The stages of fishes that are discussed in this conference are those that are collected by hauling plankton nets in the oceans. These are the eggs, larvae and less frequently the juveniles of marine fishes. There are three principal reasons why ichthyoplankton surveys are made. Firstly, the surveys are often directed toward a single target species in order to use the distribution and abundance of the pelagic eggs to obtain an estimate of the biomass of the adult spawning population. Secondly, the larvae of a target species are studied in order to estimate the success of the year brood resulting from its spawn and hopefully to understand the factors underlying fluctuations in survival. The third reason is to use ichthyoplankton surveys to evaluate fish... |

Commercial catches of the crabe girafe, Ranina ranina in the Seychelles are analyses. Male crabs are dominant in the catch (65_310= male to 35_310= female) Large individuals present in the catch (exceeding 115mm) are all males. The size at first maturity for female crabs is 89.5mm. One spawning season is observed annually, around December Von Bertalanffy growth estimates obtained from length frequency data using the Hasselblad method to separate the modes followed by modal progressions, are as follows: Males: L oo = 160mm, k = 0.24 per year: Females: L oo = 137mm, k = 0.12 per year. Alternative estimates are also given using the Von, Bertalanffy equation assuming seasonally oscillating growth. The total mortality which corresponds to the natural mortality... |

A bibliographical review of the taxonomy and biology of the two most important loliginid species, Loligo sanpaulensis and Loligo gahi, of the Argentine Sea is presented. The external morphology and the anatomy of the reproductor system for both sexes are described, as well as the larval period, nutrition, age and growth for both species. The geographical distribution and the relative abundance in relation to the size structure and maturity stage are analized. Abundance estimations of L.gahi, in the Southpatagonian shelf, were obtained from two research cruises data. Catch data for the two species is also presented. |

Spiny lobster fishing in the Seychelles is an artisanal done essentially by skin divers operating at night in the shallow waters surrounding by the islands. Because of human population distribution lobster fishing grounds are concentrated on the inner granitic islands. In September 1992, a random stratified samoling program was set up to gather biological information from the entire granitic Mahe plateau. Direct census of fishery resources by Scuba divers swimming underwater transects was selected as the most feasible and expedient means by which to enact the Resource Survey. This report present partial result gathered for the survey around Mahe Island only and provides an estimate of the Maximum sustainable yield for the granitic plateau by extrapolation... |

The purple clam, Amiantis purpurata, inhabits the warm-temperate waters of the southwestern Atlantic, from Espírito Santo (Brazil) to the San Matías Gulf (Argentina). There are no previous studies dealing with its biology and populations dynamics. Astock located in Playa Villarino (San Antonio Este, San Matías Gulf) supports the only artisanal fishery targeting this species. Some peculiar aspects of its dynamics revealed by this study have significant implications for management: 1. It constitutes the southernmost population of this species, and appears to be isolated from other populations located to the north 2. Individuals are slow-growing 3. It seems to be composed of just one or a few annual classes, which are older than 10 years . 4. The spatial... |

The present work was carried out on ten mature Tilapia (Tilapia spilurus) and ten mature Bream fish (Mylio cuvieri) and the specimens were processed for histological studies. The oesophagus of Bream fish is characterized by the presence of numerous mucous cells which react positively to P.A.S. and alcian blue. While oesophagus of Tilapia is completely filled with mucous cells that react positively to P.A.S. only. The stomach of Bream consists of one part while that of Tilapia consists of two parts (cardiac and pyloric). The mucosa of stomach of both types of fish reacted positively to P.A.S. the pyloric caeci of Bream fish showed numerous mucous cells that react positively to Alsain blue. The small intestine of bream has thicker tunica muscularis than that... |
