Summer mortality of selected juvenile pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas under laboratory conditions and in comparison with field performance ArchiMer
Degremont, Lionel; Soletchnik, Patrick; Boudry, Pierre.
This study reports mortality under laboratory conditions in unselected controls and two lines of juvenile Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas, previously selected for their high or low survival in the field during the summer period. Oysters were also deployed in field conditions and mortality between both conditions was then compared. In the laboratory, mortality was observed in all experiments and it always lasted for a week indicating that mortality under laboratory conditions was a short-term event. It was also shown that mortality could be repeated for a batch in several experiments using oysters which never experienced any abnormal mortality. This approach could facilitate further studies to investigate the causes of mortality by allowing repeated...

Farm Management: rethinking directions? AgEcon
Kemp, David R.; Girdwood, John; Parton, Kevin A.; Charry, Al A..
Farms and farming are major contributors to the world economy, directly responsible for a large part of GDP. These achievements are not trivial and imply that farms are being managed in reasonably effective ways, else agricultural industries would not be sustained. However has the study of Farm Management within Australia made significant contributions to agriculture or lagged in the background. Is it contributing to better Farm Management or merely cataloguing what has happened? Is it leading or following? During recent years there has been an increasing interest in managing farms more sustainably, with emphasis on issues beyond short-term profitability to encompassing rural communities, ecosystems, biodiversity, ethics of technology and politics. The...

Predatory mirids (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Miridae) in tomato and tobacco in Cuba Rev. Protección Veg.
Martínez,María A.; Duarte,Leticia; Baños,Heyker L.; Rivas,Aramis; Sánchez,Adayakni.
In order to update the presence of species of mirid predators and their impact on solanaceous crops of interest, samples were taken from tomato and tobacco in open fields and from tomato in covered crops of selected locations of Mayabeque and Las Tunas Provinces every seven days. In each sampling, mirid specimens were counted and collected for their subsequent identification and determination of incidence. The results showed the presence of the species Nesidiocoris tenuis Reuter, Macrolophus praeclarus (Distant) and Cyrtopeltis = Engyatus varians (Distant). The mirids were present in most samples taken in tomato and tobacco, while the incidence remained over 40% in both crops.

Different tray cell volumes for lettuce grown in conventional and hydroponic system Ciência Rural
Ceccherini,Guilherme José; Lima,Tiago José Leme de; Sala,Fernando César.
ABSTRACT: Nowadays, an important economic movement is involved in the improvement of polyethylene trays for the production of seedlings, being developed with different volumes, numbers and cell formats in an each culture-specific manner. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the performance of curly lettuce originated from seedlings from trays with different volumes, through the comparison between conventional and hydroponic-NFT cultivation. Five volumes of trays (10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 cm³ of cell-1) were tested in conventional and hydroponic cultivation, from February to March 2016. For the purpose of comparison, the plants were evaluated through the characteristics of height, circumference, stem diameter, number of leaves, fresh shoot mass...
