De Verdal, Hugues; Rosario, Westly; Vandeputte, Marc; Muyalde, Nerafe; Morissens, Pierre; Baroiller, Jean-francois; Chevassus, Bernard.
The development of a saline tolerant tilapia strain able to grow fast is of importance in the Philippines, where 240 000 ha of brackish water ponds are available. To this end, founder hybridization between Oreochromis niloticus (with favorable growth traits) and O. mossambicus (with favorable salinity tolerance traits) was performed and followed by backcrossing with O. mossambicus to develop a strain highly tolerant to saline environments. Genetic selection for growth performance was subsequently conducted. The aim of the present study was to estimate growth performance and survival of the hybrid in two rearing environments following four generations of genetic selection. A comparison between the hybrid and an internal reference line was performed in two...

Seleção precoce para incremento simultâneo do crescimento e da qualidade da madeira em Pinus taeda L. PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Paludzyszyn Filho, Estefano; Shimoyama, Vanilda R. S.; Mora, Admir Lopes.
The objective of this work was to study the efficiency of the early selection of parents and progeny for simultaneous increment of the growth and wood quality. For this, 48 open-pollinated families of Pinus taeda were grown at close spacing (0,5m x 0,5m). At the age of 16 months they were assessed for stem diameter at 30 cm above the ground and for wood basic density. The data were compared to diameter at breast height and basic density of commercial stem of the same progenies at 84 months under field conditions. Phenotypic and genetic parameters were estimated using an individual tree model. The narrow sense heritabilities in the 16º and 84º month for diameter (h2 = 0,24 e 0,22) and density (h2 = 0,27 e 0,19) suggest that they are inherited. The aditive...

Fifty years of wheat breeding in Southern Brazil: yield improvement and associated changes PAB
Rodrigues,Osmar; Lhamby,Julio César Barreneche; Didonet,Agostinho Dirceu; Marchese,José Abramo.
The objective of this study was to assess the impact of genetic breeding on grain yield, and to identify the physiological traits associated to the increment in yield and their related growth processes, for wheat cultivars grown in Southern Brazil, in the past five decades. Seven wheat cultivars released between 1940 and 1992, were compared for physiological aspects associated with grain yield. Grain yield, biological yield, biomass partitioning, harvest index and grain yield components were also determined. The number of grains per square meter was more affected by plant breeding and was better correlated with grain yield (r = 0.94, p<0.01) than with grain weight (r = -0.39ns). The higher number of grains per square meter was better correlated with the...

Genetic gain for body weight, feed conversion and carcass traits in selected broiler strains Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Schmidt,GS; Figueiredo,EAP; Ledur,MC.
The Brazilian Swine and Poultry Research Center (Embrapa Suínos e Aves) maintains a chicken breeding program for meat production since 1985. Two control lines (LLc and PPc) are maintained, whereas two male lines (TT and ZZ) and three female lines (PP, VV and KK) have been selected. This paper reports the genetic gain after 15 generations of combined selection (mass and independent culling levels) in order to develop the commercial broiler stocks Embrapa 021 and Embrapa 022. Selection pressure has been exerted on weight gain, carcass traits and fertility. In addition, female lines have also been selected for egg production, whereas males have been selected for feed efficiency since 1992. All lines have been selected for breast area instead of carcass traits...

Intrapopulation recurrent selection by mixed models in papaya of the formosa group Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Moreira,Sarah Ola; Kuhlcamp,Karin Tesch; Barros,Fabíola Lacerda de Souza; Zucoloto,Moises; Moitinho,Alyce Carla Rodrigues.
Abstract Few cultivars of papaya from the Formosa group are available to producers, and the development of new genotypes is indispensable. Thus, the use of effective selection strategies to obtain more productive cultivars and better quality fruits is also necessary. The aim of this study was to select of half-sib families (HSF) of papaya using the methodology of mixed models. Nineteen HSFs from the Incaper’s papaya breeding program were evaluated in a randomized block design with five replicates and nine plants per plot. The selection was made based on fruit mass (FM), pulp thickness (PT), soluble solids content in pulp (SS) and number of fruits (NF). The genetic parameters and genotypic values were estimated by the REML/BLUP procedure. The selected HSFs...

Value of genomics in breeding objectives for beef cattle R. Bras. Zootec.
MacNeil,Michael D..
ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to discern the contribution of genomic information to multiple-trait breeding objectives and thus understand the economic value of that information. True genetic values were simulated for each of n, possibly correlated, traits. These true genetic values, combined with uncorrelated random noise, resulted in both genomic and phenotypic estimated breeding values, EBVg and EBVp, respectively. The separate EBV were then merged (blended) as a function of their respective accuracies to produce a unified EBV for each of the n traits. Finally, for each simulated animal (N = 10000), the sum of products of economic weights and EBV was calculated to predict the economic value (net merit) of the individual. Accuracies of the...
