Operational performance of the mechanized and semi-mechanized potato harvest REA
Cunha,João P. A. R. da; Martins,Daniel H.; Cunha,Walter G. da.
Potato is an important crop plant throughout the world. Harvesting is a fundamental step in its production system. Maybe, it is the most complex and expensive operation. Thus, the objective of this work was to compare the cost of the mechanized and semi-mechanized harvest, the operational capacity and the production losses during the potato harvest process. The work was accomplished in a commercial farming, cultivated under pivot system, in the municipal district of Perdizes - MG, Brazil. A completely randomized design with two treatments was used: mechanized and semi-mechanized harvest. The mechanized harvest used a self-propelled harvester. In the semi-automated harvest, a digger mounted on tractor was used and the potato was manually harvested. It was...

Estimating Cotton Harvest Cost per Acre When Harvest Days are Stochastic AgEcon
Farrell, Matthew; Ibendahl, Gregory A..
The cotton harvesting industry is in the beginnings of its next technological advance, cotton harvesters that form cotton modules inside the machine then deposit them off the rows. These new machines eliminate the need for extra labor and equipment, but are more expensive than conventional pickers. Increased field efficiency is also a benefit of the on-board module builders. The problem facing producers is determining the optimal number of acres to plan for harvest when trying to decide which harvester to purchase. This paper examines two objectives. First, determine the cost per acre of both conventional and on-board module harvester systems for different acreage levels assuming harvest hours per year are fixed. Second, make the harvest hours per season...

Development and evaluation of four-wheel tractor-attached multi-crop planter for mechanized seeding of maize in the Philippines CIGR Journal
PASCUAL, KRISTINE Samoy; Rafael, Marvelin L; Remocal, Alaissa T; Regalado, Manuel Jose C.
The use of a multi-crop planter (MCP) attached to a compact 4-wheel tractor (4WT) is still not yet fully explored in the Philippines, despite the popularity of 4WT for land preparation in maize areas. A 4WT-attached MCP was developed for row seeding of rice, maize, and mungbean. This study evaluates the MCP adaptive model for maize in a field experiment and on-farm trials at two farmers’ fields during dry season. The MCP with seed metering plate having seven 12-mm diameter holes and 3-mm thickness had a seeding rate of 18.9 kg/ha which is within the targeted design range (15–20 kg/ha), a field capacity of 0.14 ha/h and field efficiency at 78%  in well-tilled-clay soil under controlled condition. In farmer’s fields, the MCP delivered seeding rates within...
