What You Know is Who You Know? Communication Patterns Among Resource Users as a Prerequisite for Co-management Ecology and Society
Crona, Beatrice; Dept. of Systems Ecology, Stockholm University; beatrice@system.ecology.su.se.
The social networks is one factor determining the flow of information within communities and as such may be important in determining successful implementation of community based management. We mapped the social network used for communication of knowledge and information related to natural resource extraction among villagers in a coastal seascape in Kenya. We further identified subgroups and examined their interrelations while measuring to what extent personal attributes such as occupation can explain observed group structure. Finally, we compared the local ecological knowledge held by villagers of different occupations with the structure of the communication network to map how well this structure can explain distribution of ecological knowledge among them....

Leblond, Emilie; Merrien, Claude; Berthou, Patrick; Demaneche, Sébastien; Rostiaux, Emilie.
This document is created within the framework of IFREMER's programme, "Information system, economy and diagnostics of the exploitation and evolution of resources". This programme brings together projects that have ambitions specific to each. The "Halieutic Information System" (SIH) has as its goal to build the observation network of halieutic resources and associated uses. It is mainly in charge of developing indicators about fishing fleets and their output in the form of summaries to the various actors in the fishing industry (from research to professionals and managers) and the public. This type of output is created thanks to the implementation of a standard methodology of monitoring the activities of ships, and to the existence since 2001 of a network...

Study of the manoeuvrability and security of a trawl gear ArchiMer
Marichal, Dominique; Vincent, Benoit.
A complete method is presented for determining the static and dynamic behaviour of a fishing gear. The net, which is very flexible, is modelised by a set of rigid bars. The hydrodynamic forces, applied to each bar, are determined by combining and generalizing the Landweber and Morison hypothesis. A CFD method is used to calculate the forces on trawl doors. The fundamental principle of dynamics is completed with length equations expressing the elasticity of the bars. It leads to a set of second order non-linear differential equations, which is solved using a Runge-Kutta method. We will now present a few examples of the various applications of our works : the study of the trawl gear equilibrium in a uniform flow, an example of manoeuvrability (gyration of...

Optimisation of trawl energy efficiency under fishing effort constraint ArchiMer
Priour, Daniel; Khaled, Ramez.
Trawls energy efficiency is greatly affected by the drag, as well as by the swept area. The drag results in an increase of the energy consumption and the sweeping influences the catch. Methods of optimisation of the trawl design have been developed in order to reduce the volume of carburant per kg of caught fish and consequently the drag per swept area of the trawl. Based on a finite element method model for flexible netting structures, the tool modifies step by step a reference design. For each step the best-modified design, in terms of drag per swept area is kept. Such optimisation can lead to a decrease of the drag or an increase of the swept area. In the second case, that could lead to an increase of fishing effort. To avoid such increase, which could...

Time-Resolved PIV investigations of the flow field around cod-end net structures ArchiMer
Bouhoubeiny, Elkhadim; Germain, Gregory; Druault, Philippe.
Flow field measurements past a fixed rigid cod-end structure and past a porous fishing net structure are conducted using Time-Resolved PIV method. The rigid cod-end is first used to characterize finely the wake flow. Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) is then applied in order to extract the large scale energetic vortices of the flow from the measured velocity field. It is then observed that the first POD modes are associated to the Karman's type flow structure of vortex shedding. It is shown that the characteristics of the wake flow behind the rigid cod-end flow configuration compare quite well with previous ones obtained from bluff cylinder or sphere wake analyzes. Second, PIV measurements are performed around a non-rigid bottom trawl which is free to...

Impact of the sampling protocol in assessing ecological trends in an estuarine ecosystem: The empirical example of the Gironde estuary ArchiMer
Pasquaud, Stephanie; Brind'Amour, Anik; Berthele, Olivier; Girardin, Michel; Elie, Pierre; Boet, Philippe; Lepage, Mario.
In view of the European Union (EU) requirements to diagnose and monitor the ecological status of estuarine ecosystems using fish-based indicators, we assessed the effect of the sampling protocol in meeting these objectives. Using three different sampling surveys, we evaluated the impact of four components, i.e. sampling gear, spatial extent, length of time series and temporal window analysed, on the detection of ecological trends in the Gironde estuary, estimated by different types of fish-based indicator. For each component, temporal trends of several fish-based indicators were analysed and for the final diagnosis these temporal trends were combined. The results showed that sampling gear had significant effects on the assessment of ecological trends, as...

Flament, Margaux; Monet, Nans; Pau, Cedric; Reynal, Lionel.
In the West Indies, artisanal vessels target pelagic fish off the coast using several fishing gears in the same trip, which complicates their codification based on ICCAT references. This paper describes the fishing techniques used in Martinique in exploiting offshore pelagic species. A distinction is made between two métiers, fishing for large pelagic species on free schools or around driftwood and fishing close to anchored fish aggregating devices. These two métiers can be used in the same trip. Fishers can also suspend their use to catch small offshore pelagic species such as flying fish. Each gear enables a species group to be targeted. However, data collection carried out at landing sites does not allow assignment of catches to each of the gears used...

Sacchi, Jacques; Lespagnol, Patrick.

ArchiMer
Gobert, Bertrand.
The foreign artisanal fishery of Pointe-Noire (Congo) significantly evolved since its beginning, in the 1950s, by the number of fishermen and canoes, as well as the fishing techniques used and by its socio-economic organization. The fishery for Sardinella by surface gill-nets, its main activity, is based on common ownership and savings, thus allowing partial reinvestment of fishing revenues, the riskier (such as bottom gill-net) being left to individual initiatives. The foreign fishery employs many Congolese fishermen, in a permanent or very occasional way. However no improvement effect seems to have taken place in favor of the local artisanal fishery.

Meillat, Marc.
IFREMER's "Fishing Technology" team participated in the JUVESU99 campaign from 1 to 13 September. The equipment tested was the same as that from the SURFET99 campaign, a pelagic trawl with a surface area of 47.75 x 43.75 with netting of 500 metres of cables, 120-metre arms of equal length above and below, and a ballast of 40 kg to each wing tip The pelagic panels used were panels from the company TYBORON of "type 8" lent through the intermediary of the Kéroman company, Dock et Entrepôts Maritimes. The trawl's collection of balls consisted of a cluster of ten 11-litre balls on each upper wing tip, and a cluster of five 11-litre balls on each side of the square. The total collection of balls was therefore thirty 11-litre balls along the back rope of the...
