Depurando la Terminologia Anatomica: Apertura y Foramen, Dos Similitudes y Redundancia Terminológica International Journal of Morphology
Duque Parra,Jorge Eduardo; Barco Rios,John; Duque Quintero,Natalia.

The Morphometric Analysis of the Important Bone Structures on Skull Base in Living Individuals with Multidetector Computed Tomography International Journal of Morphology
Gökce,Cihan; Cicekcibasi,Aynur Emine; Yilmaz,Mehmet Tugrul; Kiresi,Demet.
In this study, it was aimed to determine the reliable morphometric data of the important bone structures on skull base using MDCT and to establish the differences of these data according to sex and lateralization. This study was retrospectively carried out on MDCT images in the Radiology Department of Meram Medical Faculty, Necmettin Erbakan University. We evaluated the images of the 100 (male 50 female 50) adult subjects without cranial trauma, surgery, and any deformity of the bone. The height and anteroposterior diameter of the hypophysial fossa (HFheight, HFanteroposterior), the length of the occipital condylus, anterior and posterior intercondylar distances (OCn, AID, PID); sagittal diameter, transverse diameter and area of the foramen magnum...

Anatomic Variants of Foramen Ovale and Spinosum in Human Skulls International Journal of Morphology
Khan,Aaijaz Ahmed; Asari,Mohd Asnizam; Hassan,Asma.
Foramen ovale and spinosum are important foramina of the greater wing of the sphenoid. Normal variations in their shapes and sizes are quite common and widely studied. In the present study, conducted in the Department of Anatomy of School of Medical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia, 25 dried human skulls were examined for anatomic variations of the foramina of the greater wing of the sphenoid. During the study, we noticed anatomic variations of the foramen ovale and spinosum. In one skull, there was an abnormally large and irregular foramen ovale which was confluent with the foramen spinosum. In the second skull, the foramen spinosum was absent on the left side and in the 3rd skull it was duplicated on the right side. These variations are very rare and...

Study of Abnormal Foramen Over the Posterior Arch of Atlas Vertebra International Journal of Morphology
Shinde,Vijaykumar Shankar; Mallikarjun,M.
The aim of this research was to study the anatomical aspects of abnormal foramen over the posterior arch of atlas vertebra. Posterior arch of atlas vertebrae was studied for abnormal foramen in sixty-seven adult human atlas vertebrae and findings were noted. In 2.98% of cases, unilateral complete abnormal foramen on the posterior arch of atlas vertebra was found. Clinicians should be aware about this variation on posterior arch of atlas, which may produce headache, vertigo, vertebrobasilar insufficiency and shoulder pains.

Incidence of Retromolar Foramen in Human Mandibles: Ethnic and Clinical Aspects International Journal of Morphology
Rossi,Ana Cláudia; Freire,Alexandre Rodrigues; Prado,Guilherme Bevilacqua; Prado,Felippe Bevilacqua; Botacin,Paulo Roberto; Caria,Paulo Henrique Ferreira.
The retromolar foramen allows the passage of the neurovascular bundles that contribute to nutrition and innervation of the pulp and periodontium of the lower teeth. Knowledge of this anatomical variation may prevent complications in the anesthesia and surgical procedures in this area and serve as an anatomical landmark for ethnic identification. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of the retromolar foramen in human mandibles of adult Brazilians and discuss the clinical and ethnic related to the presence of this foramen. Were evaluated 222 human mandibles, dry, adults, Brazilians, independent of gender. The evaluation was performed by two examiners who standardized search from a previous anatomical study. The mandibles were analyzed: the...

Caroticoclinoid Foramen in Human Skulls: Incidence, Morphometry and its Clinical Implications International Journal of Morphology
Rodrigues Freire,Alexandre; Rossi,Ana Cláudia; Bevilacqua Prado,Felippe; Groppo,Francisco Carlos; Ferreira Caria,Paulo Henrique; Botacin,Paulo Roberto.
The caroticoclinoid foramen is an inconstant structure, formed by the union of the anterior and middle clinoid processes. The aim of this study was to perform an incidence and morphometry of the caroticoclinoid foramen in Brazilian human skulls and discuss its clinical implications. Eighty dry human skulls with sex distinction were used, and 3 groups of incidence were determined: General, sex, and sides. The morphometry was performed using a manual caliper and the major diameter of the foramina was measured; the values were also divided in general, according to sex and sides. The incidence of skulls with at least one foramen was 8.5%. According to the sides, 8.5% of the skulls showed foramen on the right side and 2.5% on the left. We found 2.5% of the...

The Incidence of the Foramen Thyroideum in the South African Population International Journal of Morphology
Ramsaroop,L; Hurrinarain,K; Partab,P; Satyapal,K. S.
The foramen thyroideum is described as an occasional opening existing in one or both laminae of the thyroid cartilage which may or may not contain a neurovascular component. Foramen thryoideum was first described in the literature by Segond in 1847. Some authors consider its existence a structural variation rather than an anomaly, with classical texts of anatomy providing little detail when describing this foramen. This study was undertaken to investigate the incidence and characteristics of the foramen thyroideum in the South African population. A total of 80 formalin fixed cadaveric laryngeal specimens (obtained from the Department of Clinical Anatomy, University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa) were dissected. Larynges were dissected with the aid of a...
