Indonesian sponges of the genus Petrosia Vosmaer (Demospongiae: Haplosclerida) Naturalis
Voogd, N.J. de; Soest, R.W.M. van.
Sponges of the genus Petrosia (Demospongiae: Haplosclerida) are large and characteristic components of many Indonesian reefs. We identify and provide descriptions of seven species of Petrosia collected recently on SW Sulawesi reefs (Eastern Indonesia), two of which are new to science: Petrosia (Petrosia) alfiani spec. nov. and Petrosia (Petrosia) hoeksemai spec. nov. Additional species recorded are Petrosia (Petrosia) lignosa Wilson, 1925, Petrosia (Petrosia) nigricans Lindgren, 1897, Petrosia (Petrosia) plana Wilson, 1925, Petrosia (Strongylophora) corticata (Wilson, 1925) and Petrosia (Strongylophora) strongylata Thiele, 1903. The species are discussed and compared with Petrosia records from other Indonesian and neighbouring Indo-West Pacific areas. We...

Shallow-water Haplosclerida (Porifera, Demospongiae) from Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil (southwestern Atlantic) Naturalis
Muricy, Guilherme; Ribeiro, Suzi M..
Six species of haplosclerid sponges are described from shallow waters in the coast of Rio de Janeiro state, southeastern Brazil (southwestern Atlantic). Three species: Amphimedon viridis Duchassaing & Michelotti, 1864, Callyspongia (Callyspongia) pallida Hechtel, 1965 and Oceanapia nodosa (George & Wilson, 1919) are already known from neighbouring biogeographic provinces (viz., the Caribbean) and the other three are new to science, viz., Callyspongia (Toxochalina) pseudotoxa sp. n., Arenosclera brasiliensis sp. n. (both provisional endemics from Rio de Janeiro state), and Haliclona melana sp. n. Ecological data, known pharmacological properties, and morphological variations along the geographic range of the species are discussed, and a key to the...

Haliclona (Halichoclona) vansoesti n. sp., a new chalinid sponge species (Porifera, Demospongiae, Haplosclerida) from the Caribbean Naturalis
Weerdt, Wallie H. de; Kluijver, Mario J. de; Gomez, Raquel.
A new sponge species, Haliclona (Halichoclona) vansoesti n.sp., belonging to the family Chalinidae of the order Haplosclerida, is described from Curaçao and other Caribbean localities. The subgenus name Halichoclona de Laubenfels is for the first time applied to a species of the “fistulosa” group ( “Pellina” of authors), one of eight species groups which came out as monophyletic groups during an earlier phylogenetic analysis of the genus Haliclona. Justification for devoting a separate paper to a single species follows from recent findings of interesting secondary metabolites produced by this sponge. Chemistry and cell biology research necessitates to have a proper name for the species available.

A monograph of the shallow-water Chalinidae (Porifera, Haplosclerida) of the Caribbean Naturalis
Weerdt, Wallie H. de.
All known species of the sponge family Chalinidae (Demospongiae, Haplosclerida) occurring in the shallower part of the Caribbean are described and taxonomically revised. The study is the result of collecting activities of the author and others throughout the Caribbean, and examination of type and other material in musea and institutes. In a previous revision of north-eastern Atlantic Chalinidae (De Weerdt, 1986, 1989), the family was subdivided into eight monophyletic species groups, with various states of the skeletal architecture as main synapomorphous (shared derived) characters. After examination of all available type species of the nominal genera of the family, the species groups are now given proper names, replacing the tentative names in the earlier...

Amphimedon denhartogi spec. nov. (Porifera: Haplosclerida) from deep reef habitats in Indonesia Naturalis
Voogd, N.J. de.
A new sponge species Amphimedon denhartogi spec. nov., belonging to the family Niphatidae of the order Haplosclerida, is described from 3 localities in Indonesia: Tulamben (NE Bali), Siladen Island (NE Sulawesi) and Kambing Island (SW Sulawesi). Amphimedon denhartogi spec. nov. is characterised by its growth form of thinly flabellate branches, the occurrence of star-shaped oscules over one side of the sponge body, and by its small strongyles, and can hardly be confused with another species. All specimens were found in similar habitats, at around 40-45 m of depth on steep sandy slopes.

Callyspongia (Euplacella) biru spec. nov. (Porifera: Demospongiae: Haplosclerida) from Indonesia Naturalis
Voogd, N.J. de.
A new sponge species Callyspongia (Euplacella) biru spec. nov. is described from various locations within Indonesia (NE Bali, SW & NE Sulawesi and NE Kalimantan). The species is assigned to the subgenus Euplacella of the genus Callyspongia because it has brushes of spicules on the nodes of its double-meshed ectosomal skeleton. The species is discussed and compared with relevant Callyspongia records from other Indonesian and neighbouring Indo-Pacific areas.

A new species oc Cladocroce Topsent, 1892 (Porifera, Haplosclerida) from the Gulf of Thailand Naturalis
Putchakarn, Sumaitt; Weerdt, Wallie H. de; Soncheang, Pichai; Soest, Rob W.M. van.
A new sponge species, Cladocroce burapha n. sp. (Chalinidae, Haplosclerida, Porifera), is described from Chonburi province, eastern coast of the Gulf of Thailand, Thailand. The new species can be separated from other Cladocroce species by a combination of characters, including growth form, form and size of the spicules, and habitat. This is the first record of the genus Cladocroce from Thailand.

Haliclona (Halichoclona) vanderlandi spec. nov. (Porifera: Demospongiae: Haplosclerida) from Indonesia Naturalis
Weerdt, W.H. de; Soest, R.W.M. van.
A new sponge species, Haliclona (Halichoclona) vanderlandi is described from three Indonesian localities: Take Bone Rata, Kapoposang (SW Sulawesi) and Manadotua Island (NE Sulawesi). The species belongs to the family Chalinidae and is assigned to the subgenus Halichoclona of the genus Haliclona, hitherto known as the “fistulosa” group as distinguished by de Weerdt (1989).
