Optimizing the metabolic use of these carbohydrate-rich plant products in fish feeds could be achieved through nutritional programming strategies of fish larvae. The present study aims at testing the long-term effect of an early-life high-carbohydrate nutritional (34% of starch in the feed) stimulus in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), by examining several biochemical and molecular parameters involved in carbohydrate metabolism in sea bass larvae and juveniles, compared to a control group fed standard larval regime (phase 1). As awaited, specific activities of digestive enzymes, from pancreatic and intestinal segments, involved in glucide digestion (amylase, sucrase) were enhanced together with an up-regulation of glucokinase gene and... |

The aim of this work was to investigate the catabolic process of three kinds of dietary carbohydrates in the gut of sea bass juveniles, with the possible contribution of the intestinal microbiota to the nutrition of the host, and the subsequent effects on intermediary metabolism. A first diet contained waxy maize (99% amylopectin), a highly digestible form of starch. A second diet was less quickly digestible due to its high amylose content of resistant starch. Two other diets contained fibre instead of starch, either only cellulose as control, or also other non-starch polysaccharides brought by lupin meal. The effect of the diets on the host confirmed previous results, with the stimulation of glucose storage in the liver in sea bass fed the starchy diets,... |

n-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LC-PUFA), mainly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5 n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6 n-3), are present in mammal tissues both from endogenous synthesis from desaturation and elongation of 18:3 n-3 and/or from dietary origin (marine products and fish oils). In rodents in vivo, n-3 LC-PUFA have a protective effect against high fat diet induced insulin resistance. Such an effect is explained at the molecular level by the prevention of many alterations of insulin signaling induced by a high fat diet. Indeed, the protective effect of n-3 LC-PUFA results from the following: (a) the prevention of the decrease of phosphatidyl inositol 3' kinase (PI3 kinase) activity and of the depletion of the glucose... |

Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) are known to use dietary carbohydrates poorly. One of the hypotheses to explain the poor utilisation of dietary glucose by these fish is a dysfunction in nutritional regulation of hepatic glucose metabolism. In this study, we obtained partial clones of rainbow trout cDNAs coding for a glucose transporter (Glut2), and for the enzymes 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase (6PF-2K/F-2,6BPase), fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase (FBPase) and pyruvate kinase (PI(), Their deduced amino acid sequences were highly similar to those of mammals (up to 80% similarity), In a study of nutritional regulation, the Glut2 gene was highly expressed in the liver irrespective of the nutritional status of the trout, in agreement with... |

In peripartum dairy cows, insulin resistance (IR) increases to adjust the direction of energy to lactation after calving. To investigate the effect of prepartum IR on postpartum reproductive performance, the insulin tolerance test (ITT) was applied to 15 cows at 3 weeks (Pre21) and 10 days (Pre10) before the predicted calving date. Blood glucose area under the curve (AUCglu) within 120 min after administration of 0.05 IU/kg-BW insulin was calculated. The occurrence of first ovulation, days to first artificial insemination (AI) and first AI conception rate were recorded. Nutritional status postpartum was evaluated by blood chemical analysis. Based on AUCglu changes from Pre21 to Pre10, cows were classified into either the AUC-up group (AUCglu increase, n=5)... |

Basal ganglia have complex functional connections with the cerebral cortex and are involved in motor control, executive functions of the forebrain, such as the planning of movement, and cognitive behaviors based on their connections. The aim of this study was to provide detailed functional correlation patterns between the basal ganglia and cerebral cortex by conducting an interregional correlation analysis of the 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) data based on precise structural information. Fifteen participants were scanned with 7-Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and high resolution research tomography (HRRT)-PET fusion system using 18F-FDG. For detailed interregional correlation analysis, 24 subregions of the basal... |

The activity of important glycolytic enzymes (hexokinase, phosphofructokinase, aldolase, phosphohexoseisomerase, pyruvate kinase and lactate dehydrogenase) and glutaminolytic enzymes (phosphate-dependent glutaminase) was determined in the thymus and mesenteric lymph nodes of Wistar rats submitted to protein malnutrition (6% protein in the diet rather than 20%) from conception to 12 weeks after birth. The wet weight (g) of the thymus and mesenteric lymph nodes decreased due to protein malnutrition by 87% (from 0.30 ± 0.05 to 0.04 ± 0.01) and 75% (0.40 ± 0.04 to 0.10 ± 0.02), respectively. The protein content was reduced only in the thymus from 102.3 ± 4.4 (control rats) to 72.6 ± 6.6 (malnourished rats). The glycolytic enzymes were not affected by protein... |
