Gastrointestinal Parasites in Free-Range Chicken Raised under Extensive System from the Northeast of Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Saraiva,DJ; Campina,ACC; Gonçalves,FCS; Melo-Viegas,D; Santos,ACG; Nogueira,RMS; Costa,AP.
ABSTRACT Brazilian poultry production is growing, mainly due to the cost and benefit that chicken meat provides. The importance of free-range chickens and the susceptibility, to which they are exposed, makes it necessary to know about gastrointestinal parasites and the consequences that large infections can cause for them as such as weight loss. The present study aimed to determine the occurrence of gastrointestinal parasites in free-range hens raised in an extensive regime in the municipality of Santa Rita, state of Maranhão, Brazil. The studied population was composed of adult chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) acquired from slaughterhouses in the region. The gastrointestinal organs of each chicken were separated and subsequently conditioned in flasks...

Histomorphological changes by epididymal lithiasis in roosters Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Geraldo,I; Mahecha,GAB; Martins,NRS.
Epididymal lithiasis (EL) histopathology is described using light and electronic microscopy in roosters (Gallus gallus domesticus) naturally affected by EL in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The histologic and morphological changes by EL in roosters was performed regarding cellular and subcellular details through light and electron microscopy. Efferent ductules epithelium lysosomal increase in size and numbers, membrane rupture, cellular vacuolation, ciliary loss, basal membrane degeneration, inflammatory reaction with mononuclear infiltrations, edema, epithelial and vascular endothelium losses were described. All industrial and freerange chickens showed EL in varying degrees in the efferent ductules (ED). However, ED altered areas did not correlate with the...

Serological Diagnosis of Influenza A Subtype H1 on Family Poultry of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais and Santa Maria, Rio Grande Do Sul, in Brazil. Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Castro Filho,RPL; Torres,ACD; Marin,SY; Diniz,SA; Matos,JCC; Mureb,EN; Resende,M; Martins,NRS.
ABSTRACT Serum samples (n=687) from Gallus gallus domesticus were collected for the investigation of antibodies to avian influenza virus (AIV-A) in the family poultry of the surrounding counties of Santa Maria/RS and the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte/MG, totaling twenty different counties. Additional samples of seventeen (n=17) free-flying ducks (C. moschata pure or hybrid with Anas platyrhynchos) were collected in Belo Horizonte. The chosen tests for the survey were performed as described by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), including agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) for antibodies to AIV-A nucleoprotein (N) and haemagglutination- inhibition (HI) for antibodies to subtype H1. Out of the 704 serum tests performed by AGID, eight (8/704)...

An Overview on Marek’s Disease Virus Evolution and Evidence for Increased Virulence in Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Torres,ACD; Marin,SY; Costa,CS; Martins,NRS.
ABSTRACT Marek’s disease virus (MDV) has been shown to be evolving to higher virulence. One of the genetic sites involved in virulence which enables such characterization is the 339-amino acid Meq protein encoding gene (meq). The reemergence of clinical Marek’s disease (MD) in vaccinated flocks can be associated to changes in meq. Our studies have shown the presence of very virulent MDV strains in the Brazilian industrial and free-range poultry. We present an overview of MD increasing severity and indicate the necessity of using phylogenetic tools for best accompanying MDV evolution.

Epididymal lithiasis in Gallus gallus domesticus Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Rocha Jr.,JM; Mahecha,GAB; Dornas,RAP; Kuana,SL; Martins,NRS.
A study on the occurrence of epididymal lithiasis (EL) in Gallus gallus domesticus of different breeds and from different geographical regions of Brazil was carried out. Forty breeding roosters were collected in the states Santa Catarina, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo and Goiás, representing two specific pathogen free Leghorn lines (SPF), one commercial Leghorn layer breeder (Hy-Line) line, two commercial broiler breeder lines (Ross and Cobb), and two backyard chicken flocks. In commercial poultry breeders, EL was observed mainly after 55 weeks of age, and lithus resulted in lower fertility caused by inadequate maturation of spermatozoa and testicular atrophy, which evolved to more severe testicular dysfunction at 100 weeks of age. One hundred...

Macroscopic embryonic development of Guinea fowl compared to other domestic bird species R. Bras. Zootec.
Araújo,Itallo Conrado Sousa de; Lucas,Luana Rudrigues; Machado,Juliana Pinto; Mesquita,Mariana Alves.
ABSTRACT Since few studies have addressed the embryonic development of Guinea fowl (Numida meleagris), the objective of the present study was to evaluate its embryonic development in the Cerrado region of Brazil and compare the results to published descriptions of the embryonic development of other domestic bird species. The commercialized weight for Guinea fowl eggs used in the experiment was found to be 37.57 g, while egg fertility was 92%. Embryo growth rate (%) was higher on the sixth day of incubation relative to other days. The heart began beating on the third day of development, while eye pigmentation and upper and lower limb buds appeared on the sixth day. The yolk sac was incorporated on the 24th day followed by chick external pipping and hatching...

Laminosioptes cysticola in free-range chickens in Minas Gerais, Brazil Ciência Rural
Martins,Nelson Rodrigo da Silva; Resende,José Sérgio de; Marques,Marcus Vinícius Romero; Barrios,Priscilla Rochelle; Fernandes,André Almeida; Montresor,Lângia Colli; Cunha,Lucas Maciel.
The subcutaneous acarid parasite Laminosioptes cysticola, the fowl cyst mite, has been found for a number of years in free-range chickens of peri-urban and rural Minas Gerais, forming collagen cysts which may be subsequently calcified after the parasite's death. The role of free-range chickens as hosts and the possible risk of food-borne human allergy, as a result of its consumption in feed, are considered.
