Composition and species richness of flagellate protozoa from environments associated to the Baía river (Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil): influence of the hydrological period and the connectivity - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v32i4.6307 Biological Sciences
Camargo, Janielly Carvalho; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Velho, Luiz Felipe Machado; Universidade Estadual de Maringá.
Despite flagellate protozoa are important for the metabolism of aquatic ecosystems, researches about the ecology of this community is scarce. Therefore, this study investigated the influence of flood regime and hydrological connectivity on the patterns of composition and species richness of protozoan flagellates from aquatic environments in the upper Paraná river floodplain. To this end, samplings were undertaken in two periods of the hydrological cycle (March 2008 and September 2008), at six lentic environments associated with the Baía river (three are connected to the river, and three are isolated). 120 taxa were identified in the studied area, distributed in 10 orders and one residual group. This high species richness was sustained by the order...

Herpetofauna do Parque Natural Municipal de Sertão, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil Biota Neotropica
Zanella,Noeli; Paula,Almir de; Guaragni,Samara Arsego; Machado,Leonardo de Souza.
The northern part of the state of Rio Grande do Sul was extensively deforested in recent decades, and only isolated fragments of the original vegetation remain. The Parque Natural Municipal de Sertão comprises a remnant of Atlantic Rain Forest, one of the largest fragments in northern Rio Grande do Sul. This study examined the diversity of the herpetofauna, focusing on environmental distribution, seasonality and species richness. We used complementary methods of sampling such as pitfall traps, active search and occasional encounters. We recorded 23 species of frogs, nine snakes and one lizard. With respect to the relationship between amphibians and reptiles and the structural and abiotic factors of the environment, the edge of the fragment showed higher...

Non-volant small mammals at an Atlantic forest area situated nearby a limestone quarry (Limeira quarry), state of São Paulo, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Leiner,Natália Oliveira; Silva,Wesley Rodrigues.
Our aim was to survey the non-flying small mammals inhabiting an Atlantic forest area situated nearby a limestone quarry (Limeira quarry), located at Ribeirão Grande municipality (SP), southeastern Brazil. Species were captured with pitfall and Sherman traps along eight pairs of 60 m transects distributed at four different distances from the quarry (60, 220, 740 and 1300 m). Between October 2005 and January 2008, 20 small mammal species (11 rodents and nine marsupials) were captured through 4080 pitfall trap-nights and 2040 Sherman trap-nights. The high values of richness, diversity (H' = 2.65) and equability (J = 0.88), and the presence of endemic and threatened species indicates a preserved study site and small mammal assemblage. Marmosops incanus,...

Bats of the Serra da Bocaina National Park, southeastern Brazil: an updated species list and a distribution extension for Trinycteris nicefori (Sanborn, 1949) Biota Neotropica
Delciellos,Ana Cláudia; Motta,Adarene; Dias,Daniela; Almeida,Brunna; Rocha-Barbosa,Oscar.
Abstract: The Serra da Bocaina National Park (SBNP) is a large remnant of Atlantic Forest located within an endangered biodiversity hotspot, which contributes to the connectivity among protected areas in the region. Despite the ecological importance of the SBNP, its bat fauna is poorly-known, and no comprehensive inventory is available. The present study provides an updated list of the bat species found in the SBNP. The four-year study was based on a capture-mark-recapture approach at four sites within the park, in the municipality of Paraty, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. A total of 22 bat species were recorded, representing two families, Phyllostomidae (n = 19 species) and Vespertillionidae (n = 3). This added 14 species to the known bat fauna of the...
