The American grapsid crab Sesarma rubripes, classified as Metasesarma rubripes by Rathbun (1918), was compared with M. rousseauxi, the type species of Metasesarma, and was found to be different in a number of characters. On the other hand, S. rubripes is very close to those species of American Sesarma that are considered to be members of the subgenus Chiromantes. The characters common to S. rubripes and the American Chiromantes can be interpreted as synapomorphies by means of an outgroup comparison. Aratus pisonii and the West African Sesarma elegans are further members of the group in question and both share special derived characters with S. rubripes. As a consequence, S. rubripes should be returned to the genus Sesarma. It is recommended, however, to... |

This study evaluated the influence of the water and air temperatures, pluviosity and photoperiod on the breeding season of Goniopsis cruentata (Latreille, 1803), in Ubatuba littoral, southeastern Brazilian coast. Monthly collections were conducted out from January/95 to December/96 in an estuarine area from 23º29'10"-23º29'45"S to 45º09'10"-45º10'00"W. Water and air temperature variation showed the highest correlation coefficient with the frequency of ovigerous females, r² = 0.73 and 0.68, respectively. However, an analysis of the set of environmental variables, revealed the photoperiod as the factor of highest association with the ovigerous frequency (r² = 0.68). This degree of association allow us to suggest that the breeding season duration of G.... |

The objective of this study was to get some knowledge about the reproductive aspects of Goniopsis cruentata (Latreille, 1803), concerning through sex ratio, morphological sexual maturity, reproductive period, fecundity and eggs size. The crabs were collected monthly in Itacuruçá's Mangroves from November, 1997 to November, 1998. Four hundred and seven crabs were caught and they were 47% males, 36% females and 17% ovigerous females. The sex ratio was 1:1.13 (male:female) (X²= 1.54, p > 0.05). The relation of abdomen width (AW) and carapace width (CW) in females showed a positive allometric grow (b = 1.36), it suggests the size onset of maturity occur from 26.0 a 29.0 mm (CW) in females. The ovigerous females occured during all the research period, except... |

Ovigerous females of Pachygrapsus transversus (Gibbes, 1850) were collected on the Praia Dura and Saco da Ribeira beaches, Ubatuba, São Paulo, Brazil. Larvae were individually reared in a climatic room at 25ºC temperature, salinities of 28, 32 and 35‰ and under natural photoperiod conditions. The best rearing results were observed at 35%o salinity. Seven zoeal instars were observed, drawing and described in detail. The data are compared with those obtained for P. gracilis (Saussure, 1858). |

The larval development of Cyrtograpsus angulatus Dana, 1851 was studied in laboratory through eggs hatched from ovigerous females collected in mole of Rio Grande, Rio Grande, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Three experiments (A, B, C) were carried out involving 250 larvae, derived from three ovigerous females. The experiments A and B, were carried in a climatically box with temperature among 22 and 25ºC, and salinity among 32 and 34. The experiment C in a room without controlled temperature, in a constant salinity of 30. The larvae were maintained individually and food consisted of rotifers Brachionus plicatillis Müller, 1786 and microscope algae Tetraselmis sp. The development of C. angulatus Dana, 1851 comprises five stages of zoea and one... |
