Agricultural costs for reducing nitrogen surpluses in the Weser river basin AgEcon
Heidecke, Claudia; Kreins, Peter.
Agriculture is to a large part responsible for nitrate leaching into groundwater and rivers in Germany, especially in highly intensive agricultural regions. To evaluate the link between nitrogen surpluses from agriculture and nutrient leaching into ground- and surface waters, a model network to analyse current and future nitrogen surplus developments and water quality is set up by connecting hydrological and hydrogeological models with the German agricultural sector model RAUMIS. A set of different environmental measures and their costs is selected to fulfil surface and groundwater targets of the European water framework directive (WFD) for the case of the Weser River basin. Results show that with additional agri-environmental measures covering around 1...

Risk, Utility and the Value of Information in Farmer Decision Making AgEcon
Byerlee, Derek R.; Anderson, Jock R..
A model is developed from decision theory for evaluating probabilistic information, especially for decision makers who are risk averse. The value of information to such a decision maker is disaggregated into mean and variance effects. It is shown that the degree of risk aversion of the decision maker may have important effects on the value attached to the information; however, there is not necessarily a positive correlation between risk aversion and the value of information, since the decision to acquire new information is itself often a risky decision. The concepts and procedures are illustrated by application to a fodder conservation decision with rainfall forecast information.

Development, Diffusion and Impact of Conservation Farming in Zambia AgEcon
Haggblade, Steven; Tembo, Gelson.
The study reported in this paper measures differences in profitability between conservation farming (CF) practices and conventional agriculture by comparing the value of differential output with the differential input costs. The main objective is to address and fill several important knowledge gaps by investigating three key features of conservation farming in Zambia: 1) the process by which CF originated and spread; 2) the scale of CF adoption across household groups and regions; and 3) the impact of CF on crop output, input use, cost of production and farm income.

The global feed market: Asian perspectives AgEcon
Zhou, Zhang-Yue.
Global demand for feed, especially cereal feed, is expected to increase in the decades to come. At the global level, demand for cereal feed will be met by the supply. There are, however, disparities between regions. As a result of strong livestock industry development, the Asian region as a whole will have a shortage of cereal feed and will become a major cereal feed importer. This paper examines existing projections of feed demand and supply in the Asian region. It also sheds light on the implications of the feed demand and the livestock industry development in the Asian region for the Australian rural industries.

THE IMPORTANCE OF USING FARM LEVEL RISK ESTIMATES IN CRP ENROLLMENT DECISIONS AgEcon
Bechtel, Amos I.; Young, Douglas L..
Easily accessible county data produced frontiers which substantially underestimated the reduction in risk by enrolling in the CRP. Furthermore, the county yield data portrayed an unattainable level of utility for a moderately risk averse farmer. Farm level data predicted CRP enrollment similar to actual enrollment in the study region.

Irrigated Acreage Projections in Georgia AgEcon
Cai, Ruohong; Mullen, Jeffrey D.; Bergstrom, John C..
Irrigated acreage is an important indicator for agricultural water demand which is a major category of water use. Three methodologies were applied in this study to project irrigated acreage of major crops in Georgia from 2010 to 2050. These three methodologies show consistent results. Total irrigated acreage of major crops in Georgia is projected to increase for the next 40 years. The acreage projection results provide useful information for Georgia agricultural policy makers and farmers. However, the methodologies used in the study have some limitations. They can only be used under certain assumptions. Thus, better methodologies are needed for future related research.

MARKET IMPERFECTIONS AND CLASS STRUCTURE: THE CASE OF SOUTH AFRICA AgEcon
Lovo, Stefania.
Land and market imperfections shape the organization of agricultural production and lead to different production regimes within rural farm households in South Africa. This paper presents a theoretical model to explain the presence of three main households groups (classes) determined on the basis of the labor regime adopted: small peasants (working both on and off farm), self cultivators (autarkic in labor) and hiring in households. Membership in the three categories is determined by the endogenous shadow wage and the effective market wages. A generalized ordered logit model is used to test the main predictions of the model. Market imperfections, which prevent household from accessing markets, are expected to have different impacts on heterogenous...

