As part of a survey of marine birds in the Southwest Atlantic, a field trip was made to Golfo San Matías, on the coast of southern Argentina, to accomplish a first evaluation of seabirds associated with the Argentine squid Illex argentinus fishery by jiggers. Between 7-21 July 2003, 20 species of seabirds belonging to 6 families were observed. On July 21, at 41°17'S, 64°36'W, a Trinidade Petrel (Pterodroma arminjoniana) was observed along with 100 Thalassarche melanophris, 200 Larus dominicanus, 10 Macronectes giganteus, 20 Oceanites oceanicus and 10 Procellaria aequinoctialis. We discuss some aspects of field identification, taxonomy and conservation. The data and circumstances of our record allows us to speculate that it is possible that vagrant birds,... |

Peritrichs attached to submerged macrophytes, filamentous chlorophytes and debries have been found in San Miguel del Monte pond (Buenos Aires province, Argentina) during the period March 1998- March 1999. Specimens were identified, illustrated and measured alive. Fourteen species of Subclass Peritrichia new for the country are described, illustrated and commented: Epistylis hentscheli, E. tubificis, E. vestita, Opercularia elongata, Cothurnia annulata, Cothurniopsis valvata, Pyxicola limbata, Thuricola innixa, Th. kellicotiana, Vaginicola attenuata, Vorticella picta, V. pulchella, V. rotunda and Zoothamnium ramosissimum |

The availability of Indian specimens of Plesionika persica (Kemp, 1925) and P. reflexa Chace, 1985 provided more information on the taxonomy around these two species. Moreover, it is the first record of P. persica to India. Although P. taiwanica Chan and Yu, 2000 is superficially rather similar to P. persica, there are many differences between them and probably it is inappropriate to establish a species group for these two species. It is likely that all previous records of P. ensis (A. Milne-Edwards, 1881) from India actually represent P. reflexa Chace, 1985. Nevertheless, the present Indian specimens of P. reflexa have more than 10% COI sequence divergence from the topotypic materials of both P. ensis and P. reflexa, and the epipods at the pereiopods III... |

During 2002, along the French coasts, three living specimens of Regalecus glesne are recorded, one of them at Cap Ferret, first record in the Bay of Biscay, two others in the Mediterranean sea between Marseille and Cassis. Among the trawl catches in the Bay of Biscay by N/O "Thalassa", we have observed two specimens of Chlorophthalmus agassizi, one of Callionymus reticulatus recorded for the first time along the Poitou-Charentes coasts, four of Mentodus rostratus and one of Photostylus pycnoptcrus. One species, fished in 1999 in the Bay of Biscay, determinated during 2001 according to two photographs, Aristostomias tittmanni, is recorded for the first time in the European Atlantic. Six other species, five fished with a pelagic trawl, Bathylagichthys greyae, Melanostomias bartonbeani, Macroparalepis affinis, Lobianchia gemellarii and Melanonus zugmayeri, one fished with a bottom trawl Ophidion barbatum, were recorded for the first time in tbe Bay of Biscay. The pelagic ichtyological fauna about -500 m, -1000m and -1500 m depth has changed between 1966 to 1968 and 2001 with a decrease of temperate cold affinities species, mostly Benthosema glaciale, and an increase of temperate warm affinities species, mostly Ceratoscopelus maderensis. |

The family Dactylopteridae comprises seven valid species mostly distributed in tropical and subtropical seas (Eschmeyer and Fong, 2013). The flying gurnard Dactylopterus volitans (Linnaeus, 1758) is present in the Eastern Atlantic, apparently from the North Sea to Angola, including the entire Mediterranean Sea and the Azores, and in the Western Atlantic, from Canada to Argentina (Froese and Pauly, 2013). It is the only species of the family Dactylopteridae present in the European Atlantic (from 36 degrees N to 66 degrees N) (Roux, 1986; Quero et al., 2003). The point map of D. volitans given in FishBase (Froese and Pauly, 2013) showed a single record in the Bay of Biscay and a single record point in the Southern North Sea, although the latter seems to be... |
