activity (cultivars IAC-2 and Embrapa 2, respectively) was...
