Preparation of silica powder from rice husk CIGR Journal
Younesi Alamooti, Mohammad.
Silicon dioxide (SiO2) is the most abundant mineral in the world.  Plants are the source of this mineral.  In recent decades, with the advent of nanotechnology, silica nanoparticles have been found new applications in chemical industry, textile, packaging, biotechnology, agriculture and medicine.  Rice husk and straw are rich sources of minerals.  Rice husk (RH) has more than 20% silica.  Using thermal process in presence of different gasses, the sample of ash of husk and bran of rice produced.  To investigate the effect of heat treatment in different conditions, the properties of the samples were determined. Rice husk ash solution was poured on soda solution.  Then silica was separated and sodium silicate was formed.  By separation and titration of the...

Chisel Plough Shares Protection by Using Two Different Coating Techniques CIGR Journal
Hegazy, Rashad Aziz; El-Sheikha, Ahmed mohamed.
Hydrophobic coating with ceramic, as nanotechnology, is widely used to protect metal in different industries, but it has not yet tested with agricultural tools. Nickel chrome plating is defined and used process to protect metals too, but it has a common use. So, this work discusses the effect of two types of coating techniques on wear reduction on normal chisel plough shares. First coating technique was using nanotechnology inform of SI14-200 micron (0.2 mm) high density hydrophobic and ceramic coating. Second coating technique was using the galvanizing process by treating the shares with nickel chrome plating. Both techniques were applied for chisels’ shares made from medium carbon steel C-45. All treated shares were operated for 40, 80 and 120 hours to...

Research Investments and Market Structure in the Food Processing, Agricultural Input, and Biofuel Industries Worldwide AgEcon
Fuglie, Keith O.; Heisey, Paul W.; King, John L.; Day-Rubenstein, Kelly A.; Schimmelpfennig, David E.; Wang, Sun Ling.
Meeting growing global demand for food, fiber, and biofuel requires robust investment in agricultural research and development (R&D) from both public and private sectors. This study examines global R&D spending by private industry in seven agricultural input sectors, food manufacturing, and biofuel and describes the changing structure of these industries. In 2007 (the latest year for which comprehensive estimates are available), the private sector spent $19.7 billion on food and agricultural research (56 percent in food manufacturing and 44 percent in agricultural input sectors) and accounted for about half of total public and private spending on food and agricultural R&D in high-income countries. In R&D related to biofuel, annual...

Climate Change Impacts on Investment in Crop Sowing Machinery AgEcon
Kingwell, Ross S.; Farre, Imma.
Down-scaled global circulation modelling is combined with wheat growth simulation modelling to generate yield responses to times of sowing under current and projected climatic conditions for several locations in the grainbelt of Western Australia. A model for investment in crop sowing machinery draws on these simulated yield relationships at each location and is used to determine a farmer’s optimal investment in crop sowing work rate capacity under current and projected climate regimes. The key finding is that at most locations the projected change in climate has marked impacts on profit distributions from grain production, yet mostly modest changes in the farmer’s investment in machinery work rate form part of the profit-maximising response to climate...

Tractors on eBay and Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin: An Analysis on the Determinants of Price and Price Differences AgEcon
Kostandini, Genti; Mykerezi, Elton; Holland, Liz.
We investigate the determinants of price for tractor auctions on eBay and tractors that are listed in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin (FCMB) in Georgia. Surprisingly, seller reputation is not an important factor while engine hours and the presence of air conditioning appear to influence price on eBay auctions. On average prices for tractors that sold on eBay are not different than those on FCMB. The analysis also suggests that farmers may benefit from the use of online venues.

Conventional Tillage versus No-till: Characteristics of Producers and Farms AgEcon
Djido, Abdoulaye Ibrahim; Vitale, Jeffrey D.; Epplin, Francis M..
A survey of Oklahoma farmers was conducted to determine characteristics of farms across three tillage categories: conventional tillage exclusively; no-till exclusively; other (combination of systems). The seven percent that use no-till exclusively crop more acres, rent more acres, and use more crop rotations than farms that use conventional tillage exclusively.
