Rethinking Partnerships with the Aim of Producing Knowledge with Practical Relevance: a Case Study in the Field of Ecological Restoration Ecology and Society
Researchers in conservation biology and restoration ecology often work in partnership with local actors to increase the practical relevance of the knowledge they produce. Although an academic mode of knowledge production is essential in research for a better understanding of biological systems, it often fails to produce frameworks and methodologies having practical relevance that can be used in conservation and restoration programs. The involvement of researchers in collective plans of action is supposed to contribute to the production of a more contextualized form of knowledge. In this paper, we report our experience of partnership research in an ecological restoration project. We show that changing our mode of knowledge production to one that produces...

Uniparental genetic systems: a male and a female perspective in the domestic cattle origin and evolution Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Di Lorenzo,Piera; Lancioni,Hovirag; Ceccobelli,Simone; Curcio,Ludovica; Panella,Francesco; Lasagna,Emiliano.
Over the last 20 years, the two uniparentally inherited marker systems, namely mitochondrial DNA and Y chromosome have been widely employed to solve questions about origin and prehistorical range expansions, demographic processes, both in humans and domestic animals. The mtDNA and the Y chromosome, with their unique patterns of inheritance, continue to be extremely important source of information. These markers played significant roles in farm animals in the evaluation of the genetic variation within- and among-breed strains and lines and have widely applied in the fields of linkage mapping, paternity tests, prediction of breeding values in genome-assisted selection, analysis of genetic diversity within breeds detection of population admixture, assessment...

Minimum number and best combinations of harvests to evaluate accessions of tomato plants from germplasm banks Genet. Mol. Biol.
Abreu,Flávia Barbosa; Silva,Derly José Henriques da; Marim,Bruno Garcia; Carneiro,Pedro Crescêncio Souza; Juhasz,Ana Cristina Pinto; De Luca,Carina A.C.; Valente,Reginaldo Fialho; Guimarães,Marcelo Almeida.
This study presents the minimum number and the best combination of tomato harvests needed to compare tomato accessions from germplasm banks. Number and weight of fruit in tomato plants are important as auxiliary traits in the evaluation of germplasm banks and should be studied simultaneously with other desirable characteristics such as pest and disease resistance, improved flavor and early production. Brazilian tomato breeding programs should consider not only the number of fruit but also fruit size because Brazilian consumers value fruit that are homogeneous, large and heavy. Our experiment was a randomized block design with three replicates of 32 tomato accessions from the Vegetable Germplasm Bank (Banco de Germoplasma de Hortaliças) at the Federal...

Genetic diversity in a world germplasm collection of tall fescue Genet. Mol. Biol.
Cuyeu,Romina; Rosso,Beatriz; Pagano,Elba; Soto,Gabriela; Fox,Romina; Ayub,Nicolás Daniel.
Festuca arundinacea Schreb., commonly known as tall fescue, is a major forage crop in temperate regions. Recently, a molecular analysis of different accessions of a world germplasm collection of tall fescue has demonstrated that it contains different species from the genus Festuca and allowed their rapid classification into the three major morphotypes (Continental, Mediterranean and Rhizomatous). In this study, we explored the genetic diversity of 161 accessions of Festuca species from 29 countries, including 28 accessions of INTA (Argentina), by analyzing 15 polymorphic SSR markers by capillary electrophoresis. These molecular markers allowed us to detect a total of 214 alleles. The number of alleles per locus varied between 5 and 24, and the values of...

Yamanaka,Naoki; Sato,Hiroyuki; Yang,Zhenyu; Xu,Dong He; Catelli,Lizandra Lucy; Binneck,Eliseu; Arias,Carlos Alberto Arrabal; Abdelnoor,Ricardo Vilela; Nepomuceno,Alexandre Lima.
An understanding of the relationship of geographically different soybean gene pools, based on selectively neutral DNA markers would be useful for the selection of divergent parental cultivars for use in breeding. We assessed the relationships of 194 Chinese, 59 Japanese, and 19 Brazilian soybean cultivars (n = 272) using 12 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. Quantification Theory III and clustering analyses showed that the Chinese and Japanese cultivars were genetically quite distant to each other but not independent, while Brazilian cultivars were distantly related to the cultivars from the other two countries and formed a cluster that was distant from the other two gene pool clusters. Our results indicated that the Brazilian soybean gene pool is...

Biometric variability of goat populations revealed by means of principal component analysis Genet. Mol. Biol.
Pires,Luanna Chácara; Machado,Théa M. Medeiros; Araújo,Adriana Mello; Olson,Timothy A.; Silva,João Batista Lopes da; Torres,Robledo Almeida; Costa,Márcio da Silva.
The aim was to analyze variation in 12 Brazilian and Moroccan goat populations, and, through principal component analysis (PCA), check the importance of body measures and their indices as a means of distinguishing among individuals and populations. The biometric measurements were wither height (WH), brisket height (BH) and ear length (EL). Thorax depth (WH-BH) and the three indices, TD/WH, EL/TD and EL/WH, were also calculated. Of the seven components extracted, the first three principal components were sufficient to explain 99.5% of the total variance of the data. Graphical dispersion by genetic groups revealed that European dairy breeds clustered together. The Moroccan breeds were separated into two groups, one comprising the Drâa and the other the...

Determination of genetic variability of traditional varieties of Brazilian rice using microsatellite markers Genet. Mol. Biol.
Brondani,Claudio; Borba,Tereza Cristina Oliveira; Rangel,Paulo Hideo Nakano; Brondani,Rosana Pereira Vianello.
The rice (Oryza sativa) breeding program of the Rice and Bean research center of the Brazilian agricultural company Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária (Embrapa) is well established and provides new cultivars every year to attend the demand for improved high yielding varieties with tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. However, the elite genitors used to compose new populations for selection are closely related, contributing to the yield plateau reached in the last 20 years. To overcome this limit, it is necessary to broaden the genetic basis of the cultivars using diverse germplasm such as wild relatives or traditional varieties, with the latter being more practical because they are more easily crossed with elite germplasm to accelerate the...

Montenegro,M; Llambí,S; Castro,G; Barlocco,N; Vadell,A; Landi,V; Delgado,JV; Martínez,A.
In this study, we genetically characterized the Uruguayan pig breed Pampa Rocha. Genetic variability was assessed by analyzing a panel of 25 microsatellite markers from a sample of 39 individuals. Pampa Rocha pigs showed high genetic variability with observed and expected heterozygosities of 0.583 and 0.603, respectively. The mean number of alleles was 5.72. Twenty-four markers were polymorphic, with 95.8% of them in Hardy Weinberg equilibrium. The level of endogamy was low (FIS = 0.0475). A factorial analysis of correspondence was used to assess the genetic differences between Pampa Rocha and other pig breeds; genetic distances were calculated, and a tree was designed to reflect the distance matrix. Individuals were also allocated into clusters. This...
