FEASIBILITY OF OPERATING A LAMB SLAUGHTER PLANT IN NORTH DAKOTA AgEcon
Nudell, Daniel J.; Petry, Timothy A..
A group of North Dakota lamb producers who are members of Valley Wool Growers Association identified several niche markets for high quality North Dakota lambs. The potential availability of a closed, but formerly federally inspected, livestock slaughter and meat processing facility in Steele County heightened their interest in determining the feasibility of a cooperatively owned lamb slaughter and processing facility. The cooperative would be patterned after existing and proposed slaughter cooperatives, whereby cooperative members would own shares to supply lambs to the plant on a year-round basis. The analysis was conducted in several sections corresponding to critical factors which affect feasibility of the plant. The critical factors analyzed included...

A Dynamic Risk Optimization Model for Evaluating Profitable and Feasible Water Management Plans AgEcon
Grove, Bennie; Oosthuizen, L.K.; Backeberg, G.R..
Currently the South African government is advocating the cultivation of high valued crops and more efficient use of available water resources through the adoption o f more efficient irrigation technology and irrigation scheduling. A requirement of the National Water Act (Act 36 of 1998) is the compilation of water management plans. The main objective of this paper is to develop a multiperiod mathematical risk programming model able of assisting water user associations with the compilation of water management plans that are both profitable and feasible. Special care was taken to represent canal capacities and irrigation system application rates in the model. Risk simulation procedures are used to generate an appropriately correlated inter- and...

Economic Analysis of Using Soybean Meal as a Mushroom Growing Substrate AgEcon
Fewell, Jason E.; Gustafson, Cole R..
Mushrooms have been grown commercially on many different substrates for years, usually agricultural by-products such as straw or stover. Increased popularity for specialty mushrooms with consumers has led to increased production and great demand for economic substrates. Oyster mushrooms are easier to grow relative to other types of mushrooms and their production has increased dramatically in recent years. This study examines the economic feasibility of using soybean hulls as a primary substrate for oyster mushrooms, replacing traditional wheat straw. The study uses a cost-benefit analysis to determine an optimal substrate based on yield and the number of crops harvested per year. The study shows that soybean hulls, combined with corn gluten or...

The energetic value as end product is among several benefits from effective waste management programs at intensive feedlots. It is increasing around the world since organic waste is a source of environmental pollution. The biogas can be obtained from simple to complex scale anaerobic digesters. Currently, there is in Mexico official instruments supporting clean technologies to promote the sustainable developing at regional levels. Based on Kyoto Protocol principles, Mexico has been promoting the emissions bonus to reduce the greenhouse gases such as methane from intensive feedlots. It is understood, that feedlots are a rich source of potential green energy. There are 58 000 milking cows in active production at Delicias, Chihuahua region, it is a potential...

ANÁLISIS DE FACTIBILIDAD PARA LA INTRODUCCIÓN DEL BIODIESEL EN ECUADOR AgEcon
Dominguez, Juan M.; Espinel, Ramon L..
Increases in petroleum prices have affected the prices of its derived products. In addition, the interest in issues related to the environment and energy security at world-wide level has been increased. All of these factors have contributed to the development of alternative fuel such as the ethanol, biodiesel and natural gas. This study analyzes the main agricultural products used to produce biodiesel, their production costs and the utilization of those inputs in other industries. This study will also include a brief summary of different legislations in those countries under analysis. On the other hand, we will find break-even points and apply a sensibility analysis associated with distinct scenarios in terms of input-output prices.

Avaliação do tipo de substrato e do período de armazenamento para a germinação de sementes de Cordia glabrata (Mart.) DC. - DOI: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v31i3.1013 Biological Sciences
Oliveira, Ademir Kleber Morbeck; UNIDERP; Alves, Felipe Fernandes; UNIDERP; Gadum, Juliana; UNIDERP.

An on-line advisor for sizing and economic analysis of anaerobic digestion plants CIGR Journal
Busato, Patrizia; Berruto, Remigio; Sopegno, Alessandro; Cornelissen, Renè.
A web-based service was deployed to appropriately size bio-gas plant capacity and perform its economic viability and return on investment based on biomass availability.  The tool is based on accepted biogas plant engineering design practice, incorporating the effects of incentives resulting from energy policies for member nations of the European Union participating in the Bioenergy Farm IEE and EU funded project.  The service provides a comprehensive database that allows consultants and farmers to analyze anaerobic digestion systems at different levels of granularity.  It also included multilingual support.  An adoption program was conducted to increase awareness on the availability of the service and ensure appropriate use and interpretation of its...
