Credit Markets for Small Farms: Role for Institutional Innovations AgEcon
Pillarisetti, Satish; Mehrotra, Nirupam.
Indian agriculture is characterized by the predominance of smallholders. This paper seeks to examine the access of small holders to agriculture credit in the context of financial sector reforms in India in the nineties. It explores the role of institutional and non institutional agencies in extending agriculture credit to the smallholder and the ground realities as revealed by recent data sets. The nineties also saw the unfolding of the largest microfinance programme in the world in India. While this was very successful in bringing micro enterprises under the credit purview, it was unable to cater to the need for agriculture credit. This paper examines the reasons for this and suggests that newer kinds of institutional innovations in the Pilot stage like,...

FARM AND NONFARM FACTORS INFLUENCING FARM SIZE AgEcon
Atwood, Joseph A.; Helmers, Glenn A.; Shaik, Saleem.
The impact of the price of capital, nonfarm employment opportunities, and returns in agriculture on farm size was analyzed. A 10 region panel model using data for 1950-2000 was used. The impact of agricultural government payments was also examined. The results demonstrated the capital-labor substitution phenomenon and the importance of nonfarm employment changes.

Impact of Farm Size and Uncertainty on Technology Disadoption AgEcon
Gedikoglu, Haluk.
For policies that promote use of new technologies by farmers to be successful, it is important that farmers continue to use these technologies. Technology disadoption has not been analyzed in the literature widely and there is no theoretical model that analyzes technology disadoption. The objective of the current study is to provide a theoretical framework that explains the impact of farm size and uncertainty with respect to production technology on farmers’ decision to disadopt a new technology. Current study found that a negative relationship between farm size and disadoption technologies that were complement to other technologies that are used by larger farms. Also, the current study predicted that larger farmers are more likely to disadopt a new...

Aspects of the Definition and Classification of Farms AgEcon
Lund, Philip J..
This paper examines what, precisely, is meant by a 'farm' and considers various attributes of farms relevant to an assessment of the structure of European agriculture. A measure of average farm size is proposed to cope with the uncertain count of the population of farms. The issue of tenure may also be complex, with some farms consisting of separate parcels of land, each with different tenure situations. Finally, although many European farmers are often described as being 'part-time', there are a number of different criteria on the basis of which farmers, and also farms, may be classified as being part-time.