EVOLUTION OF THE ECONOMIC RESULTS AND THE STRUCTURE OF FARMS: AN ANALYSIS THROUGH THE BOOK-KEEPING DATA IN CENTRAL AND NORTHERN ITALY AgEcon
Canavari, Maurizio; Ghelfi, Rino; Merlo, Maurizio; Rivaroli, Sergio; Sarti, Danio; Toffanin, Giovanna; Vanelli, Pietro.
The latest orientations of the CAP have had remarkable and wide-spread effects on the whole agri-food sector. It has deeply influenced the entrepreneurs' choices, with reference both to the production techniques and to the business organization. The changes have had inevitable reflexes on the economic results of the firms, thus determining adaptations regarding both the structure and the amount of inputs. In this paper, an analysis of the book-keeping results of agricultural enterprises of Northern and Central Italy is carried out. We try to underline and analyze the evolution of the economic results and the main structural and organizational elements in the firms. The accountancy data of a group of firms located in the Veneto, Emilia-Romagna and...

The economic value of releasing parasitoid for the control of maize stemborers in East and Southern Africa AgEcon
Kipkoech, Anderson Kipruto; Schulthess, Fritz; Yabann, Wilson K.; Maritim, Henry K.; Muchugu, Erick; Mithofer, Dagmar.
The braconid larval parasitoid Cotesia flavipes Cameron was introduced from Asia into East and Southern African region starting in 1993 to control the invasive exotic maize stemborer Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae). A quasi-experiment was constructed using farmers that applied sublethal dosages of pesticide in assessing the counterfactual for the impact of the establishment of the introduced parasitoid in five countries in the region. Logistic regression method was used to estimate the probability that farmers’ would inadvertently exclude parasitoids in their maize field. Thereafter the propensity score matching method was used to find corresponding farmers excluding parasitoids among those who did not for yield comparison. The...

The benefits to the Australian Pig meat industry from an increase in demand for a hypothetical low cholesterol pork product AgEcon
Slattery, Henry; Griffith, Garry R.; Malcolm, Bill; Dunshea, Frank.
This is the third of a series of papers examining the potential economic effects from the introduction of a hypothetical low cholesterol pork product into the Australian market. Here, a newly updated pig meat model reported by Griffith et al. (2010) is used to model the industry wide impacts of the Bellhouse et al. (2010) survey results on consumer willingness to pay for this new pork product. Six different scenarios are examined that are combinations of a 10, 20 or 30 per cent increase in consumer demand, with and without a 10 per cent increase in the costs of producing the more valuable pork. The simulation results for the various scenarios indicate total annual industry benefits of some $450m for an increase in aggregate willingness to pay of 30 per...

Az ökológiai gazdálkodás hatékonysági kérdései AgEcon
Alvincz, Jozsef; Koltai, Judit Petra.
Mindez...

Management of Dryland Sustainable Agriculture AgEcon
Shehrawat, Pardeep Singh; Singh, Sube.
The study was conducted in the Bhiwani district of Haryana state, which was selected purposively on the basis of maximum area under dryland agriculture. From the four blocks in the Bhiwani district 200 farmers (50 farmers from each block) were selected randomly. The concept of sustainable agriculture involves the evolution of a new type of agriculture rich in technology and information, with much less than intensive energy use and market purchased inputs. Thus, sustainability is the successful management of resources to satisfy the challenging human needs, while maintaining or enhancing the quality of environment and conserving natural resources. Keeping in view the ever-increasing population, development of dry land agriculture, the depletion of natural...

Relationships between Agricultural policies and Environmental Effects in Japan: An Environmental-Economic Integrated Model Approach AgEcon
Sasaki, Hiroki.
This study investigates the optimal agricultural land use allocation and nitrogen application to a representative Japanese farm. The site-specific nature of numerous agri-environmental issues necessitates analysis at a disaggregated level in order to capture the underlying heterogeneity of agricultural productivity and environmental sensitivity across different parcels of land. This study adopts an integrated approach—a decision-making economic model for representative farms is combined with a stylized site-specific biophysical model, which quantifies the impact of different policy instruments on agricultural production practices and on multiple environmental effects. This model estimates the government budget outlays and social welfare, which require...
