Groundwater markets and water use efficiency: The case of Karnataka AgEcon
Deepak, S.C.; Chandrakanth, Mysore G.; Nagaraj, N..
This study, based on primary data collected from 120 groundwater users in eastern dry zone of Karnataka compares the water use efficiency among different categories of water users, viz. well owners who do not sell water, well owners who sell water either for agricultural or non-agricultural use and water buyers (both agricultural and nonagricultural). Some of the important findings are- • The cropping pattern varies between categories, with both the sellers and buyers preferring low water intensive mulberry crop, while the self user's category grew more water intensive crops. • Farmers who sold water for non-agricultural purposes earned the highest return (because of higher end-use price) and also made the most efficient use of water. Thus, making a point...

Impact of groundwater markets in peninsular India on water use efficiency: A Data Envelopment Analysis approach AgEcon
Manjunatha, A.V.; Speelman, Stijn; Van Huylenbroeck, Guido; Chandrakanth, Mysore G..
In the hard rock areas of India, overdraft of groundwater has led to negative externalities, increases costs of groundwater irrigation and causes welfare losses. Groundwater markets are slowly emerging as niche markets to improve water distribution and to mitigate water scarcity by stimulating more efficient use. A sample containing water sellers, water buyers and control farmers was collected to test the hypothesis of more efficient water use. The effect of groundwater market introduction on the efficiency of water use is studied using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The calculated subvector efficiencies for water use show that water buyers use water most efficient. But also water sellers are more efficient in their water use than the control group....

Groundwater Entrepreneurs in China: Selling Water to Meet the Demand for Water AgEcon
Zhang, Lijuan; Wang, Jinxia; Huang, Jikun; Rozelle, Scott.
The overall goal of our paper is to better understand the development of groundwater markets in northern China. In particular, we focus on the factors that determine the development of groundwater markets in our attempt to explain their 'breadth' and 'depth.' Based on a survey of 24 randomly sampled villages and 50 randomly sampled tubewells in two provinces (Hebei and Henan Province) in 2001 and a field survey of 68 randomly sampled villages in 4 provinces (Hebei, Henan, Shanxi, and Shaanxi) of northern China in 2004, our results show that groundwater markets in northern China have emerged and are developing rapidly. Our results show that groundwater markets in northern China are informal and localized. The markets have developed in a way in which they...
